For Rachel Dugle who first got me really interested in the regency period with talking about Fitzwilliam Darcy. You may have sparked the beginning of a historical period obcession
Chapter 1
Katherine Roberts had never really been interested in history until she happened to read Pride and Prejudice. After that she could not get enough of the regency period. She could almost always be spotted with a romance novel set in the period. She didn't date much, but when she did she usually found herself comparing the men to the characters from her books. One night in the summer after her senior year she was sitting at her friend's house, eating popcorn, and watching Pride and Prejudice when her friend spoke up.
“So should I even ask why you left this one?” Her friend Shannon asked as she sat down beside her.
“No you shouldn't.” Katherine said.
“Kat what am I to do with you? Let me guess. He wasn't enough like a regency man would be.” Shannon said. Katherine resisted the urge to laugh.
“You know me to well. He just wasn't the type of guy I could picture myself being with.” Katherine said in explanation.
“That is because the only type of man you can pictures yourself with is like Darcy there.” Shannon said motioning to the tv. “I swear you'd probably only commit to a man dressed like that. What is so great about regency men anyway?”
“Do you really want me to answer that?” Katherine asked.
“God no! You'd be ranting on half of the night.” Shannon teased. They both laughed then quited down to watch the rest of the movie. “Don't you find Darcy kind of doush bagish?” Shannon asked as the movie was ending.
“Maybe at the beginning, but he gets better as it goes along.” Katherine said.
“True, but he can be such a jerk. Like when he convinced Bingley to not marry Jane.” Shannon said. Katherine couldn't argue with that.
“That was kind of a jerk move.” Katherine admitted.
“Well she finally admits Darcy has a downside. I must finally be reaching her.” Shannon joked. They ended up laughing and chatting for a long time and the next week Katherine was off on vacation with her family to Ireland.
*****
William McGinty stepped out of his carriage and onto the grounds of his country home. He had declined several invitations to come stay in both Dublin and London that summer. He had spent the past spring enduring being practically chased after by woman wanting to marry their daughters off to him. He was tired of it all. Then he had his mother practically breathing down his neck telling him he needed to marry.
“William you are 24 years old. It's about time you marry and settle down.” She had told him enough times he could quote her exactly. However he always relied the same. That he was perfectly content beign a bachelor and would marry when he was ready. He heard his friend James getting gout of the carriage behind him and was brought back to reality.
“I don't think I will ever understand why you didn't want to come to town this season.” James said.
“You didn't have to come with me James. You could have been all caught up in the season.” William pointed out slightly amused.
“Not on your life. You're my oldest friend. It wouldn't be any fun without you there to torment.” James joked. William just laughed and walked inside glad to be home.
Chapter 2
When Katherine and her family arrived in the small town in Ireland where they would be staying for two weeks she was amazed. It was absolutely beautiful. Then she found out there was a festival starting the next day where people dressed up in regency costume. She was in heaven. She could hardly wait. She even convinced her parents to buy her a full regency era costume. When she woke up the next morning she dressed in her costume and went straight out to the festival. Her parents almost always slept later then her on vacation so she knew they wouldn't miss her for at least another few hours. She was amazed by the fact that everyone she saw was in costume. She went around to various booths and she was turning away from one when she found herself looking at the chest of a man she had just ran into.
“I am so sorry.” She said as she looked up at him. She had to resist the urge to say damn. He had to be at least a foot taller then she was. He was also one of the most handsome men she had ever seen. He was dressed in regency costume with black pants, dark blue jacket, and stark white shirt and cravat. He had dark brown hair that was almost black and bright blue eyes.
“It is quite alright. I should have been more careful.” He said, bringing her out of her thoughts and giving him a smile. “I feel I should be apologizing to you miss.”
“My name is Katherine. Katherine Roberts to be more exact. Most everyone calls me Kat though.” She said.
“Well Miss Roberts I am pleased to make your acquaintance. I am William McGinty, at your service.” He said before lightly kissing her hand.
“Nice to meet you.” She said as she smiled at him in awe. Even thought she knew he was likely just a guy dressing up to get girls.
*****
William was delighted with the look on the girl's face when she had first looked up at him. It had been a look of real shock. Girls so often modified their expressions in these days that seeing a true reaction was quite refreshing. The expression was particularly captivating on this woman. The first thing he noticed about her after her expression was her eyes. Which were an extraordinary brown color. Then it was her hair which was a light brown which he could clearly see because she was not wearing a bonnet. She was a delightfully odd creature. She seemed so tiny and fragile as he looked at her. He would almost say she was fairy like. Before he knew what he was dong he was escorting her around the fair. He was about to ask if she would like to have lunch when James appeared.
“Well hello there William. I was just looking for you when I saw you with this lovely lady and came to introduce myself.” He said.
“I'm Katherine Roberts.” The girl said stepping forward. William had to refrain himself from laughing as James looked like he'd choke. Women of course did not introduce themselves to men.
“My friend here who seems to have lost his voice so suddenly is Mr. James Flannigan.” William said. James seemed to come out of his shock and bowed.
“It is a pleasure to meet you.” James managed to say.
“It's nice to meet you too.” She said with a smile. In that moment William had a revelation. That he just might be able to loose his heart to this girl.
*****
Katherine ate lunch with the two men. The second one, James, was apparently a friend of the guy William. As the meal went on she started to feel that something was wrong. Everything seemed a little to historically accurate. She ended up pretty much zoning out until she heard something James said.
“... after all this is 1816.” Was all she caught of the phrase.
“What?” She suddenly exclaimed. Both the men looked over at her.
“Is everything alright?” William asked.
“Did he just say it is 1816?” She asked completely shocked.
“Yes. Why do you ask?” James asked sounding utterly confused.
“It's 2012. Not 1816.” She said not knowing how much simply she could put it.
“Very funny Miss Roberts, but I know what the year is.” James said. Katherine didn't know what to say to that.
