Not my Own Chapter 1

My mother holds my death sentence in her hands.
I fiddle with the hem of my shirt, awaiting her response, even though I already know what it is. Ella, for she prefers to be called that, finally looks up. Her muddy brown eyes strip away whatever dignity I have. I am weak, a helpless victim in her presence.
"This is not acceptable," Ella enunciates each word. "Eighty- nines are not acceptable, Leila."
A scowl flits across her face when I do not respond. She likes getting a reaction out of me, but I am determined not to give her what she wants.
What kind of mother is she anyway? Treating me worse that the dirt under her four- inch heels? Mothers are supposed to love their daughters, aren’t they?
“How do you expect to get into a good college? A good job? Pathetic. I'm ashamed to call you my daughter.”
Okay, scratch that. Mothers apparently feel they need to rip out their daughters’ throats when they get one measly eighty- nine.
She throws the report card at me. I don’t look at her, but at the floor. I count the cracks in the wood, not wanting to look at Ella’s face. Her anger fills the room, pushing me back against the wall.
"You will do better than this. My child will not get low grades. She will get one hundreds. Every time."
She is using The Voice; the same one that I used to think was scarier than Darth Vader's. Now, when she talks to me like this, I just feel… empty. There is no fear. Just… familiarity. This scene is now a part of our household. All I want is for her to shut up so I can leave. All she wants is for me to die. Probably.
She snaps her long, pale fingers in front of my face. “Leila May! Don’t you dare zone out on me again! Look at me!” If she said that in a ghetto accent, I’d have died of laughter. So yes, I would have not said that again.
“I’m sorry, Ella. I’ll do better next time, I promise.” It is perfectly scripted at this point. It is second nature. I don’t care anymore. If I was still nine, I’d be crying and begging for forgiveness.
Ella nods, but her eyes are still blazing. When my father, Allen, comes home, there will be another fight.
I retreat upstairs, to my room, throwing myself onto the childish pink bed. It is not mine, but the little girl Allen wants me to be.
Ella walks in, and the report card is held between her claws. “Allen is home. Go set the table, sweetie.” Her voice is honeysweet and I want to gag. If Ella thinks I’m going to forgive her, she is out of her mind. If she has one, that is. All she thinks about is herself. “Lelly?” She snaps her fingers. I hate that nickname. She only uses it when she wants something. When I was little, I thought she gave me the nickname because she loved me and I was special. Those days are over.
I want to refuse. But I get up and walk into the dining room.
Allen is there, and he gives me a big smile. “Hey, sweetie! How was your day?”
“Good.” ‘Good’ is a nice, safe reply. I don’t look at him, putting forks on the table. “I got my report card.” Ella was going to tell him sooner or later.
He clucks sympathetically. “Well, that’s too bad.” He doesn’t ask if I got any good grades. Just, “Well, that’s too bad.” He assumed I have failed. No faith whatsoever in his daughter.
Ella descends down the stairs. “Allen,” she kisses him. There is no love in the gesture. Her lipstick leaves a mark on his cheek. It looks wrong, out of place on my buisness man father. Why did he marry an ex- supermodel? Why not his secretary?
Ella looks at me with her cold eyes. “Hurry up.” Her eyes are squinting angrily at me. “I still haven’t forgiven you,” She mouths. Forgiven me? I didn’t do anything! “Allen, honey, about Leila’s grades…” Ella’s arm has snaked around Allen’s neck. In Allen’s eyes, my mother is the sexiest woman alive, and she has him wrapped around her finger. The yelling will begin shortly. It is not fair. Why do I have to suffer? Because Ella thinks she's Queen of the World, and Allen believes her.
I put down the knives and I wish I could stab her.

Firstly, welcome to YWS!
Hmm, is this a prologue? If so, I hope you don't mind me saying, it's not a good one. You don't draw me in at all and I would have preferred if you would have went straight into the story instead of writing this short piece. Please don't take my advice the wrong way but I really think you need to build on this. Good luck!

