Chapter 1: Alyssa

I lifted my aching eyes to the world. The brightness made me flinch. I cried out in pain as the movement of my muscles sent a shot of pain through me. A fat nurse walked in and gasped as she saw my groaning in pain.

“She’s alive!!” The nurse cried out. I glanced my eyes sideways and saw my sister’s sweet face staring down with concern, then delight. Nurses and doctors  rush to see me.  A few of them start to cry. Confused, I try to sit up. I screamed in agony. It felt as if my entire upper body was being torn off. I gave up and collapsed unwillingly in the sheets, still aching and hot tears streaming down my face. Three nurses ran to me and stroked my hair. I painfully opened my mouth a slit.

“Wh-what’s going o-on?” I said through my teeth.

“Oh Lyssie....” My sister’s happy face turned ashen as she started to cry. “It was horrible!” She paused, then continued. “Remember the train ride? We were going to New York on your birthday! We were having a great time. A-and then...”  Rachel paused an started to sob.

I tried to reach over. but the searing pain returned. My sister’s cries subsided and she went on.
“Th-then we were h-hijacked and the train...” Another pause. “IT WENT OFF A CLIFF, LYSSIE!!!”

Stunned, I barely managed to speak. “B-but what about Mom and Dad and Carrie?” I mumbled. “And what happened to me?!?”

Rachel looked at me. “They died.”
“WHAT?!?!??!” I sat straight up, ignoring the unbearable pain that met my head.
“Lyssie please!” My sister started to panic. “Lie down!  They pushed us out to save us! It turns out you smashed your head on a rock. Been in a coma ever since.”

I let myself fall back, taking in the news. My sister sighed.

“I dragged you to a little cave.... It took two whole days without food for police to find us!”

Tears started to run down my face. It hurt to cry. Then the fat lady nurse shooed Rachel away.
“She needs her rest more than your company!” Rachel reluctantly leaves, hugging me painfully. I couldn’t smile, so I just looked at her lovingly. Bye, sister.

I'm also not sure why but even though I normally wear cool tones I have a feeling red would have been my color in the 1860s.