“Obviously not.” She said. “And you can stop joking now.”
“ Miss Roberts I assure you the year is 1816, not 2012. That is far in the future”
Chapter 3
William thought that Miss Roberts looked about to faint as she clutched the table.
“If what you say is true I am 196 years in the past.” She said in a barely audible whisper.
“You should really go rest Miss Roberts. You are delusional. This is why you should always wear a hat when outside.” William said trying his best to sound neutral.
“I assure you I am fine walking in the sun and how could I be so delusional as to think I am from 196 years in the future?” She demanded. William did not know what to say to that.
“Where are you staying?” William asked. Thinking that he should most likely take her back to rest where someone could tend to her.
“Oh for the love of God! I am perfectly fine. Also if is really is 1816 where I'm staying probably doesn't exist.” Katherine said.
“Did you just blaspheme?” James asked sounding both shocked and delighted. “Anyway if you have no place to stay perhaps you could stay at William's house is with.” James then suggested.
“James!” William exclaimed.
“Oh save it William. She is the first respectable woman you've shown an interest in in years. Besides, I will be there to insure that all proprieties are observed.” James said with a quick wink.
“This form the man who had prided himself on making being a rake a near occupation?” William asked skeptically.
“Yes, but have you ever ever known me to be even the least bit rakish when it is an innocent woman in question?” Jame challenged.
“You know I am still here and can hear. You can stop acting like I'm not.” She interjected.
*****
William was surprised by how quickly he relented to letting Katherine stay at his house. He had let her settle in that afternoon. When she came down to dinner that night she wore the same dress only with nothing covering her neck and upper chest. He couldn't help thinking of how beautiful she was. He found that he didn't eat much at dinner because he kept drifting off into day dreams. Most all of them involving her in some way or another.
“Are you alright?” She asked about halfway through the meal, bringing him out of his thoughts.
“Yes Ia m perfectly fine. Why?” He asked trying to cover up his fo paw.
“You've hardly touched your food. Most men would have been done eating already.” She said. He looked down at his plate and realized just how right she was. His meal was barely touched.
“My mine is just on other things tonight.” He said in explanation. He picked up his fork and started eating. He hoped she wouldn't catch him day dreaming about her again. He couldn't think of many situations more humiliating. The rest of the meal past mostly in a slightly uneasy silence Then they all went to the drawing room. James sat down to read while Katherine went over to the piano and William sat down to watch.
*****
Katherine could feel William watching her as she started to play Fur Elise. He had seemed to be in his own world during dinner, but now his attention was focused on her. She looked up from the keys for a moment and found she was correct. William was watching her intently from his spot on the sofa beside James who was reading. When she finished the song she looked at him as he applauded.
“That was lovely.” He complimented.
“Thank you.” She replied. She had no intention of telling him that the reason she had learned piano was because most all regency women knew how. “Do you have any other music I could play?” She asked.
“I should have a few things.” William said. He then went over to one of the bookshelves and brought over a pile of papers. “Feel free to pay whatever you wish.” He offered.
“Do you play?” She asked, curious as to why else he would have piano music.
“I used to. My mother made me take lessons when I was younger.” He said.
“Come play something for me.” She suggested pleadingly as she pulled him down beside her on the bench.
“I should warn you dearie. He hasn't played I years. It could be quite horrid.” James said.
“He's right.” William said.
“Just play.” She said laughing. William just smiled at her before reaching for the pile of music, picking a song, and beginning to play, Katherine was amazed by how agilely his fingers moved over the keys. He did make a fair share of mistakes, but it didn't matter to her. She scarcely heard the song she was so intently watching him.
“Well that was worse then I hoped and better then I feared.” He said after finishing the song. She didn't say a word.
“I think you may have put her into shock.” James joked looking up from his book.
“I didn't think I was that bad.” William said in his defense.
“It was wonderful.” She said which made him laugh.
“You flatter me.” He said. She just smiled back feeling stupid.
Chapter 4
That night William found himself unable to sleep. He couldn't stop thinking about a certain Miss Katherine Roberts who he knew was sleeping just down the hall. It had took almost all his self control to not kiss her when they sat at the piano bench earlier that night. So close to each other that her thigh had touched his. If he managed to resist her he deserved damned sainthood in his opinion. He ran his fingers through his hair restlessly trying to go to sleep again.
*****
When Katherine first woke up the next morning she didn't remember where she was. Then the entire past day came back to her. She pulled the blanket up around her shoulders and walked over to the window. She saw William walking around the yard and smiled. Then she looked at the clock and realized what time it was. She dressed and went downstairs to join him.
“Did you sleep well?” She asked, drawing his attention.
“Honestly no.” He said as he came over to her. “Did you?”
“Very well. Thank you.” She said. She was unsure what to say. “Why didn't you sleep well?” She finally asked out of curiosity a few minutes later, breaking the silence.
“Honestly I'd prefer to not talk about it.” He admitted.
“Is the reason that bad?” She asked.
“Not really bad, more embarrassing for me.” He admitted.
“I'm sure I could top it.” She teased. He looked at her doubtfully.
*****
William had been trying to clear his head when the main object of his thoughts suddenly appeared. The conversation had started normally enough with her enquiring how he had slept. However now she was trying to get him to share why he had had trouble sleeping.
“Will you please tell me?” She was pleading. He looked in her eyes and realized that he was not going to win this fight. With that realization he sighed and ran his fingers through his hair like he always did when frustrated.
“I was thinking about you.” He reluctantly admitted. Her face became puzzled and he thought she looked delightful. Her mouth formed a little o, and once again found himself resisting the urge to kiss her. 'She's an innocent' He reminded himself mentally. He couldn't figure out why she as effecting him so. He had had women before.
“Is thinking of me that bad?” She asked sounding unsure as to what else she could say. He couldn't help but laugh. She looked so adorably vulnerable.
