Chapter 1.
As she was walking up the hill towards the school gate, there they were: her friend, Andrew and her boyfriend, Gary. Both of them were chatting, taking quick glances at her, but it was mainly from her boyfriend, who had shoulder-length, dirty blonde, straight, greasy hair; very light brown eyes with a tint of yellow; pale skin; a large nose and thin lips, wearing a slightly sad expression. He was roughly the same height as her friend, but, unlike him, was thin and quite muscular, hiding his physique behind a dark blue jacket, a baggy black t-shirt and indigo jeans. Her friend wore a dark red hoodie and baggy black jeans with a chain at the side. His black hair shone in the sunlight like a L'oreal advert and he seemed to have an uncomfortable look about him when talking to Gary.
When she saw the two guys, her heart started beating faster; she felt her spirit light up...
It was now to decide: should she go to walk with Gary or Andrew after school today? If she ignored Gary then he would realise that their little bicker at lunchtime was not to be taken lightly. Nothing could be taken lightly these days with him.
A flash from her memory sprang to mind…
'Why did you walk away from me without saying goodbye?' He asked at lunchtime. 'Not even a hug or nothing...'
'God, why are you so picky?' She felt her temper rising. 'I was talking to my friends, if that’s okay with you!'
'It's like you don't even want to be around me.'
'You analyse too much,' she gritted her teeth. 'Can't you just leave it?!'
'It's just...' he continued. 'It's like, I don't mean anything to you.'
'You assume so much, that's what gets you into a mess,' she snapped. She didn't need this.
She turned and walked away in the opposite direction, opening the door to her Art classroom, viewing the welcoming looks from her friends. The one with the messy afro smiled and asked, ‘What’s up?’
Chapter 2.
Andrew trudged along with Sabrina up the hill from the school gates. The sun was blazing upon them in the clear, blue sky; a light, warm breeze waved in their opposite direction, allowing their hair to flow gently with it.
He looked at Sabrina's profile; it seemed almost perfect and smooth, however, her nose was flatter than the upturned end of it- he found it cute. Her slightly olive skin was similar to his darker shade, her full pink lips...big hazel eyes...her long, wavy, soft, brown hair...
'You going skating today?' She interrupted his thoughts.
Andrew quickly snapped back to reality. 'Yeah, so are the others.'
'Cool. What time?'
He scratched his head; his jaw-length, black hair, and lazy curls bounced in time with his footsteps. His small, dark brown eyes looked upwards to briefly think. 'I'll stop by yours, is that okay?' He hoped.
'Aww, that sounds good, thanks!' She beamed. What the hell??! Gary never did that!
'So, why aren't you walking with Gary today?' then he remembered something. 'Aren't you talking to him?'
'He's just being stupid,' She sighed.
How unusual, Andrew thought. Instead he decided to sound concerned. 'Why?'
'Because he brings up silly little things.'
'Oh, well...' how could he sound neutral? 'Sorry?'
'For what?
'I don’t know,' he chuckled nervously.
Sabrina rolled her eyes at that comment. 'It’s okay,' she smiled at him, her pearly-white, straight teeth showing. ‘I’ve been through worse.’
‘…Really?’ He fumed.
‘Yeah.’
'Like what?'
Sabrina thought about it. 'He's over-the-top when he wants to make up with me. Like, he'll take me out on some big date after we fight, when he could just simply say "I'm sorry".'
'Oh..-'
'He doesn't like me hanging 'round with my friends, and don't even think about other guys! He'll just turn into the Green-Eyed Monster!'
Oh my. She couldn't stop, it was rolling off her tongue, things she didn't even realised bothered her. 'He would make me wait for like an hour, when we're going out somewhere on the weekend, telling me he's coming, then after I've left to go somewhere else, he'll text me to say he's going to play football with his mates, CLEARLY knowing that we've planned that day for us! Oh, and he's a flippin' spoilt brat!'
How weird, Andrew thought sarcastically.
'If he hears the word "no" all of a sudden I must hate him. He's bloody selfish. He's so picky about things...everything. Anything else?' She laughed.
‘Whoa.’ Andrew gaped. His fist clenched, but he quickly relaxed it before Sabrina noticed.
‘Maybe I said too much- sorry,’ she blushed.
Andrew sort of panicked. 'No! No, of course not, it’s good you told me.' He looked at her, half-smiling. 'What do you want to do now?'
'I guess...' she thought. 'Maybe I should just break up with him. I’ve been thinking about doing that lately. What do you think?' She looked at him.
What does he think?
'Well, it's up to you, isn't it?' He shrugged.
Oh.
'I think I should,' Sabrina said, thoughtfully. 'I deserve someone better, right?'
'Yeah.' Andrew agreed. Me.
Later that day, Andrew rang Sabrina's doorbell. Her front garden could also be considered perfect: there were beautiful, multicoloured flowers along the sides of the pathway; a clearly marked driveway with a shiny Mercedes sports car proudly resting on the smooth gravel, dazzlingly shining. The outside of her large house had a smooth layer of plastering and cream paint to top it off. Her parents owned a small company; he didn't know which one. Amazingly enough, their fortune hasn't made Sabrina turn into a spoilt brat!
He was waiting for a little while; his "well-used" skateboard (as he liked to call it, but he knew perfectly well that it was collapsing) was propped up next to his side.
The door opened, with Sabrina, in a change of clothes, beaming, 'You ready?'
Andrew smiled, 'Yeah.'
