INT. WAREHOUSE-NIGHT

Nathaniel unlocks the door to the MED room and steps inside. He takes a seat in front of the computer desk. He pushes a button on the table. The button flashes blue twice, and all the computer monitors turn on, displaying the words: 'Execute MED action:' the colon at the end of the sentence is blinking, with atyping cursor next to it. Nathaniel pulls the manual out of his coat pocket, and opens it, flipping the pages to a chapter called 'List of computer code.'

NATHANIEL
All right, let's see.

Nathaniel scans his eyes over the text. After a second of reading, he gets a confused look on his face.

NATHANIEL
(Mumbling to himself)
Activate Data Particle Manipulators? What the hell?

Still looking at the book, Nathaniel types 7^Y>>:LOP on the keyboard, and hits the ENTER key. Suddenly, a metal panel attached to the wall swings open, hissing air. A tray slides out of the wall that carries eight recentagular objects with handles like that of a gun. Nathaniel gets up and walks over to the tray. A note is attached to one of the handles of the objects. Nathaniel pulls it off and reads it.

NATHANIEL
'Nathaniel, I ran out of paper before I could include this portion, so I'll just explain it here. These are Data Particle Manipulators. When you are inside MR, the people/persons who are in reality can use the computers to change the objects here into whatever you need. When the DPMs, as I call them, are inside the movie, they are turned into a special piece of data, just like you are, except they are transmitting complex codes all around them that allows them to be changed by a certain function only my computers can execute. I'd explain the science of it, but I don't have enough space to write it. But remember--These can only be changed into an object of equal or lesser size. Any more, and they will automatically be burned out. Use them with caution. --Alan.'

Nathaniel stops reading, and admires the DPMs for a moment. He looks like he is thinking hard about something.

NATHANIEL
(Nods)
It's time.

EXT. SANDRA'S HOUSE-MORNING

Sandra rushes out of her house, clearly annoyed by something. She goes to the door, opens it, gets inside, and speeds off angrily. As she leaves the shot, we--

EXT. WAREHOUSE-MORNING

Sandra's car pulls up into the parking lot, next to the rest of the team's. The rest of the group is waiting for her outside. She gets out of her car, and slams the door behind her, furiously walking up to the crowd.

NATHANIEL
You're late.

SANDRA
(Frustrated, getting the uncombed hair out of her eyes)
Well, it was pretty damn short notice, wasn't it?

Nathaniel raises his eyebrow, and walks over to the door, unlocking it once he arrives. He swings the door open and motions them to go inside. They do so. We--

CUT TO:

INT. MED ROOM-MORNING

The team is sitting around, either on the floor, or chairs scattered around the room. Nathaniel is standing in the center of the MEDs.

CASSIDY
So what is this all about, anyway?

NATHANIEL
I've decided to take part in a little training program that my brother left me for the machines. And as my team, you're coming along for the ride. This is designed to help you keep calm, even in very intense situations.

ALAN
Why would we need to do that?

NATHANIEL
Well, there's two reasons. 1: When we're doing something intense and exciting, but it's vital that we do that, I don't need 4 people freaking out and me having to calm them down, and 2: If your heart rate goes above 150 beats per minute, the machine will take you out of MR automatically.

LOGAN
What, why?

NATHANIEL
My brother thought if you were in a situation where you could get killed, you'd have to get out fast. 150 is way more than the average human's normal heartbeat, and it would probably come up if another character was, say, holding a gun to your head.

SANDRA
Yeah, so how are we supposed to control it.

NATHANIEL
Well, there are a few ways. You can, using sheer power of the mind, convince yourself that nothing is really happening, it's just a movie, etc., etc. You can use the vagel maneuver, just try and relax your mind or body, there are lots of ways. We'll go through all that later. But for now...

Nathaniel walks over to the table, picks up a DVD, slips it into the drive of one of the computers, and types in something on the keyboard. He looks back at the team.

NATHANIEL
...we've got to get ready. There's work to be done.
And the angel said unto him, “stop hitting yourself, stop hitting yourself.” But lo, he could not stop, for the angel was hitting him with his own hands.

I was flummoxed by fractious Franny's decision to abrogate analgesics for the moribund victims of the recent conflagration. Of course, to display histrionics was discretionary, but I did so anyways, implicating a friend in my drama to make the effect cumulative. I think a misanthrope would have a prosaic appellation, perhaps one related to autonomy and the rejection of anthropocentrism. I think they wouldn't think much of the prominence of watching the coagulation of tea to prognosticate future malevolent events, not even if those events were related to jurisprudence.
