It's frightening how similar our problems are.

When I get writer's block, people are like, "Write about writer's block!" and I'm like, "It doesn't work that way." I write fast, but I can't write a sentence without perfecting it. So all these thoughts and ideas keep slipping through my fingers, and it's so frustrating. It's the reason I've never finished a short story, much less a novella. Even poems. I feel for you.

Ok, I've never vented here before but now I really need to.

Today I was talking to a girl at my school and she said she skimmed through The Fault in Our Stars and it was boring. She went on to say it sucked. She also said The Vampire Diaries was way better.

I haven't read The Vampire Diaries so I'm not going to judge on that but to say The Fault in Our Stars sucked when you haven't even read it... Wow. John Green is an amazing writer and she said she doesn't like his writing based on what she's skimmed through.

Sorry, that just really bothered me and I needed to vent.

The Fault in Our Stars is amazing. Just tell her all about how it was the bestselling book at Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Perhaps she'll reconsider.

One of my friends LOVES that book! She even was trying to make me buy it when we were out at the weekend. I think she read it, what, 12 times??

Reviving this club/thread, because I need to vent.

Years ago, I posted (a few times) to this thread and said how annoying it was that people on this site often (though not always) seem obtuse when it comes to stylistic choices. And, lo and behold, that problem is still happening. >_> I hate, hate, hate it when people don't understand stylistic choices. Drives me up a wall. Stylized writing is awesome and shouldn’t be criticized just because it breaks the mold of tradition and does something out of the box.

Also. It kind of bothers me that people don’t seem to understand that prologues should NOT reveal everything about the story. In fact, prologues are supposed to be on the vaguer side. A prologue does not equal a first chapter, and telling the reader everything about your story and your characters in the prologue alone would be bad writing and just simply incorrect. So being told that you didn’t include enough about your characters and storyline and backstory or whatever when A.) it was a prologue, and B.) you did so intentionally because of prologue rules AND as a stylistic choice? IT MAKES ME CRAZY. Hence the rabid caps.

And lastly, I loathe it when people on here expect a historical story to follow contemporary society's rules. Like, yeah, that one thing that happens in that story probably wouldn't happen in the USA in the year 2017, but it definitely would happen in 1350s-era China--which is, you know, the actual setting for that story. COME ON, PEOPLE. Applying modern-day America’s rules to a whole other period and setting, and then critiquing the story for not following modern-day America’s rules when the setting of the story is very plainly stated, is quite simply stupid.

Rant about essay writers

Look, I understand the fact that when a person writes an essay and is not a seasoned reporter or anything, they are expressing their opinions for the most part. But that does not excuse anyone from the fact that their work is, so to speak, five thousand words of cotton wool full of signs of contempt and subtly pushing the reader the opinion that homophobia, racism and who knows what else is actually fine in principle because it is only the author's opinion. Good. I understand. You want to express your opinion. But don't do it in an offensive and unpleasant and so to speak hypocritical way - because once someone says that you always have to look at two sides of a coin and then writes an entire essay only about his opinions from life under a rock, it's hypocrisy. He called it research and it was all just his bullshit. Like. What the heck. And on top of that, in the final opinion, he labeled it as the opinion of a "person with ADHD" I ALSO HAVE ADHD AND YET I THINK THAT THE ESSAY WAS A PIECE OF SOMETHING WHICH I WON'T SAY BECAUSE I REFUSE TO SWEAR BC OF SOME WORK. But. Dude. Think. Twice.
