Drowning, that's what my fear was, and that's what I am doing. No one knows, no one cares. I don't let them see, they won't understand, no one does, I know this because I don't even understand it myself. It's voices, feelings that I can't explain. They burn. They scream. They destroy.
It was summer time in my town, the best time of the year. It was the summer before ninth grade, it was going to be the best summer ever. I had plans with my best friend, my family, and even my loving boyfriend, Brent Conner.
Brent was older then me, not by much though, I had just turned 14 and he was 16, we'd been dating for over a year, I was happy, so was he. We saw each other quite often, since he didn't live far from my house, he simply lived up the road, so we went for walks together. It was our favourite thing to do together.
Today though, we weren't going for a walk together, I wasn't even going to get to seem him today. Today, I was going swimming with my best friend, Kayla, and my family. We were going down to a lake that wasn't far from my home.
"Hurry up, Melli! Your parents said we're leaving in less then five minutes with or without you!" Kayla said outside my bedroom door where I was getting changed into my bathing suit.
Melli was the adorable nickname Kayla had given me, it was short for Melissa, and I called her Kay, when she didn't seem to mind much
"I'm coming, Kay!" I hollered back at her.
I took one last look at myself in the body length mirror. My dark, chocolate brown hair hung down a few inches past my shoulders, and it was pin straight. My icy blue eyes glimmered in the light of the sun coming through my window. My legs were long, since I was 5'8'' tall, if only they were more tan. I wore a two piece bathing suit, but it covered everything, even my stomach, since I wasn't comfortable showing it off. My bathing suit was completely designed with leopard print, and it was brand new.
I grabbed my big, fluffy towel and wrapped it around myself before leaving my room, seeing Kayla. I smiled. She always looked better then me. She was a bit shorter then me, but she was skinnier, and bustier. She had green eyes and bleach blonde, wavy hair. She wore a two piece bathing suit, like me, but hers showed stomach, unlike mine.
"You look great, Melli" she said with a smile. ",but, lets get out to the car before your parents leave us behind" she said before turning down the hallway towards the front door. I followed and we both put on sandals before getting into the car and going to the lake with my parents, older brother, Justin, and grandparents.
I enjoyed swimming, it was a great way to cool off in the summer, but I was always scared of drowning. I had been afraid of it since I was little, so I never went deep into the water, like my bother or Kay, even though they were always telling me to, I never did, I thought about doing it a few times, but the fear is far too strong, and I can't make myself do it.
Today was no exception. They kept trying to get me to go in deeper, but I said no, images of myself going under, never able to come back up, flooded my mind
By the time everyone was ready to leave, we were exhausted. We said goodbye to my grandparents, get in our own car and leave, before we go home, though, we have to drop Kay off at her house so she can go home.
When I was finally home, and in my own bed, it was only 9:30 PM, but I am ready to close my eyes and pass out when the phone rings.
"Mel, its Brent!" my brother calls.
I smile to myself, suddenly wide awake and I rush to get the phone and bring it back to my room before I speak to Brent. I haven't heard his voice in two days, so it will be nice to hear him.
I flop onto my bed before saying; "Brent, I miss you"
I could almost see the grin on his face when he said "Hey, I miss you too."
We talked for awhile about what we had been doing the last few days since we hadn't spoken to each other in those days. He had visited his mom, since his parents were divorced and he lived with his dad.
We made plans to go for a walk in the woods within the next week, neither of us were sure what day it'd be since he was doing yard work for his dad, and I had a lot of family gatherings coming up, but surely we'd make time for each other, we always did.
We said our goodbye's and I love you's, before hanging up. I glanced at the time; it was now close to 11 PM, and I could barely keep my eyes open. I brought the phone back out to the living room before going to my room. I slipped on a pair of purple pajama shorts, and a black tank top before getting into bed and falling asleep to the sound of the crickets outside my window.
The next few days went by like a blur. I spent sometime at my grandparents, had some BBQ's with family, and slept a lot.
I was a hot, Thursday afternoon when Brent called, asking if I wanted to go for a walk with him, up our favourite path and into the woods where a clearing with two giant rocks were, of course, I said yes.
We were going to meet at the entrance of the path, I told my parents where I was going while I put my shoes on, then I left.
I was wearing blue jean shorts, and a light purple shirt. Simple, maybe not that fashionable, but, it was hot outside this time of year, so I didn't care how it looked, and I knew Brent wouldn't care, either.
I was the first one to get to the paths entrance, as usual, I didn't expect anything different from him.
I waited for a few minutes before I could make out his figure coming up the street, and I couldn''t help but grin.
He came up to me and planted a kiss on my lips.
"I missed you" he breathed.
"I missed you too, Brent" I told him back, my breathing pace had picked up.
From there we entwined out fingers and headed up the path towards the clearing.
Brent was taller then me, standing at about 6 feet tall, and he had black hair that was shaggy and hung in his face, though you could still see his eyes which were a killer green, something you couldn't look away from, they were the most attractive part of his appearance. He wasn't overly buff, his legs built for running, his arms and chest toned, but not to an extreme. His skin tan from the yard work he'd been doing for his father over the summer break.
We reached the clearing in the woods, looked up, and grinned at each other.

Your comment was posted, but it wasn’t long enough to count as a review. Reviews need about four complete sentences (at least 250 characters). Try writing another review that explains your thoughts in more detail — the author will appreciate it, and you’ll earn points for it.