Side by side, they walked together holding their skateboards. Andrew noticed that Sabrina was wearing the oversized hoodie he went with her to buy in Camden Market a few weeks ago, (the Guns n' Roses one, which he got her listening to last year and now one of her favourite bands) and she was wearing a pair of baggy, dark blue jeans, instead of the tight black ones she was wearing earlier. She looks hot, even with her skate clothes on - he wanted to give her a hug so much!
How can Gary be such a idiot to her? How?!
'So,' Andrew piped up. 'Did you talk to Gary?'
'Nah. I'll talk to him later.'
'Do you want me to be there when you do?’
'I don’t mind.'
‘But do you want me to beat him up if he causes you any more grief?’ He asked optimistically. Come on, a nice spark 'round the head will do.
Sabrina snorted. ‘It’s okay. I’ll do it myself.'
'Okay then,' he shrugged, disappointed.
They carried on walking down Sabrina's long and peaceful road. The sun was hiding behind vibrant, luxurious green trees, which were quite densely distributed.
Sabrina’s mind was racing: How am I going to start off the conversation? What will happen afterwards? Would Gary not leave me alone to try and get me back?
They turned the corner, through the park gates.
'Thanks anyway,' she smiled, and gave him a quick hug before rolling off on her skateboard into the skate park, which was now in sight. It was a large, fenced-off area in the huge park, with huge and petite ramps and smooth concrete ground, perfect for skating on.
Andrew strolled in. 'Yo!' He raised his hand.
All of his friends came over with their skateboards. The first to greet Andrew was a rather tall and muscular guy, with jaw-length honey-blonde hair, light, skin with rosy cheeks (he was out of breath) and small, bright green eyes. He wore a dark blue hoodie and black baggy jeans. 'Hey man.'
'You alright, Seb?' Andrew replied. Everyone called Sebastien "Seb", for short.
'You missed the funniest thing, man! Leo tried going down the ramp, 'cause Danielle can do it perfectly and she challenged his skill, and he dropped and rolled all the way down into the bush!!' He cracked up laughing, pointing at Leo picking leaves from his short, dead-straight, auburn hair.
Andrew and Seb were laughing to the point of tears, replied with a middle finger from Leo. He had pale skin with red blotches, a rather large nose, a heart-shaped face, light brown eyes and slightly thin lips. He was very tall, and “chunky” –he likes to think that he is ‘bulky with muscle’ (as he’s said to his friends many times before).
When Sebastien ran off to start mimicking Leo’s fall (rather comically), a few more friends came to greet to Andrew: A guy, the same height as Sebastien, with spiked bright blonde hair and light blue eyes, with a tanned and freckled complexion and a small, snub nose. ‘Hey, Ange,’ he started. ‘You alright?’
‘Yeah, man.’
Then another friend, this time a girl with mid-length, straight, thick brown hair with a heavy fringe covering half of her face, light skin with rosy cheeks and liquid brown eyes –behind thick-rimmed round glasses- ran up to Andrew and gave him a huge hug. ‘Hey!’
‘Hi, Danielle!’ Andrew squeezed back.
She let go of him and skated off to Sabrina, who was attempting an ollie.
The spiky, blonde-haired guy murmured, ‘What’s up with her and Gary, then?’
Andrew asked curiously, ‘What do you mean?’
‘They had an argument at lunch, and then she came to the Art room. I heard some of it.’
Sabrina never mentioned this to me…
‘What were they arguing about?’
‘Oh, you know: Gary being his usual emo self. He was asking her why she didn’t say ‘bye to him after break…I think that’s what it was.’
‘Were you in the Art room, Greg?’
‘Yeah, but I went out to the other classroom to get some more stuff for my work. When I was walking down the corridor, I heard them two. Do you think they’re going to break up?’
Andrew was more than happy to agree, ‘Yes, Greg. She will.’
Gregory smiled. ‘And then you can step in, right?’ He said, nudging Andrew.
‘Shut up about that, man! You know that we’re friends.’
‘Sure,’ Gregory winked, and skated off to the ramps.
Andrew walked off to where his other friend was: smooth brown skin, heavy-lidded, chocolate brown eyes, a large afro, full lips and a flat nose, who was practising his tré flips. ‘Hi, Tony!’
Tony got off his skateboard, smiled when he recognised Andrew and said coolly, ‘You alright? Nearly had it, y’know,’ he sighed light-heartedly.
‘I can’t do that properly yet, I can Ollie now, but not tré flip.’ Then he demonstrated.
Sabrina and Danielle were practising their ollies. Danielle suggested to Sabrina that they should try the ramps, when Sabrina’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen: Gary.
‘Yes?’
‘Look, we need to talk,’ Gary started.
‘I don’t think there’s anything to talk about, to be honest.’
‘There is! How can you say there isn’t? You’ve changed, Sabrina. This isn’t the girl I liked-‘
‘Oh great: I love how you used the past tense to express your thoughts on me. Absolutely marvellous,’ she rolled her eyes and grinned.
Danielle was mouthing ‘Is it him?’
Sabrina nodded; Danielle came closer to try and listen to the conversation.
‘No, no! I didn’t mean that.’
‘Yes you did!’
‘I don’t.’
‘It’s fine anyway: I don’t think we should go out anymore..’
There was a long pause.
‘What?’
‘It’s over.’
There was another pause, a longer one. The girls looked at each other, shrugging.
‘Where are you?’
She raised an eyebrow, almost in pure disgust about his question. ‘Out.’
‘Where, though?’
‘I’m not telling you where I am! I don’t want to see you.’ With that, she proudly hung up and smiled at her best friend.
