Chapter 6

Vampire

Secrett fumbled quickly with her keys before opening her apartment door and stumbling in. She looked up at her clock. It read exactly one thirty AM. She had only been a block away from her apartment when she had encountered the vampire at her robots’ graveyard. The only reason she hadn’t gone back was that she had told Athia she would be late and she didn’t want to answer any questions.

She set down her gun on the kitchen table along with her paycheck that she had crammed into her pocket. She went into her kitchen and got the leftover salad from the previous night. She sat down at her table and began eating until there was a flurry of knocking on her door. She grumbled as she got up and hid her gun in her back pocket and opened the door. Athia stood in the doorway smiling. Secret opened the door all the way and Kajios stood next to her. She began closing the door and Athia shoved her foot in before it completely shut.

“What’s your problem?” Athia said opening the door with amazing strength. It wasn’t until the door was all the way open Secrett realized Kajios had helped.

“I don’t have a problem,” Secrett said haughtily.

“Well you never really got to talk to Kajios and I decided that you needed to meet my boyfriend,” Secrett tried to hide her smile and looked at Kajios. She titled her head as she was mesmerized in his dark brown eyes again. Suddenly a faint hissing sound escaped from his mouth. Athia looked over at Kajios and Kajios looked down in the same direction.

“What was that?” Athia asked. Kajios shrugged.

“I’ll go check,” he said. Secrett turned around to go back into her apartment when she felt something slide out of her back pocket. When she turned around Athia held her revolver.

“Give me that,” Secrett snapped.

“Well what’s it for?”

“Rats,” Secrett said sliding it into her back pocket again. “Big rats,” She suddenly caught Kajios looking at her blankly before he stalked off down the hall to find the source of the hissing noise.

“Well goodnight,” Athia said waving and walking after her boyfriend.

~

The three of them, Secrett, Stevie, and Crystal walked through the large garage of vehicles, their voices slightly traveling.

“Crystal where’s Sparrow?” Stevie asked excitedly.

“He’s in the infirmary he’ll be okay,” Crystal said. “I think he wanted to go with you on the mission,” Stevie nodded happily and looked over at Secrett.

“Thunder, how come you haven’t been talk-”

“Crystal are there any vampires on this mission?” Secrett asked.

“Actually I’m glad you reminded me,” Crystal said tying her long blue hair up into a bun on top of her head. “There are and I need you to be careful because they’re good allies. I don’t want you three offending them,”

“There blood writhing leeches,” Stevie said grimly. “Why should they be offended?”

“Yes, but let’s keep that between us,” Crystal said patting Stevie on the head. Stevie shook her away.

“Crystal-”

“Hey guys,” Leith Sparrow said running up to them.

“There he is,” Crystal said. “Introduce yourselves and get going,” she snapped and fell behind as the three of them walked up to the vampire leaning against the motorcycle.

“Hello I’m Stevie,” Stevie said smiling, offering her hand. The vampire stared at it. Leith Sparrow walked up with Secrett right behind him. As soon as Secrett walked up to introduce herself she froze. They stared at each other.

“Kajios,” Secrett breathed.

“I need to talk to you,” he hissed pushing her away from Stevie and Leith Sparrow. Secrett glanced up at his glinting vampire teeth.

“What?” she asked as she turned around to look at him.

“I know you know, so if you tell anyone I’ll kill you,” he said fiercely. Secrett narrowed her eyes.

“You wouldn’t kill me-”

“Don’t talk,” he snapped. “I swear I’ll kill you if you tell.” Secrett looked at the burn scar traveling from his jaw to his shoulder. Kajios pulled his jacket forward to cover it.

“Fine, but if you tell anyone about me then I’ll kill you so fast you won’t see it until hit the ground dead,” Secrett said taking a brave step closer. Kajios didn’t move. “And you have to call me Thunder,”

“Are you guys ready to go?” Leith Sparrow asked driving his motorcycle up.

“Yes,” Kajios said not looking away from Secrett’s eyes.

“Er…” Leith Sparrow mumbled.

“Let’s go,” Secrett said mounting her motorcycle.

“There are only three motorcycles,” Stevie announced. Kajios grinned and walked over to Secrett.

“Move,” he said, still grinning.

“Asshole,” Secrett muttered. Stevie and Leith Sparrow exchanged worried glances. Secrett moved back on the motorcycle and Kajios mounted in front of her. Stevie and Leith Sparrow had gone on ahead.

“You might want to hold on,” Kajios said. Secrett hesitated and then wrapped her arms around his waist. Kajios made the motorcycle accelerate so that they caught up with Stevie and Leith Sparrow in a heartbeat.

“Hey guys we missed you,” Stevie said looking back at them. Secrett was looking at the rapidly moving ground as they sped ahead next to Leith Sparrow.

“Thunder where are we going?” Leith Sparrow asked.

“A warrior’s been taken by the Wicked,” Secrett yelled over the wind. “And we have to go terminate the Wicked’s campground. There’s only a few of them so we can take em’ down pretty easily,”

“Which way do we go?” Kajios asked.

“It’s in the Okra Forest,” Secrett told him. He accelerated again and the motorcycle jerked forward.

