Chapter 9

I slipped through the door, as to not disturb the morning quietness. The street was already empty at this hour, I was late, very late. I had no idea, as I woke up, that it was this late. I hadn’t wanted to be torn away from the comforting arms of sleep, where everything was beautiful, colorful. A world where going back was still possible. So different from here.

I whipped around as loud footsteps resounded in the empty street. Matteo was coming towards me, with a huge grin illuminating his face. I ducked my head, concentrating on my muddy, black converses and putting one in front of the other.

“Hey, Kaylee,” his deep voice rumbled through my heart.

“Hi,” I mumbled without lifting my head. No eye contact.

“I’ve been meaning to catch up with you after the game but I got caught up. So, you go to St-Andrew,” he said, tilting his head in the direction we were heading in.

I stayed silent at that statement, seeing I had played for the St-Andy’s team last night; it was kind of a no-brainer. I could feel his eyes on me, on the school book I had in my arms.

“Eleventh grade chemistry, eh?” He asked.

I simply nodded again. His shoulder bumped into mine and I clutched the chemistry book tighter to my chest, a feeble shield.

“I remember that,” he said, his small laugh creeping to my ears, “I took that class last year, because I was in an honor program down in Detroit. Alright, you have a nice day.”

I lifted my head to see that we were already in front of my school. A couple was outside, taking one last drag of their cigarette before having to suffer through another day of torture.

“I’ll see you around”

I didn’t even bother to turn around as his voice faded away behind me. I opened the door and engulfed into the dim building.

Chapter 10

Matteo

I stood there like a moron, watching her walk away. The chilly wind was mixing up her hair; it looked like a lion’s mane, with a tint of the coppery light reflecting on it. I sighed and turned around, making my way to my next destination.

Surely I had made a fool of myself in front of this girl, talking like this. I’m such a moron. I shook my head, promising myself to take the next chance I could get to redeem myself.
I turned on the path that was leading to Ashbury College. The school looked just as I remembered from the night we passed before it, it looked just as severe and rigid. These, I was used too, though. Between my expensive years at my private middle school and the Science Academy in Detroit, I had worn plenty of stiff collared uniforms, not mentioning the required attitude that always came with those.

I pushed the door open, and found myself in a large hall, studded with students all sporting the burgundy attire with the silver logo printed on the chest. I looked down to my own ripped jeans, feeling under-dressed. I might have been standing there for a little too long because a girl with long blond hair tied up in a pony tail came up to me.

“Hello, this is your first day?” She asked, her smile illuminating the hall.

“Uhm, I’m here to get my schedule. I’ll be starting tomorrow,” I said.

Behind her, girls and guys were gathering up, their eyes fixated on me like I was an alien.
“Oh, yes, well you should probably go see at the office. It’s right across from here,” she said, pointing at a door, framed by windows and a notice board, “Will you stay here until lunch hour?”

I looked behind her, where a face caught my attention. It looked so similar to the one in front of me. The same eyes, the same mouth, the same bleached blond hair.

I looked back at the first girl, “Uh, I don’t know how much time it will take for all of this.” My eyes were dragged back to the other girl.

“Yes, we are twins,” she said, a smile stretching on her rosy lips.

“I’m sorry,” I said, tearing my eyes away from their identical faces. I was probably making them uncomfortable.

“Don’t worry, we get that all the time,” she laughed and rested her hand on my arm, “I’m Jamie. If you’re still here when we get out for lunch we can give you a tour of the school.”

I nodded, smiling, “That would be very nice.”

Hey twinnette. ;)

I didn't want to be the first review, but every time I wait for someone to review first, I forget... So here I am! even though you might not want a review from me. ;)

The story is coming along great, and I love the little bit from Matteo you've put in there. And the way you write Kayle's part. Very realistic, good job for that. :) I don't think I see any nitpicks, but it might just be my eyes playing tricks on me. You know I'm not that good with that kind of stuff.

I laughed at this part. Writers write about things they know. ;) Hope we see them later on in the story, and it's not just this little part!

Keep it up.