“Quite to the contrary Miss Roberts. My thoughts pertaining to you are quite pleasant.” He said to assure her. She looked down at the ground seemingly embarrassed. HE hoped she wouldn't start guessing what those thoughts were. Fantasying about a woman was one thing. Having said woman know you had fantasied about her was quite another.
“I'm guessing that I should not ask what those thoughts are.” She said quietly.
“You would be correct.” He said with a smile. “Why don't we go to breakfast?” He suggested in an attempt to change the subject a few minutes later.
“Alright.” She said. Then he offered her his arm and he lead her into the dining room.
*****
The next month passed with few awkward moment between Katherine and William. To her it seemed that he did his best to avoid being alone with her. Though she had to admit that the more time she spent in his presence the more attracted she seemed to be to him. She could sometimes feel him watching her when he thought she wasn't paying attention to him, but whenever she would look up he would quickly look away. One day in the early morning she decided to take a stroll in the gardens before breakfast. She had been walking about 15 minutes when she happened to see William leaning against a tree looking off into the distance. Reluctantly she started to walk towards him. She happened to step on a twig lying on the ground and the noise drew his attention. He whirled around and saw her.
Chapter 5
“Miss Roberts, what a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting to run into you out here.” William said. He had been day dreaming again. He had day dreamed more over the past mont then he had in his entire life, and always about the woman who stood in front of him. She just smiled and stood there looking slightly uncomfortable.
“Do you mind me asking what you were doing?” She asked after awhile.
“Just thinking.” He said Giving the most vague, but honest answer he would think of. Then he decided to take the risk and tel her what he had been thinking about. “Actually I believe that we need to talk about something.”
“We do?” She asked sounding puzzled.
“Well it is more that I feel I should confess something to you. If you will indulge me that is.” He said.
“Alright go ahead.” She said. “What is it?”
“We've known each other for about a month now. Am I right?” He asked. She nodded that he was. “Wall I feel that I should tell you that over that month I have thought of you very often.” He began. She interrupted him.
“What?” She asked her voice suddenly barely audible.
“I have grown quite fond of you.” He said hopefully. She just stared at him.
*****
Katherine knew she had to look foolish just standing there watching him in utter disbelief, but she wasn't sure what else to do.
“What exactly are you trying to say?” She asked as she braced herself against a nearby tree. He hesitated a moment before replying.
“I honestly don't know. What I know is you affect me in a way no woman ever has in all my 24 years. I want to take you so often, but at the same time I want to protect you. You are prefect.” He confessed. She took a deep breath before turning towards him. He stepped forward and took her hands in his. “I can't say this is love because I have never been in love. I would be honored if you gave me a chance to discover if it is though.” She pulled her hands from his.
“I need a moment to think.” she said in explanation. Katherine immediately thought of a few things. Her first thought was 'Aw! That is so sweet.' Her second was 'I wonder if he is being honest'. She would lean towards that he was. Then her third was 'He is to good for me.'. “I don't know what to say. You do get pints for originality. Most guys would have said I love you. I like that you didn't. I guess the only thing I can really say is that my feelings are very similar. I guess we should give it a try.” She said finally. He stepped closer to her and kissed her lightly. She wrapped her arms around his neck and he wrapped an arm around her waist pulling her against him while at he same time he felt for a tree behind then to lean against.
“We should go inside and find James.” He said in a whisper a moment later.
“We should.” She agreed not really wanting to let go of him. He laughed slightly and groaned before taking her by one hand and leading her back to the house.
*****
It was about two months later when William asked her if he could escort her to a ball.
“A real ball? Where is it?” She asked doing her best to not sound overly excited.
“It is nearby, in a few weeks. The house is only about 20 minutes away by carriage.” He said.
“I don't have a dress.” She pronounced suddenly.
“But you will. I've already thought of that dear. There is a seamstress in town who can make you something.” He offered.
“I don't have money for that though.” She protested.
“That is why I would be paying for it.” He said with a bright smile.
“I couldn't ask you to do that.” She said touched that he wanted to buy her things.
“Yes you can.” William said in protest. “We've ben together for two months. Is it really so unreasonable to let me buy you one gown?”
“I suppose not. I just have never had a man buy me clothes before.” She said.
“Well I've never bought clothes for a woman before.” William replied with a smile.
“You've certainly taken the clothes off of women enough times though.” James interjected.
“She doesn't need to hear about any of that.” William said through clenched teeth.
“I'm jus being honest with the lass. She should know you are a bit of a rake?” James said obviously enjoying himself.
“Oh is he?” Katherine asked curiously. She looked between James and William.
“He certainly is. There was this one time...” James began to say before William stopped him.
“Enough James! Katherine does not need t hear about all my sexual exploits.” William said sounding very irritated.
“It's not a big deal. After all I have heard that reformed rakes make the best husbands.” Katherine said smiling mischievously. James, who had just taken a drink, spit it back out all over the rug.
“She's a keeper William.” James said once he had had time to recover.
“Oh trust me. I know she is. I don't intend to let her go either.” William said as he looked at her lovingly.
Chapter 6
The next day Katherine went to the seamstress to plan out her dress for the ball. She decided on a dark blue gown with an empire waist, low neckline, and little puff sleeves. The dress arrived quickly and Katherine refused to show it to William until the night of the ball. Insisting she wanted to see his reaction. The morning of before the ball Katherine decided to go for a swim after breakfast. She found a pond and stripped down to he chemise before going into the water. The water only reached her waist so she pulled herself under enjoying the pleasantly cole water.
“What are you doing?” She heard an amused voice ask about half an hour later. She turned around to find William staring at her.
*****
William had been informed by James that Katherine had gown off somewhere outside after breakfast. He didn't know what he expected, but it was certainly not this. Katherine standing waist deep in water in not but her chemise which happened to be wet and clinging to her with water dripping for her hair.
“I was swimming.” She said. “Would you like to join me?” She offered with a smile.
