MaryAnna (S1, E1)

by Rinisha

Sneaking to the party

Somewhere in America, lives Mary .

She is a fourteen-year-old girl with dark black hair and blue eyes, which made her very beautiful. She lives with her father, mother and her seventeen-year-old brother, Alex, in a house in Eastwood Valley.

Alex and Mary attend the same school, Eastwood, two streets away from their street.

An afternoon when school had just ended.

'Leave me alone, Gloria,'

Mary said bitterly to a girl with blonde braids and gray eyes. She was wearing a red dress with a white belt. And small earrings that matched her nail polish. She said to Mary:

'First, I want you to give me my necklace back.'

'You made that up yourself, because this necklace is mine.'

Gloria, made her eyes sharp and said: 'If you don't give me back my necklace now, I will tell the headmaster that you put salt in his coffee yesterday.'

Mary became furious and said: 'That is so not true!'

Gloria said with a raised head:

'The necklace, now.'

Mary shuddered for a moment and then said:

'No.'

As Mary walked away, Gloria pulled Mary's hair from behind, causing Mary to fall backwards. Gloria bent over her and snatched the necklace from her neck. She gave Mary a kick on her upper right arm and tightened the necklace around her neck. She looked satisfied and spun around. Mary was furious! She stood up and started fighting with Gloria.

'Give that back!'

Gloria also fought back and started screaming like an innocent little sheep:

'Help, Mary stop now. Leave my necklace alone.'

Mary hit Gloria in her face with a fist and this did leave a mark. Gloria pulled Mary's hair without stopping.

'You're just jealous because Jake didn't give you a present on your birthday, but he did give me.'

Gloria grabbed her more firmly by her hair and said,

'Listen child, that necklace was always meant for me, but of course you didn't know that.'

Mary now kicked Gloria to the ground and started pulling on the necklace.

'Help, Mary has gone mad!'

cried out Gloria. Mary said sarcastically,

'Dear mummy, isn't there to help you now. Now you see what happens when you want to mess with me. Hand over that necklace, you jealous idiot.'

Gloria squeezed Mary's shoulder, which hurt badly, but Mary did not relent. Instead, she bit Gloria's arm and did not let go.

Alex and his best friend, Jake, were just passing by then. Seeing the two fighting, Alex threw his school bag on the ground at lightning speed and flew towards Mary.

His light brown hair flew in his face blocking his vision, but that didn't stop him.

'Let go of her Mary.'

He tugged at Mary as Mary tried to get the necklace loose.

'Mary, do you want to get in trouble? Stop it!’

Mary let go of Gloria and stepped away from her. Gloria stood up and wanted to give Mary a fist in her face too, but Jake stopped her and said, 'I don't think so. Hand it over.' Gloria untied the necklace and handed it to Jake. Mary had probably been pulling very hard on the necklace and actually fought hard too, because there were some red streaks on Gloria's neck and she also got emerging swellings.

Mary did have a busted lip and nail marks in her shoulder, but that did not deter her.

'How can you?"

asked Alex irritably, looking at Mary. Mary was angry at this question and said:

'How can I? How can I? This idiot steals my necklace and claims it belongs to her. Then you want to expect me to do nothing?' Gloria felt offended and said:

'It wasn't even meant for you, you crazy little dwarf.'

They would have started fighting again if Jake and Alex hadn't kept them apart.

Alex, Jake and Mary walked out of the school yard and onto the sandy street.

Mary knocked some sand off her long skirt, wiped her bloodied lip on her sleeve, She also rearranged her hair properly. Alex and Jake who were walking between her then started laughing out of the blue. Mary looked at them strangely and started laughing too.

'Why are you laughing?'

Jake just couldn't recover from laughing. Alex said,

'You totally beat up Gloria, Mary. And on top of that, you gave yourself a busted lip.'

Mary said giggling:

'But I thought it was justified, so it doesn't matter.'

Jake said: 'Here, your necklace Anna.'

Mary was actually called MaryAnna, but nobody called her that and she didn't like it either. She preferred just being Mary, only her father called her Anna and Jake too to tease her. But that didn't matter so much.

Mary accepted Jake's necklace and said:

'Thank you.'

Alex said: 'Actually, it's all Jake's fault.'

'My fault?' said Jake indignantly. Mary also asked,

'How then?'

Alex just went on and said: 'If he hadn't given you that necklace first this would never have happened.'

Jake said: 'It's just a little present, man.'

Jake kicked a pebble off the road and walked off the front of the road with his hands in his trouser pockets and said:

'Alex, man. come on.'

