  1. “That’s very interesting. Is there any particular reason someone would want to invite spirits into their home?”
  2. "No. That one's more an instruction in what not to do."

"Not all spirits are bloodthirsty monsters, but the majority are, and the rest don't particularly like humans or their ilk. At least, not of late."
  3. “‘As of late?’” She echoed. “What do you mean by that? Did something happen?”
  4. "Legend claims there was once an alliance between humanity and an order of guardian spirits many hundreds of years ago."

"It's one of the less believable myths. In all my experience, spirits are either bloodthirsty monsters or mindless drifters."
  5. June tapped her chin, thinking. “How do you go about killing a spirit?”
  6. "There are only two things that can harm a spirit, one being a Hunters' Gift and the other any weapon made from aurin-metal. Aurin degrades quickly when taken too far from a Hunters' presence, so either way, Idria remains dependent on Hunters for defense."

He leans back in his chair, idly tapping a finger on the arm of his chair. "The process itself begins with information-gathering. We send a scout to locate the spirit and its haunts, identify its characteristics as far as possible without alerting it to our presence, and question witnesses or victims."

"The scout's written report is then given to the Council, and we await further orders. When summoned, the Head of House uses the gathered information to plan a strategy of containing the rogue spirit in order to destroy it with least risk to citizens' lives or property. We fight the spirit. Destroy it. Then send a member of our team to report details to a superior, and bring any wounded to headquarters for medical attention..."

He trails off to silence. "Broken down like that, it sounds more clerical than heroic."
  7. June laughed softly. “I suppose.” She paused, thinking. “Are Hunters ever stretched thin? And is there a place for ‘old-bloods’ to help in this process?”