~

The group stopped roughly three hundred yards away from the Wickeds’ campsite. They dismounted their motorcycles and began their small journey through the thickly wooded forest.

“Do you know exactly how many Wickeds’ there are?” Kajios asked.

“Five,” Secrett said tying her hair up into a ponytail. Kajios watched her for a moment and then went over to Stevie. Leith Sparrow walked next to Secrett as she led the way down the barely visible trail. Secrett watched for a moment as Kajios flirted with Stevie and frowned.

“What?” Leith Sparrow asked, raising an eyebrow. “You jealous?” Secrett shot a glare at Leith Sparrow, but he just smirked.

“No,”

“You’re blushing,”

“You know I can’t have a family,”

“I never said you had to marry him,” Leith Sparrow said, raising his hands defensively. They walked on until they were told to stop by Kajios.

“What?” Stevie asked.

“Get ready, they’re coming,” he said, sprinting off into the brush. Secrett took out her favored revolver as well as Leith Sparrow and aimed at a rapidly moving figure. Before she could pull the trigger Stevie shot ineptly at a tree. It sent splinters everywhere.

“What the hell are you doing?” Leith Sparrow hissed. “What if you shoot Kajios?”

“Sorry,” she whimpered. Secrett rolled her eyes and frowned.

“Where do you suppose he was going anyway?” she asked stepping forward on the trail. Suddenly a gun’s report sounded off straight ahead.

“Split up,” Secrett muttered. She went straight ahead, Stevie went to the left and Leith Sparrow went to the right.

The earth crunched beneath her swift footing. She got within five feet of the Wickeds’ campsite and watched as Stevie and Leith Sparrow hid behind the thick trees on each side of her.

She crept forward and stopped. She heard the sound of someone walking slowly towards her. Her heart banged wildly against her ribcage. She turned around and before she could react her mouth was covered and she was tackled to the ground beneath the ferns.

“Don’t say anything,” Kajios warned. He was whispering hoarsely. “The warriors inside the tent in the far back. It’s being guarded. I’ve already sent Stevie and Sparrow in to fight the others,”

“Alone?” Secrett whispered pushing Kajios off her. He pulled her back down next to him.

“I think they can handle it. I’ve already got two of them. You just need to get the last one,” Kajios said smiling. Secrett rubbed her face with her hands wearily and got up. She looked down to help Kajios up, but he was already standing next to her.

Secrett ran up into the campsite hiding behind the tents. She tried to calm down her breathing, but the adrenaline was getting to her. She decided to go behind the tents and surprise her foe. She quietly climbed on top of the wood shack tent and looked down. The man had brown hair and was wearing the standard Wicked armor with a purple sash around his waist which meant he was a higher rank. The scary thing was, Wickeds looked like regular humans, just with no soul. They had families, and regular jobs. They even saw movies for a past time. The only difference was that the Wicked was fighting for the wrong cause.

Secrett’s phone rang and the wicked looked up. She jumped down and landed on top of him holding her gun to his temple and froze.

“Boss?” Secrett said confused.

“I knew it,” Cellos said looking at her, glaring at her.

They stared at each other until Leith Sparrow’s voice broke the trance.

“Secrett, we’ve got him, just finish that guy up and come on” Leith Sparrow shouted. Secrett quickly knocked Cellos out with the end of her gun and ran after the group.

Chapter 7

An encounter

Secrett’s alarm clock went off at 4:30 AM the next morning for work. Secrett wasn’t in her bed. Instead she had fallen asleep on the couch in the small living room. She slowly got up and went into her room, picking up the small alarm clock and turned the obnoxious beeping noise off and with an angry curse she threw the clock against the wooden floor. The back of the clock chipped off and the batteries rolled away under the bed.

Secrett sat at the kitchen table with her hands holding her head. She thought of how she would tell Athia that she needed to quit her job. She decided to call her. On the first ring Athia picked up.

“Hello?” she said. It was obvious she had just woken up.

“Hey, it’s me Secrett,”

“Hey. I tried calling you the other day, but you didn’t pick up,”

“I know. I was really busy,”

“So why are you calling now, aren’t you getting ready?”

“Actually, I’m quitting my job,”

“What,” Athia sound desperate. “You’re going to quit and leave me with that crazy guy you call our boss?”

“I guess, yeah…look I’m really sorry, it’s just this place cost a fortune and I need a better profit than what Cellos is giving us,”

“Well what job did you have in mind?” Athia asked.

“I’ll tell you when you get home. If I’m not here I’m running errands for my mom,”

“Again. You’re so busy all the time.”

“Yeah, um bye Athia,”

“Wait,” Athia shrieked. Secrett put her phone back to her ear.

“What,”

“Do want to do a double date,”

“I don’t have a boyfriend,”

“Just ask someone,”

“No thanks,”

“Okay then how about you just come to dinner with me and Kajios. It will just be friends hanging out together. We’ll go for lunch,”

“Well-”

“I’ll pick you up at twelve thirty,” Before Secrett could interject Athia had already hung up. She decided since Athia was so happy, she should be happy for her and deal with it.