Alex twisted his eyes and said:

'You know what I mean.'

Mary lifted her bag and said:

'Jake, you didn't tell us what time to come tonight.'

Alex frowned for a moment and said,

'Is there some kind of party I don't know about?'

Jake kicked another pebble off the path and said:

'I told you already, anyway, it's my twin brother and sister's birthday party.'

Mary said teasingly to Alex:

'Brother, don't tell me you forgot, your best friend's brother and sister's birthday, oh god. And you call yourself a loyal friend.'

'Shame, shame, shame'

Jake said along with Mary's conversation.

'Stop it guys.'

They were almost home already, Jake's house was a little further than theirs, but that didn't matter.

Jake eventually asked:

'So Anna, what are you going to tell your dad when he asks what's wrong with your lip?'

'Good thing you said that, because frankly I haven't thought about that. What do I tell Alex?'

'Well something good, so you can go to the party in the evening, otherwise I'll go myself you know.'

'That's so not fair!'

They arrived at their house chatting together.

'Well'

said Mary, 'if you don't see me tonight, Jake. I might be at home enjoying my dad's lecture.'

Jake laughed and said:

'Okay, I'll see you later, Anna. Alex, man. Later.'

'Bye' Alex and Mary both said.

Mary took a deep breath and said,

"Here we go,"

and walked into the house.

Their father was as always, working in his study room. Mary tried to get to her room as quickly as possible to make herself presentable.

'MaryAnna, where do you think you are going?'

'Oh man.' said Alex teasingly walking past her to her room, Mary poked him in his side and gave him a deadly look.

Mary walked to the kitchen, where her mother was busy serving dinner.

'Hey ma.'

said Mary without looking at her mother. Her mother looked at her damaged lips and the bruise on her face.

'What did you do, MaryAnna?'

Mary looked at her mother and said:

'It's nothing, ma. Please leave it.'

Her mother gave her a stern look and said: 'There is a blue tonic in the cupboard use it. And go and freshen up quickly yourself before your father comes for lunch.'

The door to the study opened then, you could hear it exactly because it made a grim sound like someone scratching against a plate with their nails. Mary ran up the stairs at speed and fled into her room. If father had seen her, she could only dream of going to the party tonight.

She got into the shower and let the cold water run all over her body. The water burned the nail marks in her skin on her shoulders and she washed the dried blood off her lips.

After the bath, she smeared some of the blue tonic on her lips which burned. She wore a dress with sleeves so that her shoulders were covered. She thought she looked pretty good already, so she went downstairs.

The table was already set and her father and Alex were already seated at the table.

Mary walked quietly and as normally as possible to sit at the table. Her mother brought a carafe of water and looked at her for a moment, but then sat down too.

They were eating parmesan chicken with potatoes.

Mary was so glad that her father did not suspect anything, because this meant then that she could go to the party. That was nice, then she could finally see Lara again.

Lara was Jake's sister; she and Mary got along very well. But they saw each other very little, because Lara went to a fashion design school and stayed on campus there too. She usually came home on weekends or holidays. But if she could see her earlier, that was a bonus, they could have a nice chat together, Mary thought. But then it came,

"What happened to your face, Anna?’

Mary was shocked and annoyed, how does he know? I even put on some make-up to hide the bruise.

'Nothing'

she replied calmly and continued eating. Her heart was pounding so hard that if you listened carefully you could hear it yourself. Her mother took a sip of water and looked out of the corner of her eye at Mary and Alex at the same time. Her father put his knife and fork neatly at an angle in his plate and looked sternly at Mary.

'I'll ask again. What happened at school Mary?'

Mary batted her eyes and said:

'I got into an argument with Gloria. She stole my necklace and claimed it was hers, she's just jealous. I wanted my necklace back, so yeah.'

Alex sat quietly and did not move a fin, because he knew his father would take him to task for this. Even though he had no part in it.

Father said to Mary:

'What did I tell you about fighting and Gloria Stone?'

'But, it's not my fault...'

'What did I say!' her father said sharply. 'Anna, you really disappoint me child and besides you are a girl. Do you know who Gloria's father is?'

Mary thought it was very unfair for her father to call her out like that for something that was not entirely her fault and she protested.

'Father, I know all about Gloria, yes. And also that she's quite a jealous bully.'

'Stop!' said father angrily 'You're still at her father's school and if his daughter-love is now going to tell him what a certain Anna Bradshaw did to her, you could be out of school tomorrow too. Do you understand? And then you will not only ruin it for yourself, but also for Alexander. And you, Alexander. Didn't you do anything?’