It was pretty good. However, it seems as if you were barely describing like five events into one chapter and there wasn't really any set interaction with the characters as an opening. Also, you used a lot of the same words to start each sentence with. Other than that, it seems like you have a lot of potential. It overall was really good!
Hey Midnight! Stella here to review!
Okay so I think that there were good parts and bad parts of this, just as there are with everything! I really liked the whole segment about them going swimming - but then I was kind of expecting something to happen at the lake, and then it didn't, and I didn't really understand how it applied to anything, because you skipped several days ahead to where she and Brent go for the walk.
I'm a big fan of getting the beginning just right, and that's a difficult thing to do. Your first paragraph about drowning was pretty interesting but then after that the second paragraph was a little bit boring. I'm a fan of getting right into the action, having Kayla shout at her and having her check herself in the mirror and go down to the car. Then maybe then you could explain that it's the summer before ninth grade, and how excited she is, etc. And then, perhaps, you could even leave off mentioning Brent until, for instance, she gets teased in the car. And then have the full conversation between them on the page. Remember, what you are doing is telling a story... if you were telling a story to your friends, about something funny that happened in maths class on Wednesday, would you start by "Oh, we went for ice-cream on Sunday, and then went home and watched a movie. So on Wednesday..." No you wouldn't - unless the Sunday story was connected and you needed it to make sense of the Wednesday story! You really want things to flow nicely, not just to be disconnected scenes.
Another thing - you tell us about how she's scared of deep water - that's pretty interesting! But if I were you, I would definitely have focused more on what happened at the lake. How did she feel in the water? I feel it definitely deserves some more attention!
So overall, try and make things flow better, and it'll be so good!
Hope I helped, drop me a note if you need anything!

Hai, midnight, Laure here for a review! So, when I review I break into two parts. The technical part which includes things like spelling and grammar and then, Content which includes the pace of your chapter, your character development and your writing style. Good, let's move.
Spelling:
The comma before the but is not needed, no doubt a careless typo. You forgot the apostrophe in let's.
Once again, watch out for the those apostrophes.
I? I believed you meant it.
You forgot a period after 'you', just remember to punctuate your dialogue.
Same thing here. Missing period after 'Brent.'
Grammar:
WARNING: I'm not a grammar Nazis, so I will only point out the most fundamental of grammar mistakes.
It's is the contraction of it is, so basically you're saying, it is voices. Doesn't make much sense does it? I think what you want here is, there are voices.
The comma there is not needed because the 'and' already has the function of a comma. Is a joining word already so there is no need for the use of a comma there.
Content:
I'm going to be down right blunt here, this chapter wasn't that interesting.
Let me highlight why.
A) Please try and vary your sentence openings and avoid repeating the same words, it is a very typical case of telling and not showing your readers what is going. You might as well as throw us a list of instructions and say, here, read this. Also, do we need to know that she wasn't going on a walk? Is it that important, no. That is already assumed with the latter, that she was going to swim. Basically, overloading your chapter with unnecessary information can be a huge turn-off.
....And that is, one, two, three, four I in one paragraph. You can use conjunctions to link them together and spare the repeating 'i's that sounds like a robot reciting a programme. SHOW don't TELL. Show us how she is excited by the fast beats of her heart, or perhaps the sudden blush on her cheeks.
^Ok, do you see that paragraph. Once again, a very very typical case of telling and info-dumping. Let me tell you why:
You could describe how his black hair was shaggy and hung in? In, doesn't sound quite right a very vague description. So, is the hair floppy and covers his hands or does it get blown by the wind like ribbons of silk? My point is, instead of pointing out everything like a fact sheet. Try and use descriptive language to express what is going on. Ok, his eyes. Righto, they are attractive, why are they attractive? Does they appeal to Mellissa for a certain reason, tell us why but show it.
You told us he isn't overly buff and that his legs were built for running. The word lean or something along those lines could probably gotten you what you wanted, or perhaps it was something more specific? What were his leg like, can you compare? Put it in a simile or metaphor so that it paints a visual image in our minds instead of just telling it to us?
Well, that was...quick. One of the most important aspects of writing believe or not, is actually to describe your surroundings because that actually sets the mood for your story. So, you could probably write what the woods looked like to. And that last sentence was a bit mundane. So all of that just to reach a grin?
Writing style & character:
Your writing style is ok, it needs work yes but I think you have a good pace within the chapter. What you really need to work on, is actually that narrating style that makes your chapter seem like a series of instructions with your use of repeated pronouns and unnecessary sentences. Quite a lot of the content in this chapter was actually quite mundane, we're here to read about something exciting yet all we've got is a girl, who is in love, she has a loving family and.....what? I see no foreshadow, no tension. My point is, the first chapter is extremely important to grasp the readers. If what you write here isn't exactly exciting (even in daily life) then why would they read it?
Your characters are alright for a first chapter, your dialogue isn't half-bad so there's kudos for you. However, you need to go deeper into their personality and show us their personality if you want the characters to be three-dimensional.
I mean, by that short intro at the start about how this is going to be the story about a girl getting raped. That sounds somewhat intriguing, so I will keep reading this if you post it and see if we can work together to make a story out of this potential skeleton.
I must warn you here that this was a very very harsh review of ENTIRELY MY OPINION, someone else might love your story so don't take any offence if I have offended you.
*bows*