~

Secrett walked out into the empty street. No one really lived in this part of the neighborhood and there was seldom any traffic. It was raining, but Secrett didn’t poses an umbrella so she made the long trek up the nine platforms to the restaurant Athia had told her to meet her and Kajios at.

Along the way she wondered if she was properly dressed.

“May I help you?” a waiter asked when she walked into the restaurant.

“Is Athia Noctura here?” Secrett asked.

“At the table booths,” Secrett looked around as she looked for Athia. Everyone was dressed somewhat elegantly. She looked down at her clothes, a t-shirt that barely covered her pierced bellybutton and sopping wet jeans.

“Shit,” she muttered.

“Hey Secrett,” Secrett turned around. Athia stood smiling at her. “We’re over here,” Athia took Secrett to the back booth and slid in next to Kajios. Secrett sat down on the opposite side. Athia was dressed in her usual bright colors, but elegantly. Kajios was dressed in a t-shirt and jeans as well. Secrett relaxed into her chair.

“So how have you guys been?” Athia asked.

“Busy,” Kajios said rubbing the back of his neck, placing his arm around Athia’s shoulders.

“I’m busy too,” Secrett said looking away from them.

“Oh yeah, so what crazy errands did your mom make you go on this time?”

“Oh, you know- food and books,” Secrett said, watching Athia take a bite of the bread.

“Did you girls wanna come to my guitar night at the bar after this?” Kajios asked.

“Sure,” Athia said nodding. Secrett shrugged.

“I guess that would be okay,”

When the food was served Secrett noticed as Athia talked about how their relationship was growing that Kajios wasn’t eating.

“Aren’t you hungry?” she asked.

“I ate before I came,” was all he said. Secrett nodded slowly and stopped eating her half of the sandwich.

“Are you guys ready?” Kajios asked getting up after Athia.

“Yeah,” Athia chirped.

They walked out of the restaurant and rode the tram to the twentieth platform and got off. Secrett followed Athia and Kajios as they walked up the stairs into the bar. It was surprisingly quiet except for the guitarist on the stage. As the girl finished the last chords of her song Kajios disappeared behind a curtain. Athia and Secrett found seats in front of the stage, first row.

“Isn’t he so amazing?” Athia said as Kajios pulled up a stool and sat on it with his guitar in his hands. He adjusted the microphone shorter so that it was in front of his mouth and began to play his song.

Secrett watched him for a moment and then he began to sing. People cheered and whistled. Secrett realized two body guards were placed in front of the stage on either side for security. She had almost forgotten Kajios had been a famous guitarist.

Kajios had been looking at Athia the whole time he sang and played, and then as the song ended he looked at Secrett. Her cheeks flushed red in the dark room and she couldn’t help but smile at him. He smiled back and his dark brown eyes wandered back to Athia. His song ended and the small bar crowd burst into applause. He quickly bowed, the girls clinging to the stage and he walked back behind the curtain in escape.

“Come on,” Athia said. “He told me to meet him behind the alleyway.” Secrett followed her out behind the building where Kajios stood leaning against the wall waiting for them.

“That was great,” Athia said. Kajios reached down and kissed her. His lips curled into a sly smile and Secrett frowned. She knew he was trying to annoy her, but Secrett wasn’t going to fall for it. Or so she thought. There was a feeling of desire that Secrett didn’t understand and she looked down at her muddy shoes.

“I have to go,” Secrett said walking away. Athia pulled away from Kajios regretfully and walked after her.

“Wait, Secrett I’m sorry. I know I told you this was a friend get together so what if we go to my place?” Athia said hooking arms with her.

“No, it’s okay Athia. I’m just tired and I was looking forward to some sleep,”

“Alright. I’ll be late so if you need your book its at my apartment. You know where the key is,” Secrett nodded and Athia hugged her goodnight and turned around towards Kajios.

When they were sure that she was gone they began kissing again.

~

Secrett went to Athia’s apartment first to recover her book. She reached at the top of door and retrieved Athia’s second key. She opened the door and walked in switching the lights on. The main room lit up and Secrett went over to the living room. Her book was on the coffee table underneath a pile of paper and pens. She picked the book up carefully and turned around to open the door when the doorbell rang. Secrett stiffened and quietly walked over to the door and looked through the peephole. Cellos stood looking around at the hallway, waiting patiently.

“Athia are you in there?” Secrett opened the door and Cellos’ eyes widened and then he glared menacingly at her.

“What do you want?” Secrett asked.

“Is Athia here? I need to speak with her,”

“She’s not available at the moment,” Secrett said, closing the door slightly as Cellos tried to look in.

“She’s not here is she,” Cellos said, grinning callously. Secrett reached for her revolver, but Cellos stopped her grabbing her hand.

“What do you think you’re doing,” he said.

“Let go of me,” Secrett brought her other arm up and hit his temple. He covered his face with his hands and Secret pulled out her gun. Cellos stood up. He was a towering seven feet and pushed Secrett back into the room, closing the door behind him.

“Cellos-” Cellos knocked Secrett down and pulled out a knife. He swiftly hit Secrett with the flat of the blade on the head and left her unconscious on the floor.