Alex said, 'Father, I came too late to prevent it. The teacher was still busy saying something, so I stayed behind for five minutes. And I came...'

'So, this little story of yours means you didn't fulfil your duty as an elder brother.'

Alex said nothing, but Mary did.

'Father, you are not allowed to do this.'

Mother grabbed Mary's hand and signaled to her 'not now'.

Mary didn't listen and just kept going.

'Alex didn't do anything.'

Father was angry now and said:

'Anna! This is no way to defend yourself and also get into a fight with the headmaster's daughter over a stupid necklace!'

Mary got angry and now shouted at her father:

'Stupid necklace? Do you know what this necklace means to me? This is a friendship necklace I got from someone, someone who finally wants to be friends with me. And doesn't want to keep a distance from me, because I come from the Bradshaw family. Have you seen how the kids at school look at us? You can ask Alex, he can tell you all about it.'

'Anna, this is enough! You have to stay home and are not allowed to go to Jake's party.'

Mary was very angry, this was not fair what her father was doing. She got up from the table and stomped up the stairs: 'Uhgg...'

Alex thought the same for him and started helping his mother clear the table.

Mother said: 'Richard, the boy,' and she looked at him and Alex.

Richard said: 'Alexander, although you could hardly do anything about it, you did your best, so you can go.'

Alex said: 'I'm not going without Mary, dad. It's no big deal.'

Richard said: 'Alexander, Jake is your friend. You have to go.'

'Fine.'

Mary lay on her bed bored.

She took her phone out of her dresser drawer and went to watch some youtube movies. What else was she supposed to do? She was not allowed to go to the party and there was no point in going back to fight with her father. He had already made up his mind.

At least four hours passed and it was seven o'clock. Mary had fallen asleep from doing nothing and sitting bored. Alex then very carefully entered her room.

He walked up to her and gently woke her up.

'Mary, Mary. Wake up.'

Mary woke up quietly, the light from the room blinding her a little. She saw Alex and said,

'What do you want, Alex. I'm trying to sleep here. Do you want my charger? It's in the cupboard. Take it and go, please. Let me sleep.'

She pulled the blanket over her face. Alex said very quietly,

'Do you want to shout, you're going to wake father. Get up, Mary and go and freshen up. We're going to the party.'

Mary pulled the blanket away from her face when she heard the party.

'I'm not allowed to go, so yes I don't care.'

Alex turned his eyes and said,

'Will you stop that, I'm trying to take you without anyone knowing and you're not making any effort to help out.'

Mary was interested now and asked:

'Are you going to sneak me to the party with you?'

'If you do quickly, yes. I'm going out now, make sure you're ready in ten minutes.'

Mary was so happy, she flew around her brother's neck and gave him a kiss on the cheek. 'Thank you, thank you, thank you.' Alex didn't like that and said:

'Yes, yes. Stop that.'

He walked out of the room and said: 'Ten minutes.'

Mary was in seventh heaven, she could still go to the party, even if it was sneaky.

She could still see Lara, Bryan and Jake, great!

Within five minutes, she was bathed and polished.

She opened her wardrobe and picked out a nice evening dress. She took a dress with a dark blue top and a soft light blue bottom with flowers on it. It looked really pretty on her.

She put some mascara and a pink blush color on her cheeks. She put her hair in a tight ponytail and wore small white earrings. She also put on some red lipstick, but it burned a bit as her lips were still chapped.

Alex came back after ten minutes, he opened the door and said,

'Don't tell me you're still in the bathroom, Mary.'

Then he noticed her and said: 'Wow, you look nice. For the first time.'

Mary said:

'Alex, stop that.'

Alex laughed and said:

'Okay, maybe not for the first time. But you do look good. You look the same age as me now.'

'Am I overdressed?'

Alex said: 'Meh, a bit. I don't think it's a fancy-dress dinner party. Well, what are we waiting for, let's go.'

They walked quietly down the stairs and just when they thought they could finally open the door, someone called out.

'MaryAnna, where do you think you're going?'

Mary had so hoped no one would see her. It was her mother. Mary quietly turned around and said,

'Sorry, okay. I'm going back to the room.'

Her mother stopped her and said:

'You can go. Just make sure you get home before 9.30pm, okay?'

Mary smiled and said: 'Sure mum.'

Mother gave Alex a kiss on the cheek and said:

'Thank you, Alex.'

Alex winked and said: 'Anytime. It's my little sister after all.'

Mary turned her eyes and said:

'Whatever.'

They walked out of the house.