Hey there, I'm Suzu. Here are my thoughts:

1.)
My mother holds my death sentence in her hands.

[This is a nice hook for a first chapter because it makes the reader want to continue reading to find out why.]

2.)
Her ugly, muddy brown eyes strip away whatever dignity I have.

[I suggest you take out the adjective ugly...it doesn't give a clear picture of her eyes. Ugly how? If you don't want to go into full detail of her eyes, just remove the adjective.]

3.)
"This is not acceptable [comma]" Ella growls. "Eighty- nines are not acceptable, Leila."

[It's a rule that you put a comma before the end quotes if you have a tag line. Ex: "I'm tired," she said. Another thing is to stick with 'said' or 'asked' as much as possible. Tags like 'growl' and 'cried' are not always necessary.]

4.)
I individually count the cracks in the wood.

[Unnecessary adverb]

5.)
She snaps her long, pale fingers in front of my face. “Leila May! Don’t you dare zone out on me again!” she [u]screamed. [/u]

[Here, you don't have to write screamed because you have an exclamation point so the reader knows she's screaming. Also you need to says: "screams." Always make sure to keep your tense the same throughout your prose. Don't switch from present to past.]

6.)
If she said that in a ghetto accent, I’d have died of laughter. So yes, I would not say that again.

[You had a run-on here, but I fixed it. Say what again?]

7.)
I retreat to upstairs to my room, throwing myself onto the childish pink bed. Allen treats me [like] a little girl. A stupid, little, mindless girl.
[Just some other errors]

8.)
Ella descends down the stairs, the picture of elegance.

['Picture of elegance' doesn't say much so give a little more detail.]

Hey Naina, you've given Leila a voice, which is important, but I feel the readers will still feel distant from her. Try putting us into her head more by letting us feel her through the five senses; use stronger verbs and don't rely too much on adjectives and adverbs. Another thing is that you need to try and tighten the conversation between her and her mother. The mother repeats the same line over. Maybe you can have her say something else. Read the conversation out loud and you'll see what I mean. Try to see if you can make it flow better, and sound more natural. As for the story, I feel sorry for your MC, but you're going to need more than for a first chapter because the reader is left with the feeling that Leila just wants to kill her mother (not literally), but that's not the real conflict. Something bigger is going on so you need to find it and expand on that to make this chapter complete. Unless this is just part one? Aside from that, keep writing!

Are you serious? I suggest you do not promote your work in such a rude manner. It's quite unkind to tell someone you liked their work without saying why. And then you have the audacity to scream at her to read your writing. Shame on you. :(

Naina, that was an excellent read! You had me hooked from beginning to end. Bravo on the revision!!!

Just one thing: It should be a period not a comma before the end quotes.
“Allen.” She kisses him.

That was very good! I like the way the mother, an ex supermodel, was portrayed. She's a stepmom, right? Very realitic characters, keep it up!

I really, really like this. I will totally be looking for the rest of it. You are a great writer, but there is only one thing that I want to point out, but it has already been stated.
Since this is the first chapter of the story, I feel it is ok to be a little bit distant to the main character ('cause, ya know, you can't dive right in......yeah...tehe), but just a quick tip is that once you continue the story ( I really hope you do!) that we need to be more..like..best-friendish to the main character. Like, I really think that we need to be able to read the character more, like we need to under stand her thoughts...

All in all, this is a great story.
Continue to be your own best judge!!
Hope to see the rest!

I can really relate to poor Leila. My mother can be like that about my grades.
Seriously though, good story. I liked the first sentence, where you compared the report card to a 'death sentence'. Call me biased, but I usually avoid stories with uninteresting first sentences. So good job on that.

One thing though, when you said:
If she said that in a ghetto accent, I’d have died of laughter. So yes, I would have not said that again.

What does the second sentence mean? Would have not said what again? I might be overlooking something but that bit made me stop and think over it.

I'll be reading the next one now :]
