Simon Wiesenthal, the famous Nazi hunter, and founder of the Weisenthal foundation, is dead at 96.

Simon Wiesenthal: "The Conscience of the Holocaust, Dies in Vienna" at 96
Press Release
Simon Wiesenthal Center

Simon Wiesenthal, the famous Nazi Hunter has died in Vienna at the age of 96, the Simon Wiesenthal Center announced today (September 20th).

"Simon Wiesenthal was the conscience of the Holocaust," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean and founder of the International Human Rights NGO named in Mr. Wiesenthal’s honor, adding, "When the Holocaust ended in 1945 and the whole world went home to forget, he alone remained behind to remember. He did not forget. He became the permanent representative of the victims, determined to bring the perpetrators of the history’s greatest crime to justice. There was no press conference and no president or Prime Minister or world leader announced his appointment. He just took the job. It was a job no one else wanted.

The task was overwhelming. The cause had few friends. The Allies were already focused on the Cold War, the survivors were rebuilding their shattered lives and Simon Wiesenthal was all alone, combining the role of both prosecutor and detective at the same time."

Overcoming the world’s indifference and apathy, Simon Wiesenthal helped bring over 1,100 Nazi War Criminals before the Bar of Justice.

There will be a news conference at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, Wednesday, September 20th at 10 am.

Sounds rather vengeful to me. But I suppose that justice is also important, so I can't say I don't blame him or that I condemn him for anything.

I can't believe you just said that Bobo. Nazi hunters were righteous human beings bringing evil men to their justice. Simon Wiesenthal embodied this. He will be missed.

As long as he died in his sleep and without pain, then that is alright by me. And by Nazi Hunter... Does that mean he was one of those kind of guys who killed the Nazis?

(sorry the thing you sent has alot of big words and I really can't be bothered to look them up)

Justice is just another word for vengance, isn't it? Call it what you wan't, doesn't change what it is - good cause or not.

I like how your post had absolutely no worth to the thread, Qi--just starting another debate.

In any case, though I admit I did not know of this man before reading this post, he does sound like he should be respected and honored. I'm sure his contribution was great indeed.

Qi didn't start the debate, Hunter. I did. But the thing is, while vengeance and justice can be the same, it doesn't mean that vengeance is always to an evil end or that justice is always a righteous justice. Like I said, I don't think that this vengeance was misplaced or that the justice was undeserved or unrighteous justice.

There's just something about hunting down and punishing any kind of person that seems like a bad way to spend your life to me. But it makes a big difference that he legally prosecuted them, instead of taking it into his own hands- that would be bad.

Legal prosecution is always fun!
You shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, instead, you should read every single book to see what every book is about before you even come close to judging its viability.

As far as I know, Bobo, he only brought them before the courts--if they were convicted and punished, it was through the juducial system.

*frowns* you have to look at it from the point of view of the Germans. Did they really have a choice? Wasn't it, to a great extent, brainwashing? Yeah, it was. In my opinion. I think this guy was a messed up dude obsessed w/ vengeance. Go ahead, flame me.

I will. I don't have to look at it from the point of view of the "poor 'brainwashed' Germans" which, incidentally, is bullshit, pardon my french. Yes, they were fed propoganda, but they were NOT brainwashed. There were many many Germans who were "righteous gentiles" who saved people from the camps. One of them was Oscar Schindler, who was a registered NAZI party member. Also, its not like he persecuted joe-schmoe auschwitz guard, but rather people like Heinrich Himmler (although not him because he was, I believe, killed at Nuremburg) but all the people he brought to justice were all high-ranking NAZI officials, mostly SS, who had a high level position in planning and/or carrying out the "Final Solution", so no, they were not just "following orders" they were deliberately murdering over 6 million people. Closer to 10 million when you add Slavs, Gypsies, Homosexuals, retards, political prisoners and all the other "undesireables". You're lucky I don't call you a revisionist or a nazi sympathizer, as it is obvious you don't think it was right to bring Nazi murderers to justice. You, madam are a nazi revisionist, and make me want to vomit.

HEY. Knock it off, guys.

Dan, I know it's personal. And I'm not saying you're right or wrong. But PLEASE do not flame other members. Even if she did give you permission... it is not tolerated.

Misty was posting her opinion. I know it is a very touchy subject and a very touchy opinion. If you'd like to take it to the PMs or Debate Boards, go ahead. But try to keep it civil here guys, okay? Again, not saying anyone was in the wrong, and I'm not saying everyone was right. We just don't want members killing each other, especially in the Lounge.

Thanks. :)

Crysi, I'm sorry, really I am, but I just had to say something. I mean, she baisically came out and said that nazi hunters are bad, but nazis who murder millions of people are just "brainwashed"