Along the way, they talked about Bryan, Lara's twin brother, Lara and Jake. Since they moved to Eastwood, the Dalton family has been their best friend. From Mr Dalton to Jake. Because they lived so close to each other, they were there within half an hour.

Quite a few cars were already parked in front of the house and you could hear people's laughter in the loud music. They walked to the house with the blue gate and pink flowers. They walked to the front door and then Alex pressed the shrill.

'Jake! I think there's someone at the door. Can you take a look!'

Jake was wearing a black suit and said to his mother, who was holding a tray with glasses of lemonade.

'Why are you shouting like that?'

his mother thought it was a silly question and said: 'Because that music of yours is so loud, of course!'

Jake walked to the front door and almost tripped over his own feet. He cursed for a moment and then unlocked the door.

Alex said:

'Hey man, how are you?'

They shook hands after which Alex walked inside.

'Anna.'

Jake said to Mary and gave her a hug.

'Happy birthday to Lara and Bryan. I knew right away it was you, no one else would swear like that.'

Jake laughed and said:

'Was I that loud? I hope my mum didn't hear me. Your make-up helped hide that bruise for sure. If I didn't know I might never have seen it.'

Jake's mother welcomed them and said: 'If it isn't the two Bradshaw's.'

Mary hugged Mrs Dalton warmly and she said: 'Happy birthday to Lara and Bryan.'

'Thank you girl. Do you know your father called me? He told me to keep him informed if you came by the event.'

Mary asked: 'So, are you going to do that?'

Mrs Dalton smiled and said:

'No, child. Of course not, how are you Alex?'

Alex said:

'Fine, ma'am. I'm just here balking at not putting on a suit, it does look like there's a fancy-dress dinner party here.'

She smiled and said: 'Jake, give him a hand, will you.'

Jake and Alex then went to Jake's room, where Jake gave Alex one of his black suits. Alex said: 'At least this is better than this t-shirt I'm wearing here and those stupid jeans.'

Mary went to the front room where Lara was chatting with some friends. She saw Mary and stood up.

'Happy Birthday Lara.'

Lara said,

'Mary! My friend! Everyone, this is my best friend Mary Bradshaw.'

Mary and Lara hugged and greeted each other like two old friends.

Two of the girls sitting there with dyed pink hair asked,

'And what about us?'

Lara smiled and said:

'I'm sorry girls, but Mary is my best friend.'

'You don't even know her that long!'

shouted another girl.

'I don't care,'

Lara said and sat down on the sofa with Mary.

'How are you, Mary. It's been a long time since we had a proper conversation.'

Mary, Lara and some more of her friends chatted together for a bit and had a good time.

After a while, Alex, Jake and Bryan walked in.

Mary also congratulated Bryan and then went to the toilet for a while.

When she finished, she looked at herself in the mirror for a moment and said:

'This is all right, I'm not doing anything wrong here. calm down, MaryAnna, calm down.' She came out of the toilet and saw Jake leaning against the wall as if he was waiting for her.

Mary said: 'Hey, did you need me?'

Jake smiled slightly and said:

'Yep, come with me.'

Mary thought it was a bit weird, but just went along. They got to Jake's room, where he let her in first. She looked around, his room was messy and all he had were pictures of Lara, Bryan, his parents, Alex, Mirian, herself, him and many other people. Mary did think it was too much, all those pictures it was so crowded, but she said nothing.

'Okay, now what?"

asked Mary. Jake said nothing but knelt down beside his bed and bent under the bed. He pulled out a cardboard box from underneath and said to Mary:

'I know it's your birthday in less than seven months, but I have something for you. I found her in the garage yesterday, I thought maybe you'd like her.'

He opened the box and out of the box came the head of a tiny baby kitten.

The kitten had such an orange-ginger color and beautiful blue eyes just like her. Her fur was so soft and she meowed quietly. Mary gently lifted the creature and petted her.

'She is so cute. I love her.'

Jake said,

'I'm glad you like her. You can keep her. She's for you.'

Mary said: 'Jake, as much as I would like too. My dad would never want to. He was already mad today about that necklace you gave me and now this cutie. You know I wasn't actually supposed to come right?'

Jake nodded and said:

'Then just tell him, you found her in the garden or also in the garage while you were looking for your bike.' Mary smiled and said:

'That might just work. But what do I call her?'

'That's a girl thing, name-finding.'

'Since she's alone, I think I'm going to call her... Solo. Yes, Solo is nice. Solo and Mary.'

Jake said: 'Okay, Solo it is. I'll give you her at the end of the evening then you can take her home. Otherwise she's going to ruin your nice dress now.'

