Wrote this awhile back after seeing this amazing picture I don't have anymore, which was of a kitchen knife covered in blood with this little plastic heart necklace dangling from it. It inspired me to go off and write this piece--which I can't really explain--so enjoy. All critques and general comments welcome. Also, all iltalics and underlines are intentional, thank you.
With Lobe;
The note read: “with lobe, darling,”
It was dripping with tampered, dirty blood.
It was stuffed into the chest of the forty-something man, like a frigid pinata.
I disliked it thoroughly.
It smelled of still-baking cookies and hot, sweltering life-force.
It smelled like bitter integrity.
I retracted my scattered thoughts.
There was something else—there in the messed up scribbles.
I looked harder; burying the words inside.
With lobe, darling,
She spelled her name with two 'K's'.
STARKK. Stark white, dark red, mellowing black—
All there in the three little words.
I shut my eyes carefully, and dreamed.
He stood by the sink, lathering his burly hands before a drink,
His viciously crooked eyes narrowing with ironic concentration.
The lug never knew what hit him.
The note still read, “with lobe, darling,”
My heart still attempted to decipher the riddle while she wept.
She was creeping up to him now, over and over,
Rusted knife in hand swinging along with graceful hips.
Maybe there was a bit of smile on her ruby lips,
Tainted—waiting for what will never come.
Frozen, I tipped the victim's head back and read further on.
“Forgotten,” plainly stripped, the meaty neck. There was a trace of luck.
She left a small clue, tattered, and silken among the remains—
A soft sort of calling card.
A single name: Starkk.
I'm sure she's smiling now, slick white teeth accentuating the eyes.
The lonely, dearly deathly, lustful green eyes.
Where are those teeth and eyes now? And sultry lips?
And devious fingers, strapped to the handle of a blade—
It made for a quick getaway.
He turned to look at her casually, not too forcefully,
That would be out of character.
“Darling,” his cracked lips slit open, begging for breath
That will never come or go again.
He kissed her once. Believing she was his,
Happy, singularly, he loved her. Why else would she do it?
Her last words were printed definitively on the stained page:
WITH LOBE, DARLING.
Lobe, lobe, lobe...
I couldn't tear apart the phrases. On his left cheek, spilled,
“Take me.” sporadically, I frowned, seeing it all fade on.
She faltered on the last step, believing she might be caught—
But he never guessed what spied within her swan-like brow.
Of course, she never smiled.
There was nothing to smile about.
I pulled the scrap out of his chest and studied it, feeling woozy.
I could see something more now—a misprint.
A mistake in clear-cutting logic.
I glanced up and around for a moment, and then
Crushed the bloody slip between my fingers. It made a distinctive,
Disquieting squish. I crumpled it up further and shoved it
In my pocket. Then I reviewed the scene once more.
He spun, gloriously grinning, when STARKK tapped him on the shoulder.
WITH LOBE, DARLING, she whispered it in his ear.
Then she plunged the thing into his ribs irrationally.
Unthinkingly, too quickly for baited breath.
She never smiled. She wasn't heartbroken.
I tossed his head gently to the side and caught his left ear,
Seeing smeared, poorly scratched on the pliable surface—
WITH LOVE, DARLING.
And that was all I wrote.