“As pleasant as that sounds. Even though it is very tempting I must decline. I know how much I can handle and I must insist on your coming out and becoming decently attired.” He said trying to suppress a groan as he watched how the fabric clung to her.
“Alright just turn around while I dress.” She said. He did so glad to have a reason to look away. A few minutes later she told him to turn back around. She had simply put her dress on over the wet chemise which was quickly soaking the dress through. Her corset was holding in her hands.
“God save me.” He muttered. Then he offered her his arm and escorted her back to the house. She went up to her room and her had some of his old clothes sent up to her so she would have something to wear while her clothes dried. William went to his study to try to get some work done. About half an hour later there was a light knock at the door and he called our for the person to enter.
*****
Katherine came into William's study and heard him gasp.
“Hello.” She said as she closed the door behind herself.
“What are you wearing?” She heard him ask.
“The clothes you sent up for me to wear. Why?” She asked suddenly self conscious. She had felt sexy wearing pants again. They were a little loose, but felt wonderful after months in only skirts and she had her corset on beneath the shirt which practically fit her like a dress from her time would. She had even tierd a cord ar her waist so it wasn't quite so baggy. “Do you not like them?”
“You shouldn't be allowed to walk around in such attire.” He said.
“Well love you too. I walk around in less then this in my time.” She said crossing her arms across her chest.
*****
William thanked God then and there that he had so much self control when Katherine entered his office. She was wearing the pants and shirt he had sent up to her. He couldn't help staring. All he wanted to do is crush her agains him and make love to her.
“I happen to like this outfit.” She pronounced before storming out of the room. William groaned and slumped in his chair.
“God help me. If she starts to walk around dressed like that I don't know how long I can keep her an innocent.” He said to himself. That night at dinner Katherine was not present and he was informed that she had asked for a tray to be brought to her room. He assumed that she was mad and to let her calm down.
*****
Katherine woke up the next morning still slightly mad at William for the day before. She decided to avoid him until that night at the ball and apologize there. She should have known it would upset him. She ate breakfast and lunch in her room. In the early afternoon there was a knick at her door
“Can I come in?” She heard William ask through the door.
“Sure. Come on in.” She said. Then the door opened and he came in.
“I wanted to make sure we were still going to the ball tonight.” He said.
“Of course.” She said. “I should actually probably start getting ready for that.”
“Why is it women take so much longer to get ready for things such as this then we men to?” He asked.
“Why do men find it necessary to flaunt women around?” She said in reply.
“Touche my lady. I'll go an leave you to get ready now.” He said before leaving.
Chapter 7
When they arrived at the ball that night Katherine seemed excited, but nervous at the same time. William escorted her inside anxious to see her gown. When she took off her jacket he knew the wait had been worth it. She looked absolutely stunning. They danced the first two dances together. Then he handed her off to James. After which he lost track of her.
“Do you happen to know where Katherine had got off to?” William asked his friend later.
“She went out to the gardens about half an hour ago. She told me to tell you if you asked.” He said. William thanked his friend before going after her. He found her, her back to him, looking off into space leaning against a tree.
*****
“Katherine I was looking for you.” She heard a familiar voice say behind her. She turned around and found as she suspected, William standing there looking extremely handsome as always.
“Hey. What are you doing out here?” She asked.
“I was looking for you. I think we should talk about yesterday.” He said.
“I know. I wanted to apologize.” She said.
“Why would you apologize? It was my fault. You were just so distracting.” He said. She looked at him a moment before replying.
“I thought you were mad at me for wearing them around the house.” She said.
“How could I be mad at you. I wanted to pull the damned things off of you for Christ's sake.” He said. She looked shocked. “I shouldn't have said that.” He announced.
“Oh yes you should have.” She told him.
“Can you forgive me for entertaining such rakish fantasies?” He asked playfully.
“Of course, but this relationship is going to be impossible if we are going to fight all the time about absolutely nothing.” She said.
“Nothing is impossible. Couples fight. What matters is us being together. I can't be without you again though. I know that for certain. The thought of you not being in my life is the only impossible thought in my mind.” He said.
“Are you going to saw what I think you're going to?” She asked. He replied by going down on one knee and reaching into his pocket for a ring.
“Would you be willing to put up with me and be my wife? You can wear pants around to your hearts content for all I care. I love you and am fully willing to let you reform my rakish ways so I can be the best husband I am capable of being.” He said. She laughed and pulled him to his feet.
“Of course I will you idiot.” She said before putting the ring on her finger and kissing him. “How soon can we be married?” She asked when she eventually pulled her mouth away from his.
“Well that depends if you want a traditional wedding. Of course we could always go up to Gretna Green.” He teased.
“I think we should do a traditional wedding.” She said. “After all a girl dreams about her wedding nearly all her life.”
“In that case it will be a month at the earliest for the bans to be read. Though I am sure mother would insist on a longer engagement.” He said.
“What if your mother hates me?” She asked suddenly.
“How could she not adore you?” He asked. “I will send her a message tomorrow and ask her to come meet you.” She kissed him again before they went back inside. They went home that night extatic for the coming wedding.
About a week later Katherine paused a moment while dressing to admire the ring again. It was a plain gold band with a little ruby set into it. Then there was a knock at the door.
“Who is it?” She asked.
“Mrs. McGinty, William's mother.” A voice replied. Katherine went over to the door and opened it after a quick glance in the mirror.
“Sorry about that. I am sort of finishing up dressing.” She admitted,
“It's quite alright. Let me help you. Turn around.” The women said. Katherine did so while contemplating the woman who would be her mother-in-law. She had brown hair and blue eyes like William, but she was a few heads shorter then her song and was still quite beautiful.
“There you are dear.” Mrs. McGinty said a moment later.
“Thank you.” Katherine said coming back to reality and turning around. “I hope you had an easy trip.”
