I think Guy Fawkes is entirely the wrong figurehead for Anonymous. He actually fought for the re-establishment of the Catholic Church as a government institution. He was against separation of church and state. That said, his likeness does make for a cool and edgy mask.
Remember, remember indeed.

That meme is making fun of him and his failed attempt, so by extension...people like Guy Fawkes are being mocked. The masks themselves are just a way of creating anonymity.

That makes a whole lot more sense. But given the subtlety of the intended mockery, you have to wonder, do people really get it?

Really it's just because they love the movie V for Vendetta...
