One of my characters is a nine-year-old, but she sounds older. It's hard for me to make her sound younger when she's the hero; any suggestions?

Get obsessive over sentence structure and vocabulary. Make the sentences mostly simple, (subject, verb, object, maybe indirect object) and limit your vocabulary to what you find in a grade-five grammar book. Don't make everything really, childishly simple, but don't make the sentences too complex. Unless you give your MC a background that makes such language possible.