“I did. I was fascinated when William informed me that he was ready to marry. He had stubbornly refused to marry for years.” The woman informed her. “I was even more fascinated when he mentioned he had fallen in love.”
“I hope you will approve of me.” Katherine admitted shyly and a bit anxiously if truth be told. Mrs. McGinty smiled kindly.
“I am sure I will. Don't worry though. I would never stand in the way of my son's happiness.” She assured her. “I just hope there isn't a baby in question.”
“Still I hope you will like me.”Katherine said. “I assure you though. I am not pregnant.”
“I'm sure I will like you.” The other woman replied with a kind smile.
*****
William sat in his study wondering how his mother and Katherine were getting along. His mother had arrived over an hour ago and had promptly gone up to meet Katherine. He had seen neither of them since. Suddenly he heard women laughing in the hall and went out to investigate. His mother and Katherine were laughing happily and they looked to be going out.
“And where would you ladies be going?” He asked happily from the doorway.
“I am taking your bride to plan her wedding dress and trousseau.” His mother informed him as he walked over to him.
“And a few more day dresses.” Katherine said.
“And do I get any say in any of this?” He joked.
“No.” Both women said in unison.
“As I suspected. Well I will see you this evening then.” He said as he leaned down to kiss Katherine. After a minute or two he heard his mother clear her throat.
“When you are finished Katherine we do need to be going.” She said. William let go of her.
“Go on then.” He said with a smile. As they were leaving his mother shot him a warning look as she followed Katherine out the door.
Chapter 8
Katherine sat at a table in the seamstress shop in town with the seamstress and William's mother. They were looking at patterns and they hadn't made any progress since they had come in two hours ago. Suddenly Katherine got an idea in her head.
“Do you have paper and a pencil I could use?” She asked. The seamstress nodded that he did and handed then to her. Katherine sketched out the basic idea and turned it to the other women.
“That is lovely.” Mrs. McGinty said with a smile.
“It shouldn't be to hard to make either. Simple and elegant.” The seamstress said.
“Could it be ready in a month?” Katherine asked. Both the women looked at her amused.
“Yes I promise it will be ready.” The seamstress said. Then then took her measurements and planned her trousseau. Then they went home to plan the rest of the wedding. Katherine honestly felt overwhelmed.
*****
William was amazed over the next few weeks how much his mother and Katherine accomplished. When the month was up he was ready to ave the business over with. He was ready to be married to Katherine. When he really thought about it all the things he had found the most attractive in the women he'd been with were all combined in Katherine. She was perfect. The morning of the wedding he got dressed in his best clothes and went to the church where he was told Katherine was already getting ready. About an hour later he was standing in the chapel waiting for her to come down the aisle to him. She had refused to tell him anything about her dress except that it was white. The door finally opened as she was walking towards him. More enchanting then he had ever seen her. The gown was the bright white color of virgin snow. The gown was much the same as the one she had worn to the ball only the bodice came down to a point on both the top and bottom. He just wanted to stand there looking at her.
*****
When Katherine stepped into the chapel her eyes automatically found William. He was staring at her in awe. When she reached him he seemed to come back to reality as he helped her up the steps.
“I love you.” He whispered.
“I love you too.” She said. Then the ceremony began. It went fairly quickly because they decided on not having a full service. When they were pronounced man and wife and were told to kiss William lightly pulled her against him and gave her a kiss that made her head spin. They had a wedding lunch back at the house followed by a small party which included dinner. Once all the guests left William led her up to his room. He left her alone for a few minutes to change. Katherine picked one of the many nightgowns she had ordered and groaned. Her thought was, 'This is so not sexy'. Then she heard the doorknob turning and knew William was returning.
*****
William entered his room expecting Katherine to be ready for bed. What he didn't expect was what he saw. She wore a silk nightgown that tied at the neck and had a slit down to just below her hips closed only by hooks which were present only every two inches so he could see bits of skin where the fabric peeked open.
“Sorry it isn't sexier.” She told him.
“Please do not apologize.” He said as he closed the distance between them. “You are already far to tempting.” He said just before he scooped her up into his arms and carried her to the bed.
*****
When Katherine woke up the next morning she felt like the most beautiful woman on the earth. William was still asleep next to her resting peacefully. She got out of bed and got dressed in one of her new dresses. The night before had been like a scene from a romance novel. William being the experienced rake and her being the innocent he somehow fell for. Suddenly she felt strong arms go around her waist.
“Good morning my darling.” He said in her ear.
“Good morning William.” She said as she leaned back against him. “Last night was amazing.” She said not knowing what else to say.
“It was” He agreed before pressing a single kiss to the side of her neck. “I trust my beautiful wife slept well.”
“Yes I did. “She said with a laugh as he turned her around. “Or at least the little time I had to sleep.” William laughed. Suddenly she gasped.
“What is it?” He asked suddenly becoming serious.
“We forget to get a wedding picture.” She said. “Do people in this time even have those?”
“Not generally, but I am sure some do. If you want we can have a portrait done though.” He offered.
“Oh it's fine. So what should we do today?” She asked.
“We are going to be leaving this afternoon so we need to pack.” He informed her.
“What? Where are we going?” She asked.
“I am taking you to Dublin.” He said. “Though I must admit I am not going to enjoy other men lusting after you.”
“At least you will be able to be confident that you are the only one I want looking at me that way.” She told him. He pulled her tightly against him.
“And you my dear can be confident that I will be thinking such thoughts about you.” He promised. “Actually I am having them now remembering last night.”
“We can't can we? After all you said yourself we need to pack.” She said with a gasp.
“To hell we can't.” He said.
*****
William grabbed his wife and swooped her up into his arms. Then carried her the short distance to their bed. Once he had her dress off her and she was laying there in her corset, chemise, et al. He had to admit the sight of her partially disrobed thrilled him.
“You are the most exquisitely beautiful woman I have ever met.: He told her. “Most likely in all of existence.”
