Sara woke up in the morning feeling confident. She was the most powerful girl in the school, the queen. Her pawns needed to be kept in place, and currently, Nerezza was off her square. For the first time in a week and a half, it was sunny. Perfect, Sara thought. Ashley had suggested confronting her at lunch, when she was outside, and this way, Sara wouldn’t get wet. Lunchtime would be perfect. Nerezza would be in the back of the building, where there were no windows. The only thing that would stop them was the bugs on the soccer field. After she was dressed, Darryl drove her to school.
“Let the games begin,” she murmured as she walked through the doors of the school lobby.
The strain is now so great I can hardly walk. Around every corner lurks another challenge. Now something is amiss in the school. If Saraphina decides that today will be the day she taunts me, it may be her fate. If controlling the weather is too much of a chore for me, controlling myself may not be possible.
Sneaking out of the lunchroom was easy. Sara, Ashley, Mike, Jess, and a few of Sara’s followers, Alyssa and Tom, came as well. Sara was glad Mike still liked her, even just as a friend. Once he saw what a freak Nerezza was, he would forgive her. She longed for his messy black hair and hazel eyes to belong to her again.
Sure enough, Nerezza was under the overhang, even though the sun shone brightly. Sara noted how pale her usually rosy complexion was. It made her unnaturally blue eyes stand out even more. She was facing them as they rounded the corner, as if she knew they were coming. Looking even more closely at her, Sara realized that Nerezza looked sick. Like she was too weak to stand up, not to mention make a comeback.
Perfect, Sara thought. She walked over and sat next to Nerezza. Their shoulders brushed. She’s so cold, Sara thought. Even through her long-sleeved tee, her skin was like ice.
“So, you like sitting alone?” Sara asked. Nerezza nodded cautiously. She was inching away. All Sara needed was a reaction, for her to cry or give up.
“Then I hope you don’t mind if we join you.” Ashley said, sitting on the other side of her.
Sara looked at Nerezza’s face. Instead of fear, she saw annoyance. And something else. Longing, she decided. She misinterpreted it.
“Bet you wish you were popular. Not a freak.” Sara hissed in her ear. No reaction.
“So, why don’t you ever eat? You’re already fat.” Asked Ashley. Mike and the crowd stifled giggles. They knew better than to interrupt. Nerezza closed her eyes, and left them shut too long to be a blink. Still no reaction.
“What are you a mute? Or just an idiot?” Ashley continued. Sara noted that Nerezza was breathing hard, but that wasn’t enough.
Ashley and Sara stood up. “Get up.” Sara commanded. She looked like she was about to pass out, but not from fear, from weakness.
Suddenly, it was dark out. Storm clouds had rolled in over the sun. Thunder boomed in the distance.
“Please…leave…” Nerezza whispered. Her voice wasn’t hurt or sad, simply asking.
“So the mute speaks.” Ashley replied, moving closer.
The thunder was overhead now. Lightning forked the sky. Mike, Jess, Alyssa, and Tom exchanged looks.
Sara looked Nerezza straight in the eye. “We’re not going anywhere.” Everyone slowly formed a half circle around Nerezza, who as pressed against the wall of the school. Sara could see Ashley tensing. Nobody ever lasted this long under their taunts.
Nerezza’s breathing was raspy now, and she shivered even though the day was warm. A light rain began to fall. “Please.” She whispered again.
The rain was pouring now. “Your hair is ugly, too.” Sara added. Nerezza ignored her, glancing the other way.
“Bitch!” Ashley yelled, stepping forward and slapping Nerezza across the face. Then she stepped back, unsure of what to do next, embarrassed for snapping in front of everyone.
Almost a minute went by. Then Nerezza fell to the ground. She twitched, and her eyes rolled.
“Is-is she having a seizure?” Tom wondered.
Then, just as suddenly as she had fallen, she stood. Her face showed complete calm. Then Sara noticed her eyes. They were completely glowing white, as if the pupil and iris had disappeared.
Thunder boomed like a bomb overhead, and Sara smelled something burning. She felt fear. Total, complete fear. Then, some invisible force flew into her, knocking her into the air and far onto the fields. Everyone stood paralyzed.
Nerezza began to glow. Not exactly light, but some sort of energy surrounded her. A wind whipped through Nerezza’s hair and she screamed.
Ashley collapsed, and something gold radiated from her. Then it was in Nerezza’s hands, which were outstretched by her sides. Her eyes closed, and she breathed in deeply.
Ashley did not move again. Nerezza’s eyes fluttered open. The energy around her was unmistakable, and sparks danced from her fingertips. She smiled and waved her right hand, as if she was pushing the remaining standers down. The look in her eye was no longer annoyance or longing, it was hunger.
Mike, Jess Alyssa, and Tom fell. Then gold light danced around them before Nerezza absorbed it. She laughed. A cold hard maniacal laugh that burned its way into Sara’s mind. Nerezza touched each of the bodies surrounding her on the forehead. They each disappeared.
The storm was incredibly strong now. Rain pelted Sara’s face and she watched a power line snap in the wind. The sky was black as night, lit by lightning. Sara ran to where Ashley had been.
“Ashley!” She screamed. “Y-you killed Ashley!” She cried, looking up at Nerezza through her tears. Nerezza smiled.
“Indeed I did. Her soul was quite satisfying if that acts as any consolation.”
“YOU MONSTER!” Sara screamed.
“Not quite.” Came the reply.

.... as you can probably now tell, it would have been weird to cut it off in the middle.
