The first thing Megan felt was the cold. It surrounded her, immobilised her. She was sinking fast, and it was all blackness even with her eyes open. The silence was crushing, pounding out all of her thoughts, her need to save Emily, even her will to fight as the water began to take her.
Deep inside her, a power began to awaken, one that Pyrok's human body had never known. Pyrok became alive once more within, though the human body was leaden. The embers were stirred, and the world went up in flames.
Without pausing to think of how she'd summoned her old powers, Megan pushed downward with renewed vigor. The fire saved her from the frigid water, but it wouldn't do anything to help Emily unless she got there in time.
Only a little bit away, Megan saw a drifting form, brown hair flowing around her face. Emily. She pushed towards her and held her, kicking the two of them to the surface. As Megan's fire began to flicker out, they burst out of the ice and into the night air.
Megan lifted Emily onto the dock, climbing up after her and lying very still. She was crying, but the tears froze as soon as they were touched by the bitter wind. Megan turned on her side to see Emily, still unconscious.
Megan closed her eyes again, and her breathing began to slow. Emily groaned, then launched into a coughing fit. Megan sat up, helping Emily into a sitting position as well. The night around them was the same as it had been, unconcerned with the human life at stake.
"Megan... you..." Emily tried to speak, her breathing heavy.
"Shh, it's alright now. I've got you," Megan said, her heart aching for Emily. I wish I had known sooner, she thought. I should've realised. The bathroom. The texts. The long sleeves and pants. I could've helped her. "I'll help you through this, I promise. Gosh, I should've known. I should've known."
Emily's shoulders shuddered, and they were both crying together, shaking and sobbing in the winter air. Emily turned towards her and they embraced, the snow tracing them dark outline against the stark whiteness.
"Megan... you've been so good to me." Emily shook her head, looking out over the lake. Her brown eyes looked so deep, and so impossibly tired at that moment. "I... but... you don't understand. I don't want to live. I can't."
"Em, we can get through this together. I'm sure things aren't as terrible as they seem. We can always find a way."
"No," Emily whispered. "You don't know what it's like. You're so bold, you couldn't possibly know. I thought that through pain, I could feel alive, but then I realised that feeling alive, that being alive isn't all it's made out to be after all. You shouldn't have rescued me. I don't want to live!
"It all started with my mother. It's you she left me on my own in college? It started even before then. She cared for me as minimally as possible, and it was always me cooking dinner, me cleaning the house, me organising the taxes and bills. Singing was the only place I could turn, and she even tried to take that from me.
"I was glad to be free of her. I thought that at college, it would be different. I had been bullied through high school, and it continued into college. Sometimes they bullied me about my religion, sometimes about my quirks and habits, and they knew I was too shy too say anything. They made me give them money. They told me to die, and it took me a long time to realise they were right. Too long. I could've escaped before now."
"My gosh. That's awful Emily! I'm so so sorry for you. But it'll be better now. I'm here. I can help you. Times can be hard. I know you can't really mean it- you see that there are those who love you-"
"I said I don't want to live! They were right, and it's the only thing that's left to me!" she cried, her eyes suddenly wild. She moved away from Megan, rolling off the dock and back into the freezing water.
"Emily!" she screamed, her voice raw. She didn't pay attention to the pounding of feet on the boards of the dock. "No! Emily!" Staggering to her feet, she lunged forward, but someone grabbed her by her waist. Crying, she struggled free herself and go after Emily again.
"Megan, Megan!" a voice shouted. "Meg, it's Thomas. You can't jump back in there. You can't!"
Thomas carefully let go and she fell to her knees, still sobbing. He knelt beside her, holding her shoulders comfortingly.
"Megan, if you go back in there, you're going to freeze. You'll die. I can't lose both of you. It's what she wanted, wasn't it? She wouldn't have been happy, right?" Thomas's voice began to shake, and Megan could tell that he was crying too. She considered the very same questions as Thomas dialled 911. The two of them sat there, broken on the shores of the lake as red light washed over them and sirens split the night.

This. Is. Wow. The chapters may be sort of short, but each one packs a punch. This one especially. Just. omg. I'd actually be quite sad if I weren't hardened to stuff like this ;-; But Emily. No. (If I were writing this, I'd be a whole lot meaner XDD, I commend you for being nice to your characters)
Also, another thing I looooved. They all major in Theatre XD
That made me really feel like I could connect to all this. I'm an actress. I always will be. And seeing another character be the same way (she's almost exactly like me o.o), it just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. ^_^ So, you update this.. what, every week or so? I'm definitely looking forward to the next chapter, do ya mind tagging me when another is posted? <3 tankooo. Love this. I'm not going to nitpick or anything, because this is just a quick thing. So.

