We are warriors.
We sell flesh because we can, and
It burns to keep it to ourselves. So instead, we sell to
Each other.
Combined, we are thirty-six,
But alone, we are zero.
Hello, world.
**
The world has bid us both
A hand in secrecy,
And we have accepted. The first
Time hurts as much for me as it does for him
Because there is nothing delving in but fear.
“I’m sorry,” he repeats when it’s done. He cries and I
Cry, and then we forget.
**
Forgetting is an art
And sometimes its strokes are easier
Said then done.
There is a face I see every night
And without stopping, the lips utter the
Same words.
“Do you really understand?”
**
“I understand,” he claims one day
When a blurry picture
Makes me choke and whine and become
Everything I’ve ever hated.
“You loved him, didn’t you?” he asks.
We know nothing about each other
Except for flesh
But when I start pulling my hair out
The answer becomes clear.
**
It’s clear that I know nothing,
And I am Socratic in that way.
Memories, now.
Hello, goodbye.
Messy hair, crinkling eyes,
Airless and breathless,
But are they the same?
They must be, just as
He must have called me Moe.
**
“Why can’t I call you Moe?” he asks
one day, and the answer evades
me for only a minute.
Then, its memories again.
Goodbye, goodbye.
Messy hair, crinking eyes,
Airless and breathless are the same,
Just as the two of us were.
He was the only one to call me Moe,
Just as he was the only one to delve in
Without any fear.
We were warriors not because we sold flesh,
But because we gave it only to each other.
There is one answer.
“Because,” I say. “I loved him.”
