is to read poetry.

The first time I told somebody that, they stared at me like I was weird. And then they hit me. Yes, hit. Then the smothered me in hugs and told me how awesome that was of me to say that.


Also, I might add, that the best way to revise poetry, is to read it aloud. Most people forget to do that.

But if you've never read it you probably have no idea how to write it, either.

I should say apart from writing poetry, reading.

Ditto. You should read good poetry, bad poetry, and boring poetry. Everything.

You have to be able to comprehend what your reading too.
It''ll help improve the clarity in which you write your own poems.

reading poetry is only generally useful when you can distinguish the good from the bad--and even more so when you can decipher the whys behind this.

That's the first thing I tell any writer when they asked advice: read.
Except, you have to know good from bad, like whence just mentioned.

I love to write poetry, and I'm good at rhyming and imagery, but my rhythm is not so great. Maybe that also explains why I can't dance...no rhythm. Haha.