They went back to the front hall where everyone was. Alex noticed them and asked:

'Where were you two?'

Jake said: 'Nowhere friend.'

Mary had another one of the best nights ever especially with Lara.

'And then my little brother came home crying because his stones had fallen into the pond. Poor Jake Milkshake.'

Mary did not stop laughing and she wished this could go on for the rest of the evening.

Alex then came and said:

'Everyone, I'm afraid we have to go now, it's half past nine in half an hour and we have to be home by then.'

Mary felt bad, time goes too fast she thought.

She greeted everyone and then walked out of the long corridor to the outside.

Lara had come with her, her short light brown curls hung beautifully beside her neck, she had turned twenty today. She had almost finished school and would start her own fashion business. Lara gave Mary another hug and pushed a piece of paper into her hand.

'My number.'

Mary said, 'Finally bought your phone? Nice!'

'I had a little help from a friend.'

said Lara and she winked at Mary, Mary couldn't hold back and she said,

'Really, that's so nice, you have to tell me all about him, okay.'

'Okay' said Lara 'I'll call you.'

Mrs Dalton screamed inside, 'I'd like to meet him too.' Lara and Mary yawned.

Jake then came with the box and Solo and he said,

'So, here you go Anna. I hope you're happy.'

Alex asked: 'What's in the box?'

'Not what, but who.'

Mary held the box with one hand and opened it she gently stroked Solo and said:

'This is my new pet, Solo.'

Alex said: 'Serious, a cat. Jake, do you want to kill me? Mary, what about dad?'

Mary said:

'I don't care, bye Lara, thanks milkshake.'

Jake looked at Lara and said:

'Well, thank you very much for that.' and he walked inside, Lara said: 'Don't worry, he'll come around again.'

They then walked home, on the way Mary was petting Solo and playing with her the whole time. Alex just walked on, making sure he looked carefully at the path where they were walking, as it was already quite dark.

'Martha! Where is Anna?'

Mary's mother's name is Martha.

Martha rushed up the stairs and entered Mary's room, she put on her most surprised face and said:

'She's not in her room. I didn't know you were back already, Richard.'

Richard looked at Mary's unmade bed, the open mascara bottle, the messy wardrobe and the blue tonic on her bedside table. Richard turned to Martha and he said:

'I'll ask again, Martha. Where is Anna?'

Martha lied for the second time now:

'I don't know. I swear she was in her room when I last checked and she was sleeping.'

Richard got angry and said:

'Clearly it can be seen now that she is not in the room, what time did you last check?'

Martha lied again and said:

'Half past eight just before I said goodbye to Alex before he went to his friend's party.'

Richard did not buy this lie and said:

'Martha, I don't want you to lie for me.'

He took several steps closer to her until he was only two inches away from her.

'We both know it's not going to be pretty for you if you continue like this anyway. You know what happened last time when we had this conversation.'

Martha got scared and swallowed. She lied again, but this time with full conviction:

'I told her she can hang out in the garage so she doesn't get bored.'

Richard walked away. Martha could hear Richard's heavy footsteps on the stairs and when she was sure he was almost down already, she called Alex.

They were already almost home another three to five minutes. Alex saw the phone call come in and picked up.

'Hey ma, we're almost home already.'

Martha said,

'Mary, Alex run.' and she put down.

Richard wanted to walk out, but Martha had apparently already locked the door and he went into the kitchen to take the key off the hook.

Alex looked at Mary startled and he said,

'Mary, run now!'

Mary started running with the box in her hands.

'Is father home yet?'

Alex said,

'I think so, I heard mum talking so coldly.'

'It's not even 9:30 yet,'

said Mary, who almost tripped.

Alex said:

'Give me that box here.'

And they ran on, they were almost there, but not quite there yet.

Richard opened the door and went to the garage.

He threw it open with a jerk and he smiled viciously.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world),

Hi! I'm here to leave a quick review!!

First Impression: Well this was quite an interesting piece here. I'm already very invested in Mary and Alex here. You did a great job of painting their personalities really quite well. And this makes for quite a nice little start. Plenty of excitement and a nice cliffhanger to end on there too.

Anyway let's get right to it,

Okay it seems we're starting off with a pretty standard little just description of what's to happen here before we dive into what appears to be a relatively intense scene there. Its a bit hard at the moment to fully see exactly what's behind all this but there's certainly hints of seriousness.

Well it seems despite the fact that these two seem pretty young if a headmaster is being mentioned and arguing over something that seems relatively simple, they are absolutely fighting it out with some genuine bad feelings towards each other. That definitely immediately makes this scene that much more intense.

