Usually thief rings have a head rogue or a leader with some other name. That head takes a cut of everything that gets stolen. All illegal plans must be run by him/her.

They usually have sub-leaders who talk to the lackeys for them.

The lackeys are on call 24/7. They have to show they can make money and are "trustworthy." (We are dealing with thieves here, after all)

There can be other people, sources/associates who aren't part of the group/ring but do business with them. They usually have to prove themselves more often then the lackeys, because they're not part of the group. Usually they have a quality (they can't control. Like them being a noble or not of the right race/ethnicity) that prevents them from becoming a member of the ring.

Check out this crazy story about these thieves that just pulled off the craziest caper I have heard of yet. Maybe you'll get some inspiration?

Additionally, you'll want to have a fence.

A fence is someone who takes the goods that the thieves have stolen and they sell it on the street, taking a cut, and then they give the rest of the money to the thieves.

Unless you're talking about private thieves who are more like mercenaries and steal specific things for people. Crowns, the Mona Lisa, people, etc...

I'm not sure exactly what you want to know, but if you ask specifically, I should be able to help.

Maybe. The black market has been around for a long time, so resale of stolen goods isn't out of the question. I don't know about having a specific person for that, but it is possible.

The way the Mafia works is the person who executed the scheme takes a cut, then "kicks up" the rest to his superior, they take a cut, kick it up and so on, until the boss gets what's left.
