Whenever I looked right into Chloe’s eyes, it was like seeing a mirror image of my own, eyes, deep and green with a wild, mischevious fire underneath.. There were, however, the little differences that made us recognizable, at least to our parents. Chloe was always the prettier twin, the one who would rely on her looks while I worked for everything.
Although we were identical, there was nothing remotely the same about us. Chloe went in every other month to get her fiery red hair cut and highlighted, while mine was kept in a no-nonsense French braid. Chloe always wore skirts that showed a little too much leg, while I wore skinny jeans and fitted sweaters. Chloe was flirty, while I was quite and studious.
I lay down in my bed of our shared room, pen poised over journal, music playing from my Iphone. Something seemed off. Chloe had locked herself in our attached bathroom and I could hear the shower running. I got up, padding in bare feet over the purple plush carpet. I knocked on the door.
“Go away, Cam.” I could hear Chloe call. Her voice seemed weak and fragile. My heart began to race.
“Chloe Isabelle, you open the door.” I demanded, hoping my voice didn’t portray my fear for her. It must have been a twin thing. Whenever Chloe sounded scared, sounded like she was nervous, I automatically wanted to defend her. It must have been because I was seven minutes older.
“Go away, Camryn Elizabeth.” I could hear Chloe retort over the water. I winced. Camryn Elizabeth. I had always hated that name, always wanted Chloe’s middle name instead.
“Not until you open the door.” I said. I head a sigh, shuffling and the door unlocking.
Chloe leaned on the door jamb. She pushed her bangs from her eyes as she stared at me, her eyes as hard as marble. I stared back at her, matching her stare.
“What?” Chloe asked. She has retreated under her hard shell.
“Just checking to see you weren’t going to kill yourself.” I shrugged.
Chloe snorted, “yeah right.” I raised my eyebrows, and puhed passed her into the bathroom. I sat on the countertop.
“I’m not leaving until you tell me what’s up.” I said, crossing my arms over my chest. Chloe just sighed theatrically, and slid down to sit against the wall. Her eyes were large and misty, she was just holding back tears.
“We turn seventeen soon,” was all she said, “Cam, Cammy.” A tear rolled down my twins porcelain cheek, her skin seeming more colourless underneath the harsh bathroom lights.
“What, Clo?” I asked. It was more urgent then before. Chloe had the tough exterior, no one ever let her see her cry. I, however, cried at every sappy chick flick. I took a deep breath in. Now it was time to be strong, and not break down along side my sister.
Chloe looked at me again, tears dancing down her face, “Cam, I- I had sex, with Luke, last weekend. It was out first time, right, for our year-anniversary.” Luke was Chloe’s boyfriend, she was the head cheerleader, he was the debate team captain.
“Did you?” I gasped. I had never been kissed, never had a boyfriend. I couldn’t ever, ever imagine having sex.
“Yeah.” Chloe nodded sadly, “and it was romantic, and I really, really like him. But, my period didn’t come, and it was supposed too.”
“Clo, you don’t think you’re, you know?” I asked. Chloe nodded sadly. She let her tears roll down her face, and hit the tiles as she leaned forward to open the cabinets behind my feet. She pulled out a little stick, and handed it to me. I grasped the pregenancy test with shaking, sweaty fingers.
“Read it. Yes or no.” Chloe said. I glanced down at the reader.
“Yes.” I said, my hushed voice trembling in time to my hands and fingers.
