I stumbled across this in my computer files. I thought it was alright but I know it needs work.

“Does she realize that her skirt is way to short?” Melanie droned on beside me. Do you realize I don’t really care? I thought in my head. Melanie and I had been best friends since the beginning of our sentence at Wellington Preparatory Academy. She seemed to be getting on my nerves way to much recently and it was only the second week of school. She had been talking about Rebecca who was the only normal one at our school. She came in the morning right before the bell rang and left as soon as school got out and that was that. Melanie and I however fit right in with all the overachievers at WPA. We were both on student council, and in national honors society, national junior classic league, volleyball, cross country and lacrosse. She also played basketball and I did archery. Not only did we have perfect 4.0 GPAs but we had just as perfect boyfriends. Levi was mine and Will was hers. Toned, tan and amazingly hot.
“Hey Kathreen” Will said as he put his arms around Melanie saving me once again. Even he had been getting sick of her lately. She over dramatized everything.
I took the chance to escape and almost made it to my locker before Mr. Lessland asked me to meet him in his office. I put on my best smile as I walked into the stuffy office space. Luke was in there also with the confused face he always had.
“I sure hope I’m not in any trouble” he whispered to me. Luke had a less then perfect record. He didn’t take school very seriously and was very mischievous. He looked so out of place with out his piano or cello in front of him. He was a serious musical prodigy.
“Kathreen and Luke this is Zane and Lacy.” He said it like it was pronounced lazy.
“Hey man, it’s Lace-y” she gave him a cold stare. She was totally not WPA material. Her eyebrow and nose was pierced and her ears were pierced all the way up with bars at the top. Both her and her brother had black hair and piercing blue eyes that seemed like they gazed into your soul.
“First of all I will not tolerate you calling man. Since it is the first day however I will forgive you.” He turned away from Lace-y towards Luke and me. They are transfer students from Ireland. I would like both of you to show them around. They have matching schedules to you so it should be easy. Except math classes will be switched.” Yeah right like Zeke or whatever his name was could not be in honors Calc. It was impossible. Did he even talk? And where were their accents?
~ ~ ~
I tried to talk to Lace-y a couple times but the only response was. “Don’t try to be my friend we come from two totally different worlds. So just leave me alone.” And I did.
After lunch I had Calc. I was so looking forward to getting rid of moody pants. I was way surprised that Zane started up conversation first.
“Sorry if my sister was a pain. She didn’t want to move at all.” He chuckled to himself. “She literally chained her self to this tree we had in our yard so she wouldn’t have to go. She changed her mind after it started to rain.” He smiled. Unlike his sister he had the most extraordinary accent.
“Did you want to move?” I asked.
“Not at first. I really didn’t want to leave my band and all my friends, but I figure that I can get a new one pretty quick. Hopefully.”
“Well Luke plays piano if you’re interested.”
“Don’t worry he told me like a million times.”
“That’s Luke for you. Never misses an opportunity to flaunt his musical abilities. Here’s the room.”
“Aren’t you coming with?” He questioned me and tilted his head. Why was I so attracted to him? I mean really he was totally not my type.
“I will, um, be in soon.” I asked the teacher for a pass and slipped out side behind the janitor’s parking lot to do the one not perfect thing about me. I pulled out my lighter. Don’t ask me how I started because it’s a pretty lame story but it makes me feel dangerous. Every part of my life is impeccable. No one knew about and that’s the way I liked it.
“Well aren’t you a naughty girl.” I jumped about a foot in the air and tried to hide my cigarette behind my back. So much for no one knowing. “I promise I won’t tell as long as you give me one.” He smiled the perfect white smile he had. I handed him one hesitantly.
“You seriously have to keep this a secret, like no joke.” Who did this kid think he was?
“Would you feel better if I told you a secret about me that you could plaster all over the internet if I tell?” I grunted in response.
“Well let’s see here.” He took a minute to think of something in his head. “Oh I have one. You have to swear you won’t laugh.” I nodded knowing that he was probably going to make some joke that I really wasn’t in the mood for.
“We aren’t really from Ireland. Our mom is just dealing with her latest boyfriend problem and had to change her identity so he wouldn’t follow her. She likes making big scenes out of everything. If she breaks her nail she has to go to the doctor and won’t stop crying for a week.” What kind of joke did this kid think he was telling because it wasn’t funny at all.