“I don't feel very sexy right now.” She admitted. “I wish I had some lingerie from my time.”
“Do I dare ask what those would look like?” He asked as he stood there marveling at his wife's beauty.
“Very scanty in the simplest of terms.” She said with a smile. “As in barely covering my charms.” She teased.
“You are far to tempting as it is.” He said.” I don't know if I could handle you wearing anything like that.” Then he climbed into the bed next to her.
Chapter 9
They ended up not leaving for Dublin till the following afternoon. When they arrived at William's house there in Dublin Katherine was not sure how she could handle society, but he assured her she would do him proud. It was quickly evident that she fit in perfectly.
“I have a surprise for you.” She told him one night after dinner when they were sitting alone in the sitting room six months later.
“Of you do?” He asked sounding amused.
“Yes. I am going to go up to get it ready. You just can't come up to the bedroom for half an hour.” She said.
“I am curious now, but you can be sure I will count the minutes.” He said. With that Katherine slipped out of the room and went up to her and William's room. She shaved, changed into her “surprise”, and let her hair down and flow down her back. She looked into the mirror and for once she felt incredibly sexy. She wore what she had managed to make halfway look like lingerie form her time. A corset that stopped just under her bust with shear fabric hanging from it that went down to her hips and the panties she had been wearing when she traveled. She heard a knock at the door. “Can I come in now darling?” William called through the door.
“yes I'm ready.” She said. Then the door opened and he came in and closed the door before stopping in his tracks and staring at her. “Surprise.” She said with a smile.
“Dear can I inquire what the devil you are wearing.” He asked finally remembering how to speak.
“This is the best thing I could fix up to show you what lingerie from my time is like.” She replied. “It's your surprise. Don't you like it?”
“I like it yes, but I am debating two options.” He said.
“Two? What are they?” She asked.
“I am caught between just staring at you all night or stripping it off you and making love to you.” He said.
“If it helps your decision making process the purpose behind it was number two.” She confided.
“Two it is then.” He said.
*****
That night William lay awake for a long while watching his wife sleep. That is why when he woke up the next morning unable to find her anywhere on the grounds he panicked. She seemed to have vanished into thin air. He was so frightened eh would never see her again or worse yet that she had only been a dream. Though the wedding band on his left hand kept proving the second thought untrue.
*****
When Katherine woke up she was confused at first. This wasn't her and William's bed in either house. It wasn't either room either. IT was her room back home in Georgia. Surely William hadn't been a dream. Her wedding ring and the fact she was naked in bed proved that. She got out of bed and dressed in some sweats before going going downstairs where her parents were eating breakfast. They stared at her in amazement and shock. She poured herself a glass of orange juice and had put two pieces of toast in the toaster by the time one of her parents spoke.
“Dear where have you been?” Her dad asked.
“You wouldn't believe me if I told you.” She said.
“Well you better try since you've been gone for close to a year.” Her mom said.
“I'm telling you, you won't believe me.” She said.
“Try me.” Her dad said.
“I kind of traveled back to the year 1816, fell in love, and got married.” She said waiting for their reactions.
“You're right. I don't believe you.” Her mom said.
“I swear to God I am telling the truth.” She said. “His name is William McGinty. We have been married for 6 months.”
“Honey I think it was just a dream. You could have been unconscious this whole time.” Her dad said.
“If it was a dream would I have this?” She asked holding out her hand and displaying her wedding right. “I can't explain it, but I am telling the truth.”
“Alright dear calm down. We can discuss this later. You should go rest for now.” Her mom said. “Maybe go out with Shannon tonight.
*****
“William try to calm down. She can't have just disappeared.” James was saying
“How can you tell me to calm down? My wife is missing. I think I am perfectly sane to worry about her.” William said as he paced in front of his desk.
“Will we'll find her. It hasn't even been a full day yet. I'm sure she's fine.” James pointed out.
“She could be anywhere. If anything has happened to her. I could never forgive myself.” HE said. “She is my life now.”
*****
That night Katherine went out with Shannon to a local club.
“I've missed you girl.” Shannon said as they sat down at a table.
“I've missed you too.” Katherine said. “Life had been pretty good though.”
“I bet. Having a sexy regency man and all.” Shannon joked.
“Shannon!” Katherine exclaimed.
“What it isn't like he's gonna hear me. You're lucky I was home on break woman.” Shannon said.
“I know I know.” Katherine said. They sat there for awhile when a guy came over to their table.
“Can I guy you a drink?” He asked Katherine.
“Nah. I'm fine. Thanks though.” She said with a smile.
“Could I ask you to dance then?” He asked. She could tell he was going to flirt pretty heavy.
“Sorry, but I'm happily married.” She said as she proudly displayed her ring. The guy walked away leaving them alone.
“What is wrong with you? That guy was hot.” Shannon said.
“Trust me William is hotter. I don't want any other guy.” Katherine said. “Having other guys hit on me just seems wrong.”
“Well well I never thought I'd see the day when you didn't want to be hit on by a hot guy.”
“I don't mind hot guys hitting on me. As long as it's my husband.” Katherine said smiling.
*****
William was beside himself. Katherine had been gone for three months and e had no clue where she was. He felt so useless. His wife was missing and though he'd been doing his best he couldn't help her.
“I feel like I am failing her James.” He confided one night at dinner.
“You're not failing her. I think you've done everything humanly possible trying to find her.” James said.
“Then why can't I find her?” William asked.
*****
Katherine was cleaning the bathroom when she suddenly stopped. The doors of cabinet were open and she was staring at her pack of pads there. She had just realized that she hadn't had her period since she had been home.
“Oh my God.” She muttered as she fumbled for her phone.
“Hey girlie what's up?” Shannon said when she answered.
“I'm pregnant.” Katherine said.
“What? Are you sure?” Shannon demanded.
“Yes I just realized it. I haven't had my period since I came home.” Katherine said. “Can you come over.”
