Poetry Scholarships

They aren’t very common. At least, they aren’t nearly as common as sports, agricultural, or medical scholarships. But they are out there and for you poets looking for a little extra college money, here the list I’ve managed to pull together.

Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Fund
http://www.dorothyprizes.org/checklist.htm
Age: Under 40
Deadline: October 15th
Awards: $1,000 to $25,000

Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowships
http://www.poetryfoundation.org/foundation/prizes_fellowship.html
Age: 21 to 31
Deadline: March 31, 2011.
Awards: Five fellowships in the amount of $15,000.

Poetry Out Loud
http://www.poetryoutloud.org/
Age: High School Students Grades 9 – 12.
Awards: Anywhere between $200 and $20,000.
Other Info: Poetry Out Loud is a National Competition but is run at individual state levels and through schools so this scholarship is something that you would have to discuss with your teacher as well as maybe doing a little Google search of your own.

The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
http://www.artandwriting.org/
Age: Grades 7 through 12.
Deadline: Varies depending on region.
Awards: Portions of $3.9 million to students.

Madison Review Poetry and Fiction Prizes
http://www.pw.org/writing_contests/madison_review_prizes
Age: Anyone
Deadline: February 1st, 2013 [$10 entry fee]
Awards: Two prizes of $1,000 each.

This is just a portion of the poetry scholarships currently available but these are some of the best known. If you have knowledge of any I may have missed, let me know about them below and I’ll add them to the list.

Never forget who you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.

I'm definitely going to be applying for the first one, seeing as how it's the only one I'm age-eligible for. But yeah, Lily. These are awesome!
