Chapter 1
Crispian lay on the hard ground, barely conscious. He had no idea where he was; his memory had been failing him until about a week before this point. He tried to heave himself onto his feet, but a rough hand forced him back. He knew that hand. That hand had helped him as a page, when he had fallen from a horse and broken a wrist.
"Laurence," he croaked, addressing the castle healer, "where are we? What's going on?"
"Don't speak, boy. We're in the middle of the woods, and the last thing you need is to loose energy speaking." He paused "There was a battle three days ago. You were hit hard in the head whilst trying to save your master. We thought you were dead. I just was able to save you from being tossed in the river."
"Where is Sir Lennon?" asked Cris, speaking of his new master. Laurence bowed his head "He is all right, isn't he?" Crispian's voice now had an edge of fear to it .
"I'm sorry, Cris. They killed him."
Cris buried his head in his hands. Sir Lennon had been one of the only people to show him kindness in a long while. And he had only been his squire for a few short months.
"Here, eat this," offered Laurence, handing Cris a bowl of gruel. Cris accepted halfheartedly, sorrowful over the tidings. The gruel was horrible, but Crispian knew it was the best Laurence could give him with the limited food supply, and did not complain.
"How many were killed?" asked Cris when he finished the gruel.
"We didn't count. Of our number, five."
"Who?"
"Well, your Sir Lennon." Laurence began to count on his fingers, "Sir Hans, Squire Cade, Sir Samuel, and," Laurence's face fell "King Jacob."
