It was only minutes until they come. A guy in uniform comes in and assesses me and the man. He turns around and talks to the EMTs that followed him in. I watch them both as they lift the man onto a gurney and wheel him out of the room.
Then the police officer comes to me.
“Hello, there. My name is Officer Waunakee. What’s your name, sugar?” I looked up at him. He had a big pot belly and a grey moustache. I look into his eyes and see a life of experience.
“Haven Foreman.” I whisper. He squats down so that he’s eye level with me.
“Do you know what happened here, Haven?” He took out a weathered note pad and a pen. He flipped to the very back of the note pad.
“I walked in and was wanting to look around. I heard a crash back here, so I came back to look what had happened. The chair was on top of the man and he was unconscious. He had a gash in his stomach so I cleaned it with Iodine and bandaged it as best I could. I think the bleeding stopped but I’m not sure.” I whispered this all to him as he furiously scribbled it down.
“Haven, do you have anybody we could call to come pick you up or something?” He put the note pad away and looked at me.
I thought about that for a moment. My mother certainly did not need to hear another call from the police department, especially since we were new in town. I shook my head no. “I drove myself here, I can drive back.” I said. I tried to smile convincingly, though I knew he was not convinced, yet he let me go after I gave him my cell phone number.
I walked shakily into the street. It was still raining. I walked across the street, deciding that it was time to return home.
I got into my car and started it. I heard the motor roar to life and I was on my way home.
I got to thinking about the time I've had so far here in Willow Creek. It hasn't been the finest time of my life. It was my first day in town and I was already traumatized.
By the time I was home, I had composed my face. I decided that I wouldn't tell my mom about this. She already had too much to worry about.
I walked in the door, and was greeted with the smell of my mother's vegetable marinara sauce. She was making spagetti. "Hello, honey. Are you hungry? Dinner's almost ready." She yelled. I walked towards the kitchen. I stopped short of the doorway. I looked down at my clothing. I was wearing a blood smeared shirt and dirtied shorts. I turn around and go up the stairs while yelling to her, "I'm going to take a shower first!"