Well yup these two are definitely properly fighting it out and trying to manipulate the situation to their benefit too. This certainly seems to have escalated way beyond even just a simple fight to something personal where they clearly want to actually cause injuries.

Stop it!’

Oh okay, it looks like now we've got two more running into the situation. This is certainly going to make things interesting now, especially seeing how the two are going to react to a pair that does appear to at least recognize them if not exactly be friends or enemies.

Well clearly there's a little bit more to this particular necklace than what we've so far been told and now that's coming to light as it seems the the other two are trying their best to actually diffuse the fight instead of escalating it in any way.

Okayy...well I suppose judging from how that went ultimately Mary was the one who was mean to have the necklace. It was a bit hard to tell in all the tangle from earlier but I suppose given the actual tittle of this piece it does make sense that this would belong to Mary.

'How then?'

Okayy well we're definitely seeing some pretty interesting personality coming to light in all of this. I'm not quite sure how to judge all of them at the moment because they do seem to be a little bit in the old grey section of the spectrum in terms of how justified their little spat earlier was.

Okayy well that suggested some interesting undertones there right away. It looks like maybe there's something to be had with Alex and Jake that we haven't quite seen in its entirety just yet. I love that little detail, makes this little friend group and this necklace that much more interesting.

Hmm okayy well that's one way to showcase quite how their relationship is meant to be like. I think it works pretty seamlessly there while its also immediately pushed aside by another pressing issue coming to light with the whole dad scenario.

Hmm well it looks like they definitely didn't manage to come up with a foolproof excuse in that time which does make sense. Well let's see how this will turn out and if Mary does in fact manages to end up unable to go this party as a result of how this is going to go.

Okay it seems the first situation was sort of dodged there although Mary has now immediately run into her mother. There's no telling how that particular chit chat will go either given that Mary's plan of trying to make herself look presentable before being seen by anyone has clearly failed immediately.

Okayyy it seems the mother situation was handled relatively well. That could certainly have gone a lot worse than it did and for the moment Mary has managed to successfully dodge around her father for a bit. Well, let's see where this will take us.

Well that whole section seems to have gone by pretty nicely there for Mary. It seems at least for the moment Mary has managed to get herself all presentable and start the process of getting a bit more ready to face whatever questions will be coming her way during this particular dinner.

Well it looks like Mary celebrated a little too early there and perhaps her father just wasn't quite paying full attention just yet. Well either that or her mother had something to do with this one.

'Nothing'

she replied calmly and continued eating.

Well it looks like Alex is doing his best there to not end up punished alongside Mary and well it seems Mary really doesn't have much of a choice but to tell the whole truth and it seems she's about to also get in quite a bit of trouble there.

Well that does seem like a pretty solid reasoning there from the father in terms of being quite so paranoid even though yes this is a rather unfair situation to be put into there. Well let's see how this well turn out. It seems even Alex isn't going to be able to escape here.

Well this is definitely about to escalate to a bit of an argument there and given that both of them appear to be having semi valid points to work with in this matter suggests that we're about to see a fairly long little shouting match that's not really going to have a clear person who should be the winner.

Well it looks like the worst did in fact happen after all. I don't think Mary ending up shouting there did too many favors for her there and well its a bit of a sad moment again given how much Mary was quite clearly looking forward to all of that.

'Fine.'

Okay that was handled a lot calmer than I thought it would be. Alex took a little stand but it seems he's not going to go ahead and argue too much and will just in fact head off to the party. Well, let's see exactly how this particular situation will go from there.

Oooh well it looks like Alex here is about to get a little bit rebellious. Oh dear, well let's see how that goes. I have a feeling they just might make it out successfully here but getting back from the party is going to turn out to be the hard part.

Well this taking Mary a lot longer than I thought to process. It seems she really has resigned herself completely to not being able to attend the party and hasn't entertained the thought of it at all.

Well for now it seems things have gone well and Alex is taking a lot more of a risk than I thought he would take given his actions from earlier. Maybe he's just trying not to get into a fight with his father so he can do something like this sneakily without his father getting too suspicious.

OOooh well it looks like Mary is really taking getting ready in a hurry to heart here and not wasting any time at all. Finally we're back to seeing Mary being fully excited and ready for this party here. Let's see how far this gets.

Well that was a nice little moment again, just to reinforce a bit more of them being siblings and the kind of relationship they have. Well let's see how far they actually manage to get here with the actually getting to the party process.

