Chapter 2: Danielle
I swear my mom has completely lost it. She’s supposed to be helping me- her mature and eighteen year old daughter-get settled in. Not running around campus trying to find my dorm room advisor, to see that this place was “safe” enough for her daughter.
The hallway was full of students and their parents carrying boxes, bags, and mini fridges? In other words the place was hectic. I was trying to not bump into anybody as I struggled with one of my boxes and guitar case. This wouldn’t be a problem if my father would be willing to spend an extra buck on movers. When I presented my case all I got was: ‘Sweetie, why do you think I’m letting your brother and sister come.’
The dorms in this place were really cool. They fit four people and had a small living area. The downfall of the room was that there was only one bathroom and that I have to share it with three girls I have never met.
While I was walking toward my new room; my brother’s head suddenly pops out of nowhere and I almost fall.
“What the heck, Jake. You scared the living daylights out of me.” I yelled at my sixteen year old brother. He could be such a pain sometimes.
“Sorry, Shorty.” I scowled at his nickname for me. Ever since he hit that stupid growth spurt in ninth grade and got to be six one, and the fact that I’m the shortest in the family, he’s been calling that. Which by the way, I hate.
“Dannie this place is awesome, and the girls here are freaking’ hot.” I rolled my eyes at this comment. My brother’s brain was only able to process three things: food, football, and “hot babes”. How did he get the highest GPA in his class, I will never know.
“Listen, you and Phoebe are here to help carry boxes, not to check out girls. Now move.” I shoved the box I was carrying at him which caused him to stumble backwards and motioned for him to turn around and follow me.
“Speaking of Phoebe. Where is she?” I looked over to my brother and he shrugged. Great, just great.
I opened the door to the dorm and led him inside. I headed over to my room when I heard him whistle. I knew what he had seen.
In the living room there was a flat screen, forty-five inch, flat screen, HD, TV. It was most likely my new roommate’s.
When I first arrived. I had found that someone had already been here, picked where she was going to sleep and left. All I knew about her was that she had a lot of stuff, her bedspread was red, and that she had really good taste in TVs.
“Put the stuff in my room while I try to locate our sister.” He saluted and went to relieve his load. “Be careful those are my CDs.” I yelled at him.
I placed my guitar down and reached into my pocked for my cell phone. I pressed speed dial number three and waited. She picked up on the third ring.
“Hello”
“
Phoebe. Where the fudge sickles are you?”
“Well I was helping mom find your advisor, and then we ran into this cute little sandwich shop on campus. So we called dad, and here we are.”
“You do realize there’s still a bunch of stuff in the car.” I said a little exasperated.
“I know, but we were hungry.” She said in this really annoying, winy tone. I sigh.
“Okay, whatever. I’ll make Jake carry everything” I said and hung up.
That’s when my brother made his entrance and yelled.
“No way am I staying, I’m starving.”
“How did you even know what I was talking about?”
“Phoebe just text me a code 23.” I raise an eyebrow and give him a face that’s meant t o say ‘What?’
“Code twenty-three is when they’re eating and you are going to make stay behind with you to carry heavy items, so I’m out.” I rolled my eyes and watched him leave the room. My brother and sister are the weirdest. They have their own secret language that I can’t even begin to understand and they have been using it against me since the day they were born.
Now back to the problem at hand. How in the world am I supposed to get all this done by myself. I guess I’m going to have to call for reinforcements. I pressed speed dial number one. After the forth ring someone answered.
“Hello.” A deep voice said from the other end.
“Hey, Austin. It’s me Dannie.” I tell him. Austin is my best friend, Emma’s boyfriend. They’ve been together for a year and I got to meet him last summer, when she came to visit from collage. Emma is a year older than me and the only reason we became friends was because she started a band back in the beginning of high school and needed a guitar player. Well anyway she met Austin her first day here and they have been inseparable ever since. This year instead of a dorm she and Austin rented an apartment together.
“Hey Dannie. What’s up?”
“Nothing really. Is Emma there?” I asked him. I really hope she was.
“Yeah, but she’s in the shower. You want to tell me so I can pass on the message.”
“Well the thing is my parents and siblings have abandoned me with the whole moving process thing; so I was wondering if you guys could help.”
“Sure as soon as she’s done we’ll head out.”
“Thank you so much. Bye.”
“Okay, see you soon.”

“Knock, knock.” I turn around and find my best friend standing in my doorway. I run over and give her a lung crushing hug.
“Dannie can’t breathe.”
“Sorry.” I let go of her and we both burst out laughing.
“So, let’s go.” We all head out to the truck and start unloading the rest of my things.

Once we were done unloading we started unpacking all of my stuff.
“God Dannie. I think you brought more books that you did clothes.” I stuck my tongue out at her. I have an obsession with reading. Seriously sometimes I don’t watch TV for a week just to finish some book. I know I have I problem.
We were almost done when my family got back from their “lunch break”.
“Hi Emma. What are you doing here?” My mom asked
“Hi, Mrs. Edwards. Dannie called and said she needed some help. So me and Austin headed over.” My mom smiled at Austin and he gave her a little wave. Mom surveyed the rest of the room.
“Well I see you’re almost done.”
“Yeah we are. Look, not to be rude or anything, but where have you guys been.”
“We met with your advisor and then we were surveying the area. Checking if it was safe.” So while I was here busting my butt unloading they were out touring the university. Without me.
My dad picked up on my waves of hostility, because next thing I now he wrapped me up in a hug and was saying goodbye. That’s when it really hit. I was on my own and I was not going to see my family until Christmas. No matter how annoying and frustrating they have been, I’m really going to miss them.
“Everybody say good bye to Dannie. We have to get going.” When he pulled away I could have sworn there was a tear running down his cheek.
My mom hugged and was crying like a maniac. My sister hugged me and told me I should try out for the cheer leading squad. I almost gagged at the idea. I hugged my brother and kissed him on the cheek. He wiped it off at patted me on the head. I slapped his hand away. My parents and Phoebe said goodbye to Emma and Austin. Jake only said goodbye to Emma, he isn’t very fond of Austin (Jake has had a thing for Emma for as long as I have been friends with her). And then they were gone.
I went over and sat on the couch. “I'm really going to miss them.” Emma sat next to me and put her arm around me. Then Austin came over and crouched down in front of us.
“Look at it this way, Dannie. Now that their gone you can do whatever the hell you want.” I couldn’t help but grin at that. Emma looked down at me and grinned back.
“So what do you want to do with your new found freedom?” She asked me.
“Let's get ice-cream.” I announced getting up from the couch.
“Before dinner? Gosh Dannie you’re a real party animal.