“That’s not funny and anyway you totally have an accent.” I was way passed annoyed.
“I don’t really care if you believe me. Come over on Saturday and see what you think.”
“Not likely.” I snapped as I walked back into the world of boring kids and even more boring teachers.
“Oh and by the way the accent, I was an exchange student in Ireland. The accent stuck.” He shouted at the back of my head.
I tried not to stare at Zane during class but something about him mesmerized me. His hair covered his eyes and he had snakebites. When he flipped his hair he showed an eyebrow piercing that matched his sister. His ears had little holes through them where he had gauged them out. He caught me staring and stuck his tongue out revealing another piercing. I couldn’t help but stick mine out back at him. Totally not normal behavior for me. What was up with me? I secretly envied their piercings. I had triples on my ears and my belly button was pierced but for my seventeenth birthday I get my nose pierced. My thoughts were interrupted by a piece of paper that flicked me in the nose. How can you get your work done if you’re staring at me the whole class? His writing was just as good as most girls I knew except it still had that boyish touch to it. I could feel myself blushing. Well if you noticed me staring that means you were staring too. I scrawled back to him. I did not except defeat that easily.
The teacher let us go off into independent study time. Zane came strutting over.
“Don’t your eyes hurt from staring?” He asked innocently and tried not to laugh.
“Not as much as I bet yours do.” That made him grin even more. He tossed a flier on my desk before getting yelled at by the teacher to sit down. I looked down at it and then up at him. He pretended to look out the window. It was for some band I had never heard of which meant it was probably his. I have to say the name, Pink Ash, was pretty original. They were playing this Saturday. A part of me really wanted to go and see them play and the other part knew that it was a very bad idea.
The bell rang and I was back to Lace-y and all of her problems. I thought about faking being sick. Speaking of sick where was Levi. This would be the fifth time already this year he had been sick. Was he really sick or was something going on? I wondered as I walked to Chemistry.
Lace-y stared at her notebook drawing weird symbols the whole time. I didn’t understand what they were and before I could ask Ms. Jensen asked me to give an example of some sort of problem. Those symbols bothered my all through class. They seemed familiar. Were they some sort of band symbol or gang sign? I wrote in my planner to ask Zane later if I got the chance. That wasn’t the only weird thing I had seen today though. When Lace-y and I were walking in the halls some guy bumped her books. Her eyes flashed red for a second and then returned to her normal blue. I had to be imagining it, or at least that’s what I kept telling myself.
After chemistry I walked to my locker with Melanie.
“What’s up with that chick? She needs a major style change but I have to admit I am so totally jealous of her hair. Do you think it’s natural? Well it has to be because of her brother’s, but maybe they died it together? Well whatever but does her brother realize that no girl is going to want to kiss him while he is wearing those lip piercing thingys?” I have no idea how she can keep talking like that. It has to be very unhealthy.
“Oh my goodness Will get over here this instant.” She barked at Will who was talking to some of his football friends.
“Yes Melanie?” He replied in his way to casual tone.
“Oh don’t yes Melanie me. Would you mind telling me what went on at Jen’s party on Saturday?” She trapped him in a corner and I could see fear in his eyes.
“We all got a little crazy Hun. Don’t worry though nothing that bad went on.”
“Fine don’t tell me what you did. I have connections and I will find out what happened.” She tossed her hair and quickly walked away to her locker. Will rolled his dark brown eyes and flipped her the bird. This was going to be a very long year. I could tell already.
“Hey can you come in early to help my research for my English project?” I asked him. He was a research genius, and I was certainly not.
“You know how it is Reeny, Melanie always makes me walk in with her to make some grand entrance or something or other. I don’t know but what I do know is its fricken stupid.” He smirked and walked off to his next class.
I hummed as I opened my locker and was surprised to see a note tapped inside.
Hey Kathreen,
Don’t be freaked out that I know your combination or anything alright? Meet me by the janitor’s parking lot during 7th hour. I have a question. You don’t have to come if you don’t want to but it would be rather lovely if you did.
Zane L
There were those strange markings again. What was up with them? I wonder if they’re native Canadian or something. I’ll remember to ask him.
