The Doomsday Clock (Left For Dead Storybook)

Seattle, Washington, USA.

Three weeks after the first infection of the ‘Green’s Virus’ has set off a pandemic, causing the whole world to be overrun by ‘the Infected’. Ongoing operations from CEDA have seen to the evacuation of all survivors, all over the United States. However, in Seattle, the rescue teams from CEDA have been commanded by the military to move efforts to the southern states; a new programme has been set in place. The military plans to test the Neutron Bomb for a pilot operation that the rest of the globe will follow to eliminate all Infected. Due to the sudden halt in the evacuation of surviving citizens, groups have been left to their impending dooms, either to the vicious and overwhelming numbers of the Infected or to the eventual launch of the Neutron Bomb.

However, one group refuses to lose, refuses to die, refuses to accept their fates. They begin a race against time to escape the state safely, avoiding the evolving Infected and all the dangers that come with a land without crime and punishment. Will they succeed in their endeavours, or will they be vaporised along with the undead?

This is a ‘Left 4 Dead’ storybook, but is set in Washington, rather than Georgia. For those who have never played left for dead, the survivors are people called ‘carriers’, who basically carry the Green’s Virus, but are not affected by it at all. Because of this, the Infected bypass the instinct to convert their victims, and just aim to kill. The biology of these ‘Infected’ is displayed on this webpage:

Name: Jason Hartley

Personality: Jason is very determined, strong willed man, fixed on survival. Jason has a ‘nobody gets left behind policy’, and will stick to this until the end. He is suspicious of survivors who are not in his group, probably resulting in acts of spontaneous offense or hostility. Hartley never loses his cool when facing Infected, he only gets mad with other people. Because of his kind and caring nature, Jason will often put himself in the way of danger.
Strengths and weaknesses: As mentioned, Jason will act very unpredictably towards survivors who are not in his group, leading to many conflicts with those who can help. He has astonishing initiative and is good at thinking up improvised plans quickly, he wrestled in secondary school too, putting him in very good physical condition. He was not very experienced around firearms, but that all changed when the apocalypse came.

Strengths and weaknesses: Is fairly strong and mentally sturdy; he will not crumble into a broken emotional heap. Quick thinking and responsible, Jason will rarely manouver the team into danger.


History: Before the apocalypse, Jason Hartley was the average ‘guy next door’: good-natured, charismatic and kind. He lived in harmony with his two young children and wife, Miranda, until the Green’s Virus outbreak came. Jason attempted to get to the evacuation centre with his family, but he was cut short by the withdrawal of the operation. As they left the centre his wife began to act weird, and violently attacked Jason and his children. Horrified that his family was infected, Jason ran as far as he could, before passing out in a back alley. He awoke to see the eyes of a fellow survivor, and he pledged that he would escape the state of D.C, not for him, but for his family.

Other: Up for love? His wife just died, so no.

Name: Hernan Cuchillo

Appearance: Battered and pockmarked old Columbian.

Personality: Hernan is a pessimistic, disloyal and dishonourable man, rarely trusted by the survivors he met- and with good reason. A Columbian drug runner and cartel enforcer, he has spent his life killing, maiming and raping, and is ready- perhaps even eager- to put his skills to good use against the hordes of undead.

I'd like to make clear, Hernan has no interest in applying his 'rape tactics' to any zombies.

Strengths and weaknesses: Hernan is as mean as they come- while he is almost completely unmoved by the sight of a walking corpse, this does mean that he will readily leave his fellow survivors to die if it benefits him in any way. On top of this, Hernan's pessimism will likely bring down the group, as will his ongoing obsession with some less-than-healthy chemicals.
History: The typical ugly brute, Hernan was on a drug run into the states as a cartel enforcer when the outbreak struck. Stranded in DC, he quickly sought out other survivors to backstab for their money. Upon realising that the situation was far worse than he had first realised, Hernan located a new group with whom he could survive until, ideally, he could return to Columbia.
Other: Hernan favours the 'personal touch' with his victims, and treats the undead no different. He favours the machete, but will gladly rip into the hordes with an SMG or some improvised explosives given half a chance.

Personality: Like Jason, John has a 'nobody gets behind' policy. As a veteran of the Afghanistan war John has learnt to stay silent except when something needs saying. He is a honest man with good morals and will go out of his way to help fellow survivors even at risk to himself. Used to being a peace-keeper in war he will try to do the same when there is conflict in a survivor group.

Strengths and weaknesses: John has a great knowledge of firearms, ranging from maintenance to optimal range. He can,if so wished, be used to train survivors into being able to weapons fluently. He will try to keep the survivor's morale up, even in the face of impossible odds. His good nature can also be his downfall as he will try,if someone's missing, to go out and find the missing survivor(s).

History: As a soldier fighting in Afghan, he learnt all that he needed to about firearms and how to use them. When his squad was under attack by Taliban insurgents his squad leader was killed and, through luck or determination, assumed control of his squad and led his team-mates out of hostile territory. For this he received the Victoria's Cross. He was shot in the arm, while on patrol, and was sent back home. Thanks to the money he had earned while fighting, he decided to move to America. He settled in nicely and fell in love with an american girl. When the green's virus was announced he tried to get his loved one out of DC but instead saw her devoured by the infected. He shot them down but she died in his arms. Ridden with guilt, he vowed to never let anyone else die who was with him.

Favourite Weapon: As a soldier he has become acquainted with all weapons but automatic rifles still stand out for him.