Ooooh that wasn't the most unexpected moment there given how the mother was acting all along but I wasn't expecting the mother to catch them and actively give permission like this. Hmm perhaps with the mother's help they will actually be able to pull this off without getting into further trouble.

Okay well that interaction went pretty smoothly and it seems after that they managed to pretty much make it all the way to the party without any other potential concerns. Well this is quite lovely to see here. Mary is at least going to get to enjoy everything that she was looking forward to. Hopefully the consequences later won't be so bad.

Okayy well it looks the party is certainly in full swing there and things are proceeding fairly normally. Well let's see how this ends up going. So far I think you've done a pretty solid job of just generally setting this scene up here.

Well that welcome has gone pretty well too there by the looks of things. All seems to be fun and games for the moment. This is almost going too well for the moment and now I'm paranoid to see where things might just go wrong.

Oh wow, well that was a crisis which was immediately averted. It seems what I was worried about did in fact happen but instead somehow Mary has everyone on her side at the moment and things are going through without too much extra hassle.

Okayy well it looks like that went pretty smoothly too and now Alex has gone off with his friend Jake while Mary seems to have just run directly to Lara. Once again after that tiny little crisis things are falling into place as just a regular old party would be.

Lara said,

'Mary!

Ooooh that was quite the little moment. Lara seems like quite a true friend there. Just immediately confirming that MAry is in fact the singular best friend is a lovely move there. I think it speaks volumes to quite how much Mary wanted to come here as well.

Okayy well it looks like the first little bit of that party went by really quite well and now Mary is just going into the toilet there to take a little breather and relax from it all. It does seem like she's been enjoying herself so far.

Okayy this is interesting. Well after Mary's little pep talk to herself Jake appears to be having yet another little present for her from the looks of things. There's no way to really confirm but the way Jake is acting at the moment certainly seems to point in that particular direction.

Oooh, okay this is quite the gift there although it does look Mary isn't going to be able to actually take this kitten home with her given she can't exactly just sneak back into the house and have no explanation for this kitten that she just happens to have.

Hmm as smart as that particular excuse is I have a feeling that might lead to a situation where Mary's father isn't going to exactly let her just keep the kitten even if the father does in fact believe that Mary just found it randomly wandering in the garden.

Well that wasn't a suspicious thing to say at all. ALthough well it seems like we have ourselves yet another love moment for Mary and now she's going to have a little kitten to probably remember it by as well.

Hmm well it is great to see that Mary does in fact manage to enjoy the whole party without interruptions although now we come to the really dangerous part of the whole endeavor which is successfully managing to get back without any trouble.

Oooh that was a nice little moment as well. It seems Mary is going to have a little bit more contact with Lara going forward even if situations like not being able to go to the party happen again.

Oh okay, it seems these goodbyes are really bringing a lot of things to life here as they attempt to leave. Well hopefully ALex is going to get on board the lie about the cat team.

Okayy well it seems even though they are returning home at the time their mother suggested, it is still a relatively dark path there and things are a little bit concerning but hopefully those two will manage to make it back alright.

Where is Anna?

Oh dear well it looks like unfortunately despite all of what has gone right in the moment the last hurdle is in fact where its going to fail even thought Mary's mom is absolutely doing everything in her power here despite the odds being against her.

Well the dad definitely seems to be quite scary judging by exactly how that is going. I have a feeling Mary's mom is also going to end up in some sort of trouble from the looks of things. Things are definitely taking a bit of a turn for the worse in this moment.

Well once again Mary's mom is just doing as much as she possibly can to try and solve this situation although I have a feeling this is still not going to be enough unless some sort of small miracle happens.

Well those two definitely are very panicked as they should be given how that phone call went. Oh dear, things are definitely shaping up to end too terribly well from the looks of things. The father coming home early definitely has caused many, many issues for this plan.

'It's not even 9:30 yet,'

said Mary, who almost tripped.

Alex said:

'Give me that box here.'

And they ran on, they were almost there, but not quite there yet.

Richard opened the door and went to the garage.

He threw it open with a jerk and he smiled viciously.

Well that's an ominous note to end on. Quite the cliffhanger and well the fact that the father seems almost happy that potentially has done something wrong her is making this an even scarier situation especially given the threats that the mother also received.

Aaaaand that's it for this one.

Overall: Overall, I think a powerful little opening here. We learn quite about some pretty interesting characters and I think more than enough happens here to make us quite invested in them. I honestly really find myself wanting to check out that second part to see what happens next.

As always remember to take what you think was helpful and forget the rest.

Hello!

RandomTalks here with a short review!

