I could have sworn the director was Guillermo del Toro. So when did I lose track of the news?

It's not surprising that you lost track.
it was back and forth between del Toro and Jackson for a really long time because of lawsuits and the different production houses dragging their feet.
del Toro stepped down a last year i think because he said it was taking to long to get the Hobbit off the ground and he didn't feel the drive to do it any longer because of all the negative things that had been happening. I'm sad he stepped down, he was going to stay really closer to the real story.. or so he said. Jackson is a wonderful director but he changed some key things in LOTR which bugged me a little. of well. two of my favorite actors are in it so I'm happy. They play Bilbo and Smaug.
SO EXCITED!!!!!!! (I was never into harry potter and not having a movie to look forward to rabidly has left me a little sad. XD)
