My top 3 games of 2013

3 posts in this topic.

  1. I usually only play the biggest games each year, and then I'll get whatever else I want next year, where I can get them cheap in bulks.

Making any year end top lists seems pointless then. However, my top 3 this year won't ever change. So I'll list these 3 amazing games and mention some others.

    3. GTA V - This game is fantastic, and massive! Rockstar has seriously outdone themselves. You can have so many hours of fun here.

    2. Beyond: Two Souls - This game is amazing. And sadly, it got a lot of sh!t when it came out. I'm not sure what the critics didn't get about this masterpiece of storytelling, but they were wrong. Save for the number one slot in this list, I've rarely been this engrossed in a story. It looks so beautiful, the graphics are the best in gaming so far and the motion capture acting of Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe is great. Towards the end of the game, it presented me with a choice I couldn't make, and I've actually replayed it three times to experience it all.

    3. The Last of Us - I am really glad this game exists. If not, I'd have a harder time with deciding on a Game of the Year. Though The last of Us is not my absolute favorite game, I can say that it is without a doubt the best game I have ever played.

    Some mentions:

The Stanley Parable - I think this game was tailormade for my type of humor. I love it.

Dead Space 3 - I love the Dead Space series. Though this game isn't as good as the two previous installments, it's still a solid game.

Towerfall - I love the Ouya. I mainly use it for retro games with emulators (finally beat Super Mario Bros 3!), but Towerfall is the best game the Ouya has to offer.

Call of Duty: Ghosts - I love the CoD series. I haven't picked this game up yet, as I'll get it on the PS4 when I get that. But once I do, I know it'll deliver.

Tomb Raider - This is one of those games I'll get in a bulk buy later. It looks great.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - I only played Assassin's Creed I and II, but I'm now playing through the 3rd one. Later down the line, I'll have to get this 4th one.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - One I'll pick up from the PSN later. It looks great.

Gone Home - I'll check this out soon.

Bioshock Infinite - 6 years after Bioshock was released to massive acclaim, I finally played it. I'll try to play through Bioshock II and then this one.

2013 was an awesome year for games!
  2. The dislike for Beyond: Two Souls, comes mostly from how it wasn't made as a game, but a movie. A lot of people hate the idea of games acting like wannabe movies. Which is honestly what that game is. It's a wannabe movie.

One with lots of button presses. You go from scene to scene with a short, tiny amount of control given a little taste of playing the game before another cutscene.

So in otherwords the story has to be amazing to account for that. If you want a company that does that right look for Tell Tale Games. Beyond: Two Souls is not a story worth such little control the story was not deep enough that it needed to take away your ability to actually play the game as much as it did.
  3. I disagree. The story told in Beyond: Two Souls is an enthralling journey which should have your interest from the get-go. At the very least, all the development given to these characters should make you care about them.

The game also gives you a whole bunch of freedom in how the story is going to play out. It's just designed to keep going, no matter what you do. Whether that is just giving up during all confrontations or not.

In the end, it's not a game for everyone. I for one am very happy that there are game companies out there that tries to create something new and creative.

And Telltale's track record for games, beyond TWD season one, isn't all too perfect. Season two was lacking, The Wolf Among Us felt disappointing, and most of what they made before TWD was pretty shabby. Back to the Future was pretty good.

There really hasn't been a game that is the defining gem in this genre yet. Both Telltale Games and Quantic Dream are both among the best at this point though.

Poetry is my cheap means of transportation. By the end of the poem the reader should be in a different place from where he started. I would like him to be slightly disoriented at the end, like I drove him outside of town at night and dropped him off in a cornfield.