I am not happy.
So hello, let us see if I can write decently at this moment. have you ever heard of the comedian Aziz Anasari? In one of his shows he was telling a story in which the phrase, "Why'd the puppies have to die, the puppies didn't do anything!" Well, I feel like Emily is the puppy; Snazzy is right, you're story did need a death. That part was right. But Emily? She was so sweet, so calming, such a big part in my opinion.
Megan is Pyrok, Pyrok is Megan. I actually forgot that in the half-asleep haze I'm in right now.
So things I noticed:
"It's you she left me on my own in college?"
What does this say? I read it over and over and maybe it's just me, but I find it quite confusing.
You killed Emily o-o
Thomas seems a little too robotic in this chapter, to stiff and fake. For some reason, this chapter makes me think of him as Gumby, as a Claymation character. I feel like all his moves are planned out, he just doesn't seem human.
it could just be meOther than those little things, this chapter was heart wrenching and well written.
Howcouldyou, and Keep on Writing :'(
Okay, despite how emotional I am right now, I'll try to give you a decent review. ;-;
Alright, so I know that ole' Tommy is trying to comfort Meg, and make her not dive into the waters again - but the way he does it is kind of, odd... Surely he wouldn't be so "just let her do it, she wanted to die anyway" about it, yet...? I don't know. The way he responded to Emily just seemed off for some reason.
Other Suggestions, Considerations, and Possibly a Rant:
No matter how much it pains me to say this, I thought someone needed to die. To move the plot along, you know? That said, there are some considerations to take in mind when killing off a character. For example, don't just kill them off to make your reader mad - let there be a reason behind it. Whether it be to motivate your MC, or like I said before, to move the plot forward. Which, I think is what you're doing. Just keep in mind Emily's death has to be more for a reason then making Megan sad, and us mad.
and possibly forming and sending a mob of writers at you with pitchforks and torchesAlright, so this is more of a rant than anything, but I'm going to include it anyway. The story of Emily, her broken home, and then her turning to music/something else isn't exactly a unique idea. It's quite overused, actually.... (Though I can't blame you too much, cause I tend to use it as well.) I don't know. I understand writing about suicide and the reasons FOR it can be really hard, since there aren't many. (The only ones I can think of is the broken home, or the tragic death of a loved one...) Like I said, this is more of a rant than anything - and the idea just seems overused to me... ]s]idek[/s]
Last rant, I promise: her rolling back into the waters doesn't seem - reasonable. Believable. I understand that she had to tell Megan about why she was doing all of this, just... I don't know. It bothers me somewhat. If you can think of an, I don't know - better way for it to happen...? Then yeah, that'd be good. Because honestly I just feel so useless in this review, whether it's because the emotional wreck I'm in, or how tired I feel. So, yeah. Sorry about that. ;-;
Anyway, good job, keep writing and all that... *sniffle* (I'm going to go cry in a corner for a while.)

(YOU SEE I WAS SO HEART-BROKEN THAT I MESSED UP AND AWOIHGAOIWEHG) Seriously, good job though.

Hello!
)
Woohoo~ We've made it this far, I can't wait to see what happens next! A fair warning, I haven't read the previous chapters, so forgive me if I get anything wrong when reviewing. Alrighty. So, Megan and Emily. I take it that they were in a frozen lake, for some reason. Maybe they wanted to go for a nightly swim? Who knows? The interaction between the girls seems touchy and warming to the heart (even though they are both frozen
What Megan is thinking should be in italics or something, because of if the reader is reading over this, they can be easily confused as to what is happening. If I may ask, what happened to Emily and why does she want to jump into the water? You probably explain it in previous chapters (which I'll get to sooner or later >.>).
Thomas comes out of nowhere. Like he is just there, chillin then soon as Megan goes to jump into the frozen lake, he comes running down. Maybe he was there already or something. I just feel it was a bit sudden for somebody to be there. Also, who is Thomas?
This sentence seems to be worded awkwardly. Maybe it is the word "leaden" that's just making it awkward? Try reading it in your head.
I don't like Emily's mom. Which is good because I need someone to hate.
Overall, this was yet again an exciting chapter! I really enjoyed the suspense feeling at the end and the interaction between Emily and Megan.
If you like me to go over anything, let me know!
Steggy
Erg, sorry about the italics. Sometimes it just doesn't work, especially when I copy it here from a separate document. I'll see about the leaden sentence, and some of the other stuff does happen in previous chapters! Thank you for the review!!
