*I'm not sure if this is sci-fi or action, I think it's sort of both*
CHAPTER 1
I stood on the balcony admiring the lovely colors of dawn. It was the kind of sight that made me feel pleasure, one worth seeing. It filled me with an unusual positive energy, made me forget about everything. Well, it was either that, or the last sip of champagne that I had from my glass. Before entering, I threw the glass in the forest, that was right below the balcony, where it surely shattered into a million little pieces.
Inside, the smell of death was lurking in the air. It was an eerie smell, naturally, it made you want to leave. I looked up at Damon who was sitting in the comfortable chair by the fireplace. I walked past the dead bodies on the floor to get to him.
“I think, we’re done here.” I said, as I looked around.
“When there is no life left in a room, it’s obvious we have passed by.” He remarked, absent mindedly as he got up. Damon never liked what we did. Even though, he understood the importance of it, he never actually approved.
We walked towards the Mercedes in silence. He never talked much after we killed a vegetable. He didn’t look at them that way. To him, this was human life we were taking. In my opinion, that was ridiculous.
“There is simply too much violence in this world, Demetra.” He whined as he got in the passenger’s seat. I always drove after a mission like this, even though I was only fifteen. Damon was simply too busy whining about how much violence there was in the world to be bothered to drive. I played along as always.
“True, which is why we must stop it.” I said.
“Two wrongs, don’t make a right.” He muttered. I stared hard, at the road in front of us. We were somewhere in the country, in England. We were travelling to London where we were to leave to our next destination. There we would end up killing more enhanced robots or doing something illegal, along those lines.
I should probably explain.
It all began about fifteen years ago. I was a baby at that time. Dr. Brown was a very talented scientist that helped the world in many ways. He had done a lot more for this world, than any other scientist. He was looked up to. Admired. A role model.
Well, as you’re probably aware, it is in our nature, as humans to want more than what we’ve got. Always. Humans are never satisfied. When Dr. Brown developed his enhancement pills and shots, the world was looking forward to another miracle. The pills promised a lot. They promised to max out every person’s abilities to the end. The wonderful medicine was made available to large parts of the military. Only a few months later, the medicine already showed amazing results. The people that took it, had unimaginable strength and stamina.
It didn’t take much longer after that. The exact purpose of the medicine was revealed. Apart from the other chemicals that the doctor had added to make this medicine offer what it did, it also slowly, I don’t know what word to use, perhaps ‘programmed’ a person’s brain in a way that made that person obey only Dr, Brown. The person became a robot, pretty much, no feelings, no pain, physical or otherwise, just a desire to do what Dr. Brown had said.
Soon, Dr. Brown had an army that no one else had. Soon, he became the most powerful –and dangerous man in the world.
He blackmailed and ordered about the most powerful people in this world, and none of them could do anything but obey him. Nuclear bombs would not have been enough to stop him and his army.
Nothing could ever get in his way, or so everyone thought.
It all happened only six years ago. Dr. Margaret Soul was really talented. In fact, it was probably her and a few other, almost as talented scientists, which were humanity’s only hope. Dr. Soul was familiar with a formula similar to the one used by Dr. Brown. Although, it was by no means as strong, as Dr. Brown’s and of course it did not control other people’s minds, this medicine was strong enough. If a talented person took some of it, that person’s talent became enhanced, of course you had to undergo some training to help the enhancement process even more.
I was nine, when I was adopted by Dr. Soul. Much like my adopted brother, Damon and my adopted sister, Natasha, I had no idea why she would adopt such an old child. Most of us, that were no longer babies or toddlers, were taken in by the occasional foster home, every once in a blue moon. It looked odd to Damon, who was then 11 and Natasha who was thirteen and even me- the youngest one there, to be adopted.
When it was explained to us, that we were here, because we had proved talented and we could help save the world, all of us felt proud. That was because, for so many years we’d lived alone, we were rejected by everyone and then suddenly someone shows up and not only wants us but genuinely needs us, what we had to offer. It felt good, to know that finally we were accepted and we could belong somewhere.
My talent was a little bit different from everyone else’s, though. For reasons still unknown to humanity, I was born with the strange ability to make anyone around me feel uneasy and get horrible headaches. Some people call this a form of vampirism. I’m not sure if that’s it, because I’ve heard vampires, well at least the people that claim to be vampires, have strange cravings. I haven’t got any strange cravings at all. So far.
Anyway, once enhanced, and with the proper training, my talent became something that humanity had never witnessed. All it took, was one look from me and I killed people. Okay, I am exaggerating a little there. It takes more than one look to kill someone, it actually takes a lot of concentration and time, which is something most of us don’t have, during a battle. However with one look, I could easily make someone feel immense pain out of nowhere. The confusion and pain, then makes them easier to eliminate, a job done by my partner and adoptive brother, Damon.
It is up to us, to do this. Before, it was just a job, it wasn’t as personal as it is now. However, when Dr. Brown discovered Dr. Soul and the other doctors, he killed them. He wanted to get to us, to their creations, but he couldn’t. We had people, other than the doctors, that fought with their own talents, and that helped us out whenever they could. They hid us, all of us, enhanced fighters so we could destroy Dr. Brown. Which is what we’ve been trying to do, for a long time.
This was the reason why I was driving a Mercedes to London.
There was an uncomfortable silence that had settled in the car. Not something I appreciated, I was fighting my whole body to not fall asleep. I glanced at Damon, he was not asleep, but he was hardly awake either. He was just staring at something that wasn’t really there. Probably still sulking about all that “lost life”.
The sudden ring of my phone, startled us both.
“Make yourself useful and pick it up, Damon.” I said, annoyed as I concentrated on the road. I liked to try not to break the few rules that I didn’t have to.
Damon glared at me but picked up the phone.
“Hey Natasha.” So it was Natasha, our spy reporting straight from Dr.Brown’s. “We’re in England at the moment. No… hah I wish, no we’re on a mission. Yeah? You headin’ there? Well we were going there anyway, right okay, see you soon.” He hung up.
“So Natasha, apparently has some interesting news for us, when we get to the headquarters…and when she gets there. She’s called a meeting.” He said.
I nodded. The car was filled with the same kind of uncomfortable silence that it had been a moment ago. This was kk illing me. I looked down at the stereo and pressed play. Wow, whoever owned this Mercedes was really into old music- I thought as I listened to Abba’s “Mamma Mia”. It was a good song, despite it being old. Damon didn’t even notice that the stereo was blasting. Sometimes I wonder if he’s all there, if you know what I mean. Like, now, he seemed to be in a completely different world.
