Three Little Words

It came out of the blue that day,
The first time those three little words
Were ev'r uttered unto me
By someone other than family.
I should have felt complete, they say,
With rapture should have swelled,
However, once I'd said them back,
I'd lost sight of myself.

Not only did he promise love,
He promised me forever.
He gazed at me expectantly,
His brown eyes made to woe,
My independence faltering,
I leaked: "I love you, too!"

A virgin was I to such depth of love
To which I was not prepared.
Commitment sealed my eyes shut tight,
Too late to be spared.
That feeling that he owned me
Was not to be compared.

He gave me space
So I could fly.
I found I missed him so.
I missed his love, so I returned
As it began to snow.
That's when I saw her with him,
All I needed to know.