~ ~ ~
“Hey” Zane said as I walked up to him. His sleeves were rolled up and there was a weird symbol on his arm. It was kind of like an angel but not quite.
“I got your note.” Well that was a stupid thing for me to say.
“Oh. Sweet. I’m going to ask you a sort of strange question. If you have no idea what I’m talking about you either don’t remember or you’re not the right person. Are you Alamine?” Wow that was totally out of left field. Alamine? Did he not remember my name was Kathreen?
“Uh, I don’t think so, but hey you never know.” He looked frustrated and discouraged. I felt bad. Who was this Alamine girl anyway?
“Give me your arm.” Whoa say what.
“Um, why?” This was getting a little too weird for me.
“Never mind, it doesn’t matter.”
“Ugh, fine here.” I pushed up my sleeve and revealed my freckled arm. “I’m a natural red head, that’s why I have so many freckles.” I started blushing again. He had a knack for turning my face red. He ignored my comment and grabbed my arm. Then he breathed cold air on my arm revealing a silver marking. The air sent this tingly feeling through my arm and down my spine. After he saw the marking he grinned his million dollar smile.
“Welcome back Alamine.” I was about to ask him a question when Levi pulled up in his brand new Charger.
“Man get your dirty little hands off my girlfriend.” He jumped out of his car. Someone ducked in the back of the car and I couldn’t quite see who it was. I figured it was just John or Ty.
“Sorry dude. No problemo. See you Alamine.” He walked away and Levi ran up to me.
“You okay babe? That kid must be messed up in the head or something to mess with my girl.” He glanced over my shoulder and I turned around just in time to see Stacy Turner run away from his car.
“Would you mind explaining that to me?” So this is why he had been missing so much school. He was chilling with Stacey. Well that’s just completely fine. Two and a half years for nothing. He didn’t answer and I started to walk away.
“I’m sorry babe, its just we weren’t hanging out as much as we used to and it felt like things were coming to an end.” He was scrambling.
“Oh well if you prefer pieces of trash like her more then someone who is actually going somewhere in life then fine I don’t really give a ****.” We both stood there amazed. Little Miss. Perfect Kathreen had never said a swear word before. For some reason it didn’t seem like before. Something had changed and it all happened when Zane came to school. I needed to find him. I had to get answers. I wasn’t comfortable not knowing the truth.
I ran through the halls searching for him. Pushing Melanie aside and unsuccessfully tiring to push Will away.
“I’m so sorry Reen. I swear if I had known I would have told you.”
“Thanks Will but I don’t really have time for this right now. Have you seen Zane?”
“Um, nope don’t think so.” Well that was tons of help
“Okay I’ll talk to you later, alright?”
“Oh sure.” I felt bad for running away from him like that but I needed Zane. Something wasn’t right here. Zane where are you? I thought to myself. Then of course Zane surprised me by replying. Only him.
Oh Melanie, I’m in the room under the stairs. Come and find me. Okay was Zane talking to me or something? Zane? What are you doing? This wasn’t exactly what I had been expecting. Well isn’t that a silly question. I’m waiting for you. What’s taking you so long? I could picture him grinning from ear to ear. He was so dead when I found him. Dead hey? Well let me tell you in advance that I can’t die. He sent through my brain. Ugh, not cool kid. I could hear his laugh. It was a belly laugh one that you could tell was actually real not the fake once that normally ring though the halls. Listen in to what Will is saying about you, I think you’ll like it. Oh so now I can read minds and I still didn’t know who this Alamine girl was. All you have to do is concentrate really hard. Picture him in you mind zone into his thoughts. Yeah right. I will never do such a thing. I lied, I tried focusing on Will. Well well have your heard what he is thinking yet? I almost spoke to him a loud. Shut up Zane. Will’s thoughts were getting clearer but I was getting dizzy. I wonder if she likes me. Ugh Will that’s not cool you need to be there for her. I would have given anything to be Levi. I can’t believe he cheated on her like that. That was totally a jerk move. I would have never done that to her. I started blushing I couldn’t believe that he was thinking that about me. I knew you would like it. Now hurry up and get over her already. I cursed and quickened my pace towards Zane. Lord only knew what he was going to tell me.
