The other day I tried to get into Suite101.com as a writer. When they requested some of my work, they limited me to nonfiction, specifically stating, "No poetry."...I didn't like that very much, so this is what I wrote them. I'm thinking about submitting it to them still. What do you all think? Thoughts on improving the poem would be great. Thanks! -Clay
No poetry?
Poetry lies closer to the Truth than reason,
And reason lies more than the greatest politicians,
Who never cease to open their vile mouths.
No poetry?
Poetry is the vein of the heart,
It bleeds forevermore from those who let it.
Nonfiction describes what is "real",
And what is fake.
"Give me the facts," you say,
But facts can lie.
Facts can hide what "needs" to be disguised,
But folks are too foolish to realize that all these facts are manipulated by People who try to cover up all their little lies,
By placing all their little "and"'s and "I"'s
In all of the right places.
(Words that change the meaning, but mean nothing in themselves.)
Don't lie to me, sir,
I know of the "facts" that you tell.
And now you say to me, "Go to hell!"
Because you know that you've been caught. (Meaning caught in a lie.)
You fiend!
Why don't you do what you ought?
If you had done what you ought, you wouldn't have been caught!
And I wouldn't be "going to hell."
Don't fake me out, Sir.
Go with what you feel.
Feel for what's right,
The "fiction" of life,
It's the stuff that puts nonfiction to shame.
Do what's right, sir, and you'll never be to blame.
The world can throw its blame,
But you'll know better.
[You'll know the truth; you'll cut'em down to size.] (I've tried several different phrases for the part in brackets; nothing seems to fit. I like this one best. If you've got any thoughts, fire away.)
You'll know their blame is just a disguise,
Just a way to cover up their lies,
In a way that antagonizes the truth. (Maybe changing 'truth' to 'light'?)
No, World, I don't want your "proof". Your nonfiction.
Give me something real.
