Recently, I read another (gasp) Star Wars book, which was actually a collection of short stories which were previously published in the Star Wars Adventure Journal.
Tales from the New Republic had about 7-9 (can't remember the exact number) short stories in it. For others who have read SW books, you might recognize some of the authors.
The first story was a great one by Timothy Zahn and Michael A. Stackpole. I love both of these writers. This was the best story in the book...and possibly the only one worth mentioning. It takes place a few months before ANH and the main characters are then-Senator Garm Bel Iblis and Hal Horn (Corran Horn's father). I though that this story was really good and also included Ysanne Isard...
The plot was laid out very well and the writing was great, as always with Zahn and Stackpole.
The other stories...I was a little disappointed. One of them (it was pretty short) sounded totally like a Star Wars version of what Edgar Allan Poe would write...very creepy.
For some reason, most, if not all, of these stories didn't actually take place during the New Republic time frame! Some of them were key elements of Star Wars's plot to lead up to the destruction of the Death Star and such. Most of them seemed to be insignificant stories written just for the heck of it.
Overall, this Tales book was my least favorite of all of them.
