For me it was
1. Don't plan ahead. Planning for nano just makes you panic when your characters take over your plot and run amuk with it.
2. Don't think "Oh, its okay if I slack off today, I'll catch up tomorrow." Its always better to think "If I get ahead today maybe I can slack off tomorrow."
3. Don't stress too much over the silly plot holes. Either you fill them or you don't; that's what NaNoEdMo is for!
4. Pick a writing room with a lock, promtly lock yourself in and threaten anyone who interferes with death by spork.
5. Carry a notebook (or your laptop, you lucky ones) with you EVERYWHERE! You never know when an idea will hit you. =]
6. Characters getting in silly, unneccesary fights is a good way to boost your wordcount. Siblings are very useful characters to have for this.
Are there ever times you wonder what on earth you're doing?
You can see yourself doing things that you know are wrong.
You tell yourself to stop, hear yourself screaming within your own mind.
Yet you plow through, leaving destruction in your wake..