“Of course I can. I'll be right there.” She said. Then she hung up. Shannon arrived about an hour later with a bag in her hand.
“What's that?” Katherine asked from the couch. Shannon tossed her the bag.
“Chocolate and pregnancy tests. Just so we can be sure.” Shannon said.
“I am almost completely certain I don't need a pregnancy test to tell me what I obviously know.” Katherine said.
Chapter 10
William cam into this and Katherine's room that night and headed straight to bed exhausted where he found Katherine and another woman sleeping. He lightly shook her awake.
“William am I back?” She asked as he pulled her into his arms.
“Yes thank the Lord. Where have you been? I've been going insane looking or you.” He admitted.
“I want back to my time. I have good new though.” She said.
“Let's get this other woman awake first.” He suggested.
“Oh that'll be easy.” She said. She lightly kicked the other woman's arm. “Shannon wake up.”
“Do I have to?” The girl who was apparently named Shannon mumbled.
“Yes unless you want me to literally kick you out of the bed.” Katherine said with a laugh.
“If you're going to be like this the whole pregnancy I am disowning you.” She said as she sat up.
“What? You're pregnancy?” William asked shocked. He looked down at Katherine who looked uncomfortable.
“I did say I had new.” Katherine said as she pulled her lower lip between her teeth obviously nervous to see his reaction.
“Well say something man.” The girl said.
“Shannon I think you should go. This is sort of a private moment.” Katherine told her.
*****
Katherine led Shannon to a bedroom next door and came back hoping William would have let the truth sink in by now.
“Are you going to say anything?” She asked once inside
“How far along are you?” He asked.
“I don't know for sure. At least three months.” She said. “So what are you thinking about having a baby?”
“I think it is going to be wonderful. It's hard to think that I am going to be a father. I am the father right?” He asked teasingly.
“Well you're the only man I've slept with so you better be the father.” She said. She walked over to him and he pulled her down beside him onto the bed.
“I've missed you.” He said.
“I've missed you too. It felt so odd not waking up beside you each morning.” She said as she snuggled up next to him and inhaled his scent again. She was looking forward to waking up in the morning smelling like him from sleeping so close to him.
“I know, but you're back now.” He said. “That's what matters.”
*****
The next morning at breakfast Katherine was amazed by how easily James took the news and Shannon's arrival. Luckily they wore the same size so Shannon was properly dressed. When they had first entered the room and Shannon had saw James she immediately gave Katherine a look that seemed to say, 'Damn. Who is he?'
“Shannon this is William's friend James Flannigan. James this is my best friend Shannon Fabray.” Katherine said to introduce them. James took one of Shannon's hands and kissed it.
“It is a pleasure Miss Fabray.” He said.
“Just call me Shannon.” Shannon instructed.
“Very well. Why don't you tell me about yourself.” James suggested. Shannon did so as they ate. James seemed entranced and hanging on her every word. Over ht next three or four months James and Shannon seemed to become very close. Katherine suspected that very soon they would become an official couple. One day William decided to have a portrait done of her. She complied and would sit there for hours on end while the artist painted her. One day William came in to see how it was progression.
“How are you darling?” He asked.
“Tired of sitting here all day in the same position.” She answered.
“I am almost done. Just a few more minutes.” The artist promised. When the artist announced he was done William helped her up off the sofa and they went to look at it. The painting showed her sitting on the sofa smiling one hand on her stomach and the other resting beneath her chin.
“It is beautiful?” She complimented.
“Just like you.” William said as he kissed her head. With that the artist smiled and left them alone. William wrapped his arms around her and pulled her against him. He kissed her and she was about to wrap her arms around his neck when the baby kicked.
“Oh.” She said suddenly pulling back and putting her hands on her stomach.
“What is it?” He asked. “The baby isn't coming is it? It's to early still right?”
“”The baby kicked.” She said. He put a hand on her belly just in time to feel the baby kick again.
“That's our baby. Feels nice and strong.” William said proudly. “I wonder if we will have a boy or a girl.” She laughed.
“Which do you hope it is?” She teased.
“I hope it is a baby girl who looks just like her mother.” He said. Then he squatted down to address her belly. “Yes that is papa's baby girl in there isn't it?”
“You are so goofy.” She said. “Most men would want a son, but apparently not you.” He laughed.
“I can leave my land and fortune to a daughter just as easily as I can a son.” He said getting up.
“Most men don't though.” She said.
“Most men aren't married to a time traveler.” He pointed out. Then he swept her up in his arms and took her downstairs.
*****
Katherine was in bed reading next to William when her water broke a few months later.
“What the heck?” She said as she sat down her book and looked under the blanket. Then she realized what was going on. “Oh my God.”
“What's wrong?” He asked opening his eyes and looking at her.
“My water just broke. The baby is coming.” She said. “You should go get a doctor.”
“I am not leaving you when our child is about to be born.” He protested.
“Send James of Shannon them.” She said. “Just get a doctor here.” William left the room and came back with Shannon.
“Hey girlie how are you doing?” She asked.
“I'm freaking out about having a doctor here.” She said.
“Don't worry about that. James is getting him.” Shannon said.
“Good, now I just have to wait for the baby to come.” Katherine said.
“I still do not understand why we did not just get a midwife.” William said.
“Her family has a history of having difficult births.” Shannon said. Just then Katherine's contractions grew stronger. William sat down on the bed beside her and tried his best to help her relax.
Chapter 11
The doctor arrived about an hour later and James escorted Shannon out of the room leaving only the and William there to witness the birth.
“You have a perfectly healthy baby girl here.” The doctor said. After he cleaned her off and put her into Katherine's arms.
“Well you got at least part of your wish. We have baby girl.” Katherine said.
“I will leave you two to take care of her wile I go.” The doctor said. William nodded and sat down on the bed beside her.
“A beautiful baby girl. Now she needs a name.” He pointed out.
