I'm planning on starting a book club next month and I've never been apart of one before (in real life, not in the YWS Clubs section, in case that needs clarification). So I was wondering if anyone has some advice on what to do/what not to do, any kind of tips in general, especially on how to select books to read.

Oh, book clubs are fun! I've participated in several, usually over the summer, and the general way to do it is to compile a list of books for the duration of the summer/semester/year. I guess it depends on your collective reading speed but I would set a book every two weeks. Cover a variety of genres. Here are my picks: Science Fiction: Virtually anything by Asimov, Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson, Boneshaker - Cherie Priest (More steampunk than sci-fi, but an enjoyable read anyway), or for something a little bit more contemporary, William Gibson's novels. Mystery: I'm partial to Agatha Christie. Monsieur Poirot is always entertaining. Some other authors are Jeffrey Archer (who I feel has gone somewhat downhill in recent years), Carl Hiassen, Libba Bray(Going Bovine), Cory Doctorow(Makers, For The Win), Kenneth Oppel(Half Brother was quite interesting) and Jack Kerouac.
