The boy stood in his room, gun in hand, trembling just slightly. Light from his windows were filtered through navy blue curtains, making the room appear as if it were twilight. His room was modest. A desk for his studies, a bed, dresser, computer, and a guitar he picked up some years ago but never seemed to get around to playing. The boy took a deep breath and clicked open the cylinder of the revolver and peered through the six empty holes for a moment. He systematically reached into his pocket and clutched a fist full of bullets and loaded each round into the cylinder.
Snapping the cylinder shut, Elliott gazed down at the weapon he wielded. There were no tears now. No more fears. This is what he believed he wanted, what he was preparing to do for weeks on end. “This is my way out.” He whispered to himself.
Trying to relax himself, he took another deep breath and pulled back the hammer of his revolver until it locked into position. He lifted the heavy gun and aimed it at his own temple. He took a step and turned his body to face the mirror in his room. He barely recognized the teenager that stared back at him. He couldn’t even keep eye contact with him.
He closed his eyes. “This is it,” he told himself.
And by a miracle of fate, or perhaps a chance of luck, a cell phone rang. Startled, Elliott jumped and almost fell over, dropping the gun on to the floor. After a moment, he realized the ring was his own. He weighed his options and decided to answer the call.
“H-hello?” the boy answered tentatively.
“Elliott, its Jason,” the voice on the phone replied.
“Hey Jase,” Elliott said, now with a somber tone.
“Hey man, are you all right. You don’t sound very good.”
“I’m gonna…I’m gonna do it.”
“Do what? What are you talking about?” Jason said concerned.
“I’m going to kill myself.” Elliott confessed to his best friend.
“What? No! You can’t, I mean, don’t! Please, just give me five minutes, I’ll be right there.”
Elliott paused for a moment. “A-alright.”
“Please Elliott, I’ll be there soon.”
“Okay.” Elliott whispered.
Elliott sat down on his bed with his hands on his lap and sat in silence for a while. He thought about what Jason would say, and what he would say in return.
Jason had been Elliott’s best friend for the span of his memory, he couldn’t pinpoint the moment Jason entered his life if he tried. Neighbors down the street, students at the same schools, they experienced life together, and for the first time, death.
Elliott heard the front door of his home brusquely open and close when Jason entered. Soon after Jason slung open the door to his room.
“Elliott!” Jason called in relief.
Elliott looked up, but couldn’t make eye contact.
“Elliott, why are you doing this?”
Elliott took another deep breath, slowly exhaling. “I’m just tired, exhausted.”
“What do you mean?” Jason slowly walked towards Elliott and sat on the bed next to him, his head turned to look at him.
“I’m tired of the world demanding so much out of me, and never seeming to give anything in return. I’m tired of the pressure from everyone for me to live up to their standards. There’s no time left in my life for me anymore. I don’t want this anymore.”
“Elliott, life is hard, it’s unfair. Hell, it sucks at times, but what you need to do is hold on to the things that you love, and keep it there. Elliott, that’s what I’m doing right now.”
Elliott turned his head and looked at Jason for the first time since he got there. “Jason,” he said “I’m so sorry.”
Elliott began to weep.
“Elliott, it’s alright.” Jason said as he began to cry himself.
Jason put his arm around Elliott and hugged him.
When they both finally regained their composure they both sat in silence for a while. Jason stared at the gun on the floor. “Where the hell did you get that thing anyways?” he asked, finally breaking the silence.
“My dad used to be a cop,” Elliott answered, his voice cracking just a little.
Jason kicked away the revolver and they both watched as it slid across the room. Elliott turned and looked at Jason. “You mind if I crash at your place tonight?” he asked.
“Of course, that’d probably be better. Where’re your parents at?”
“They’re out of town.”
“Alright, let’s get some things and head over to my place.”