This was an interesting start to the novel! Its funny that you titled the chapter as S1, E1, because with the different scenes shifting into others and the dramatic tone that is evident in almost all of the interactions in the chapter, it did read more like an episode to me. And like any great first episode, it succeeded in hooking me to the story and wanting to find out what happens next.

Narration:

I liked the way you have chosen to narrate this story. The fast pace of the narration really complements the quirkiness of the characters who are just as fast at reacting to the situations. Besides, I got the impression that most of them in the story are teenagers and it reflects in the vague narration of the story which does not really linger on the 'why' or 'how' aspect of it and instead just runs with the flow. At times though, I do wish the characters got more time to introspect since everybody was either just acting or reacting in the story. Everything we know about them comes from actions or dialogues and at times, I found myself wishing that we actually got to hear their thoughts.

Like I mentioned, the story almost read like a script, especially in the scenes where you chose to narrate like this:

Alex twisted his eyes and said:

'You know what I mean.'

Mary lifted her bag and said:

It did break the flow a little for me, so maybe you could try replacing the colons with commas so it fits with the narration of the story and reads more like a conversation taking place naturally than characters delivering their dialogues. Interchanging or infusing the characters' thoughts with their dialogues usually creates gaps in the conversation which often makes them feel more personal and realistic. For example, when Alex says 'You know what I mean', you could tell us what Mary thinks about that before showing us her actual reacting to Alex through dialogue.

Characters:

Something I really liked about the story is how the characters felt alive and realistic from the very moment we got introduced to them. I love the different dynamics you have established here. The brother and sister relationship between Alex and Mary is really sweet. There were countless times in the story where we found Alex looking out for his sister, whether it was about standing up for her to their father or sneaking her out of the house so that she does not miss out on a good experience. His love and affection for her was evident in his actions and it made me smile many times throughout the chapter. However, since it was mostly Mary getting in trouble and Alex getting her out of it, we do not really get to explore or reflect on Mary's side of it, except through the light banter that she shares with her brother sometimes. And since she is the protagonist of the story, I would suggest to make her narration more reflective, so that we can actually get to know her as a person.

Mary's also seems to share an easy relationship with Jake who does go out of his way a couple of times just to make her happy. The scene where he got her that kitten was especially a very sweet moment that made us feel closer to the characters. Mary's relationship with his sister Lara was also another nice aspect, especially since her previous interaction with Gloria had me wondering if she shares a strained relationship with girls in general, maybe because she is generally used to and comfortable with transparent relationships like those which she shares with Jake and Alex. However, my main complaint here would be that we don't really get to see the friendship between Lara and Mary. We are told that they are best friends, but their friendship is never shown to us, except in that short moment before leaving the house when got an exchange between them that reflects the normal intimacy that best friends share.

Coming to Mary's father, I was really conflicted about that entire aspect of his personality that rung warning bells in my head. He seems to be a domineering man and his children, and even his wife seems to be afraid of him. While I could usually attribute that to his terrifying attitude, something did not sit well with me after this interaction.
'We both know it's not going to be pretty for you if you continue like this anyway. You know what happened last time when we had this conversation.'

^ In this moment, it seemed to me as though he was threatening her? And the way she and in fact, the rest of them cower before him seems to suggest something along that line as well. Plus, the fact that instead of trying to reason with her husband, Mary's mother allowed her to sneak away from the house implies that she would rather do that than try to convince him. It makes me wonder what kind of man this person actually is. Especially considering his manic smile at the end, which felt a little sadistic to me, almost as though he was going to enjoy whatever happened next.

Formatting:

There were a few formatting issues running throughout the story. For example, there were times when you didn't capitalize the first letters of sentences. However, it was the lack of punctuation that disrupted the flow of sentences for me. For example:
'Do you want to shout, you're going to wake father.'

There should be a question mark after 'shout' instead of a period and the next part should be a new sentence.

There are actually a couple of run-on sentences in the chapter that make it difficult to follow the story sometimes. However, these are technical issues that can be easily fixed with a little bit of re-reading and editing, so there's no need to worry about that!

Overall, this was a nice introduction of the characters and the story. I am definitely intrigued to find out what happens next!

Keep writing and have a great day!

So that necklace must have been important enough for Gloria and Mary to fight for it. Richard seems to care enough about wanting Mary and Alex to have a good school experience. But then, why would he smile after failing to find Mary in the garage? Guess I’ll have to find out for later chapters/episodes. I hope that the trouble Mary got in is worth it, because she’s on thin ice.

I wish you a beautiful day/night.
