Author's Note: Chapter 1 is my best chapter, so I hope it lead people to a dissapointment ((although I'd be flattered if it did. Some people have told me the vocabulary is pedantic, but that is something I will not change as it is my style. Just a note. Without further adieu, here is Perpetual Genesis.
Perpetual Genesis
There’s too many men
Too many people
Making too many problems
And not much love to go round
Cant you see
This is a land of confusion.
This is the world we live in
And these are the hands we’re given
Use them and lets start trying
To make it a place worth living in.
With the lyrics written by Mike Rutherford, the guitarist for the popular eighties band Genesis, in 1986, and sung by the famed Phil Collins; it is a song based on the greed and uncertainty shown during the Post-Cold War Era in America. What makes Land Of Confusion a great and timeless classic is that it applies to the world more than twenty years after its original composition.
Perpetual Genesis – Chapter 1
The blue locks covered the eyes of a sleeping Jeremy. Through Jeremy’s skull the rhythm of the song vibrated, subconsciously altering his heavy breathing to match. Every two seconds his chest would rise, as each palpitation corresponded with the end of a line. A grin etched on the boy’s innocent face, as perverse dreams of superficial pleasures raced through his sleeping mind. He seemed to sink into his bed as he slept, as if it were his personal pool, one that even he could see himself drowning in. His submergence was only stopped by the powerful morning, shining through the window that lay above his head.
With the same dirty grin glistening off his face, he pushed himself from his bed, taking a moment to brush the rebellion from his eyes. Jeremy felt that, the same way an animal’s natural instinct is to protect its land; his physical alterations were a feeble attempt to protect himself. The sun which had saved him had now conquered his room, paralyzing the youth to his own bed. Jeremy couldn’t help but bask in the piercing sun that now wrapped around him.
Jeremy’s bullshit glory was horribly interrupted, however, by the ever-familiar sound of his digital clock which sent piercing vibrations through his skull. The song began to fade as the repetitive squawk of the nearly-broken machine seemed to force out every other sound. Jeremy muttered incomprehensible words to himself as he slammed his rather dainty fist onto the machine which lay, unaffected by his fist, on his night stand. The noises abruptly stopped as he gave a sigh of relief, briefly shutting his eyes.
As Jeremy pulled the blue, cotton bed covers off his legs he exposed his somewhat scrawny physique. His almost disgustingly pale legs stood naked, in their own right, contrasting amazingly with the florescent purple bed sheets he slept on. He lay perfectly still, as the only noticeable movement was the opening of his hazel eyes, and the sun’s paralysis wore off, only to give way to the paralysis caused by the thoughts of outrageous promiscuities, coincidentally involving the very bed on which he lay.
Indulgence dictated Jeremy’s daily life; made clear by the vile, yet acceptable, act of sexual pleasure he subjected himself to daily. For a self-proclaimed outcast any act of sexuality was regarded higher than total abstinence, or at least this is what Jeremy was conditioned to believe by the society around him. With these dubious ideals not in question, he began, within the solitary confines of his room.
Minutes passed, but to a distracted Jeremy those minutes felt like agonizingly quick seconds. To Jeremy, this euphoria he repeatedly exposed himself to left him surprisingly ungratified and greedily desiring a higher degree of ecstasy. Jeremy finished his solo trip through the tunnel of love, and in an act of self-affirmed shame he pulled the blue covers over his now even more excessively disgusting legs.
Jeremy had allowed himself to lay paralyzed yet again, wallowing in a seemingly bottomless pit of disgrace. His eyes opened wide as he marveled in the powerful beauty of the rising sun, shining bright through the modern glass ceiling. He tried to stare at the magnificence of the sun, only to be bested by the powerful object. As the burning sensations caused by this ill-advised act began to set in, he wildly whipped his head away from the view above his room, seemingly disappointed in his self-proclaimed loss.
“Twelve seconds,” Jeremy whispered softly as tears began forming in his eyes. “Damnit, you win again,” he muttered to himself as the tone in his voice darkened. Still turned away from the same sun that had just fed his inferiority complex, he wiped the tears of defeat away from his eyes. Feeling betrayed by a very object that was essential in his admittedly pathetic human existence, he viciously flailed himself off the bed, allowing the ingrained angst of the previous day to flow out.
As the curves on Jeremy’s surprisingly handsome face tightened from the instant stress he subjected himself to, a faint ring could be heard. The grinding of Jeremy’s crooked teeth halted as he released a relaxed sigh. The shockingly energetic music resonating from Jeremy’s black phone froze him, and obliged his adolescent spirit to dissipate, giving way to mature composure.
No longer trembling with adrenaline, Jeremy steadily grabbed his phone and flipped it open. He could hear the indistinct tone in his acquaintance’s, Toby’s, voice, and realized he was excited, but he couldn’t make out why. “Why are you calling me this early, man?” Jeremy vehemently questioned as he yet again brushed his blue streak of hair out of his eyes. He was peeved at the lack of consideration Toby had, despite the fact Jeremy wasn’t busy at the time.
“Dude,” Toby squeaked as the sound of him choking on his own breath could be heard in the background. Toby’s rapid manner of speech made his impediments quite frequent, and it surprised even Jeremy on how his volatile personality didn’t overturn their friendship. “Oh my God I’ll just tell you at school. See you there!” Toby rushed to squeal out of his mouth as he hung up the phone.
Before Jeremy had time to respond, the sound of the dial tone vibrated through his right ear. With an awkward scowl Jeremy slammed his phone shut. Jeremy’s hated when someone he respected would do something useless. He respected Toby as a friend, but he would consistently do little things that would peeve Jeremy in the worst way. However, with animosity lying peacefully in the confines of his psyche, he dressed himself sloppily and stormed out his room, heading towards his bus stop with teenage angst draping his shoulders.