“I think she should be named Allison.” Katherine said.
“Allison McGinty. I like the sound of that. We can call her Ali.” He said.
“Do you want to hold her?” Katherine offered.
“Of course I do.” He said with a smile. Katherine handed him Allison and watched as he kissed his newborn daughter's forehead. Just then they were joined by James and Shannon.
“William McGinty holding a baby. If you would have told me a few years ago I would see this I would have called you insane.” James said teasingly.
“Well you practically follow Shannon around like a love sick fool.” William said back.
“That's enough from the two of you.” Shannon said. “You can both shut your mouths.”
“What is the little one's name anyway?” James asked after smiling lovingly at Shannon.
“Allison, though we will probably call her Ali.” Katherine said.
“That's beautiful.” James said. “She is a beautiful baby.
“Just like her mother.” William said as he smiled lovingly at Katherine. Just then the baby started crying.
“Give her here. She's probably hungry.” Katherine said.
*****
A few days later Allison opened her eyes for the first time. They were the same color blue as her father's.
“She's going to look like you.” Katherine predicted a few months later after putting her to bed.
“Just because she had my eyes doesn't mean she'll look like me, besides she is already to beautiful to look like me. Is she's even half as beautiful as you are when she grows up I will have my hands full keeping the young men away.” He said only half jokingly before pulling her into his arms.
“I love you.” She said as she wrapped her arms around his neck. “You are such a great father.” He just laughed and kissed her. Then he backed her up until they tumbled onto their bed. When eh tried to start undoing her dress she stopped him. “Your mother is due any minute we should really be down there to welcome her. What kind of woman would she think me if she arrived and we were in bed?”
“An obedient one. Most men I am sure do not have this much trouble getting their wives into ed.” He teased.
“They aren't married to me.” She pointed out.
“A fact I thank God for every day.” He said.
Chapter 12
On Allison's first birthday they had a small party with William's mother, Shannon, and James. Allison looked like a younger Katherine in every aspect except her eyes. After putting her to bed that night Katherine and William sat up reading until they heard her crying. Katherine marked her spot and set the book down before walking next door to Allison's room. Alarmingly Allison was not in her crib where she had left her. One of the windows were open and she knew they had all been tightly shut. She ran as fast as she could back to their room frantically.
“Allison's missing. She wasn't in her crib and one of the windows was opened.” She said.
“What? Do you think someone stole her?” He asked. She nodded holding back tears. He got out of bed and went over to her. “Don't just to conclusions. Maybe someone came and got her and has her with them.”
“William sometimes a mother just knows when something is wrong. Especially with their children.” Katherine said.
“I know, but I am going to see if there is a chance that someone else has her.” He said. Then he gave her hand a light squeeze and left the room.
*****
The next afternoon they received a random note demanding 200 pounds by that friday be delivered to a designated place and promising they would then get Allison back. Katherine read it before showing William.
“I swear to God if she had even a single bruise I will hunt them down.” William said angerly.
“Hun calm down. They promised that as soon as we pay the ransom we will get her back safe and sound.” Katherine said.
“She's my little girl. I'm worried about her.” William said.
“I know I am too.” Katherine said as William pulled her against him.
“I am going to go to the bank right now and get the money so we can have it ready.” William said.
“Alright, hurry back.” She said before giving him a kiss before he left. He was back about an hour later. Dinner that night was observed in a strained silence.
“I can tell you one thing, if she is hurt even a little heads will roll.” Shannon said.
“Damn right.” James said.
“James watch your language. As much as I am sure we all share that sentiment.” William's mother said. “You should know better than to use such language. Especially in front of ladies.”
“Sorry Mrs. McGinty.” James said sounding sincere.
“I hope she's alright.” Katherine said as she stopped eating and sat down her fork. “I bet she is so scared.”
“Oh Kat we're all worried. I'm sure you and William the most our of all of us, but you have to just comfort yourself in knowing that we are doing all we can.” Shannon said.
“I just feel terrible. If I would have gotten there a few seconds earlier I could likely have helped her.” Katherine said.
“Don't talk like that. This is not your fault.” William insisted as he took one of her hands in his.
“I know, but I just feel like I could have stopped this from happening.” She said.
*****
That Friday William and James went to make the exchange. They insisted that the women stay at the house insisting that if it was only the two of them it would go faster. They went to the designated place arriving just on time. Two men were there one help Allison. She was blindfolded and gagged.
“How are we to do this?” William asked in a no nonsense voice.
“We walk towards each other. You give me the money and I give you the girl.” The man holding Allison said.
“She better not be hurt. Not even a tiny scratch.” William said. “If she is I will hunt you down.”
“She is perfectly fine. Now come on and make the exchange.” The other man said. William pulled the money out and the two men started walking towards each other. William handed over the envelope of bank notes and the man handed over Allison after checking it. William clutched his daughter against his chest. Then the other two men disappeared.
“IS she really alright?” James asked William, who had just been checking her nodded.
“Not even an unclean diaper.” William said happily as he kissed her forehead.
“Well let's get her back to the girls. You know they are ll worried sick.” James said.
*****
Katherine was sitting in the front parlor waiting anxiously with Shannon and William's mom when William and James got back. William was carrying Allison in his arms. Katherine jumped up from her chair and ran over to William taking Allison from his arms.
“Is she alright?” Katherine asked.
“She didn't even have a soiled diaper.” William said.
“Thank God.” Katherine said as she kissed Allison's cheek and help her tight.
“Yes thank God.” Mrs. McGinty said. That day everyone took turns holding Allison even during dinner. When they went to bed Katherine took Allison with them.
*****
“You two are my world. I hope nothing bad ever happens again. I would give me like for both of you, because without you both I have nothing.” William said a while later after Katherine and Allison were both fast asleep. Then he got ready for bed an lay there for a long time just watching the two girls who meant more to him then life itself sleeping peacefully.
