What came first?

Your passion for writing, or your addiction to reading?

I think I first began to write stories, poems, and then I became a bookworm. Rather strange, eh? Most people like to read a lot, and after reading a lot of books they come up with ideas and start to write. I, on the contrary.

Ooh, interesting question. I believe I loved reading before started writing, though I did like to make up stories from an early age, so I doubt there was much gap between the two. I used to go to the library every Saturday and take out about ten books at a time. I don't read so much any more though - I probably write a bit more than I read. Though I am trying to rectify this.

My mother used to fairy tales from giant picture book when I was little.
And once I learned a few motor skills, I started to draw similar pictures and tell 'my stories' to my mother.

The whole reading/writing came years later.

Now, I read waay more than I write. It's always been that way for a few years now.

I started writing poetry first, and I was writing stories in kindergarten. My addiction to reading didn't come until I was much older and had already written a fair share of stories and poems (now lost, alas).

I think what drove me was an incredible desire to write stories I could understand in French. I've never done well with French reading, and I still don't that well. Only when I started understanding English did an interest in reading even spark.

I started with reading. I was obsessed with reading as a kid. Then, at some point, I picked up writing as well. I always thought up my own stories in my head, but didn't transition to writing them down until high school. I still love to read, but don't have as much time for reading that's not for school.

Obviously, the chicken came from evolution, but hatched out of an egg. But the egg was there first, then the chicken started developing within it. Oh, wrong question...

I always had stories and plot ideas running through my head, but I never wrote them down. But I read from a young age and all the way till I was 12 (and onwards,) that`s when I first wrote. Christopher Palonli inspired me, my reasoning was that that if he could write such an amazing book as Eragon at such a young age, then surely I will be able to.

I joined YWS at twelve as Mazzi then left because I wasn`t really writing at all. Now I`ve made a comeback as LIon! (Hopefully with better results! )

I honestly don't know. I still remember the day the teacher told us that people who wrote books were called authors. But I can't ever remember not wanting to be one.

Reading came first, for me. My addiction to poetry came from days and days of reading Dr Seuss non-stop. I would read all the time, before I knew I could even hope to write - by third grade, I was reading every book I could get my hands on. Now, in tenth grade, I have a personal library of about two hundred books, and it's still expanding - it's more of a pain to find the book I'm looking for than to go to the library!

Writing didn't really come until middle school, when my English teacher (one teacher, three years) insisted I would make an awesome writer. I started with poetry in seventh grade, mostly; in sixth grade I tried and gave up with stories, and in eighth grade my writing started to evolve drastically. It's still not at I-would-let-tonnes-of-people-read-this status, and it probably never will be, but my reading has definitely influenced my writing...

I digress. Reading first. I love words and I love language, and that love started with reading.

Definitely reading for me. I maintain that I could read before I started primary school, because I remember following the words when my mum read me stories. But that could have been after I started primary school too. Anyway. I read my first novel- The Magic Finger, by Roald Dahl, when I was six and I figure that writing came about a year later. The earliest record of my writing I have is the infamous Emergencey Bike Spys. I think that diary was the first place where I started to write stories and think of characters, and that's when I was seven. So for me, definitely reading first.

This is going to sound weird but, yeah, writing did for me.

Now, I can't quite say that wholeheartedly, of course, as much as I would like to. It came after I first read Airborn by Kenneth Oppel. Now, I hated reading. I hated the very idea of spending time on a book. There was nothing I wanted to do more than to throw books out windows or prop tables up on them rather than actually reading them.

I red Airborn (surprisingly) only because it was apart of a program that everyone was doing in my elementary school called 'Red Maple reading'. We had to read a certain amount of books then we would get to vote over which was the best and get a free day out of school. I wanted to get that day so I was adamant on finishing a book to do so.

I ended up picking Airborn and I read it quite quickly. One of the first novels I had actually ever finished up till that point. Shortly after that, I started writing, and writing, and writing. My grades went up as well as my vocabulary. Because of writing, I started reading anything and everything I could get my hands on (first being my older sisters Anne Rice collection, then shortly followed by ever classic in the walker household), but none of that would have happened if it wasn't for writing.

I guess, if it wasn't for Airborn, I wouldn't have ever started writing, but at the same time, a vast part of my love of literature came from my love of writing ^_^.

Reading... I think that goes for most people though, since most people learn to read before really being good at writing.
But I remember being like four or five and taking just HUGE stacks of books into my room at "nap time" - mostly Berenstein Bears, Frances (the badger), or Little Critter... stuff like that. And then I'd read them all.
I don't know if this was weird, but I was reading 300 page books in a week in grade 3, mostly Redwall. So I've always loved reading.

I've always made up stories, yes, but I didn't start writing them down until I was well through my book obsession.

So yeah, books came first. Plus, my Mom always read to me when I was like two months old. No one really writes at that age. XD
