A reflection on my favourite statue ever, Michelangelo's Pieta - just in time for Easter.

Once, you winged His shoulderblade;
Once, you bore a king.
Now you must hold His cold crown,
And bear the bones He starved of sin.
None may look upon you now,
A medusa in your loss.
A child's mortality, misplaced alchemy
that turns all from grace to rock.
Mothers will claim kinship in tears,
Thinkers break on your strength of faith;
Histories will map your darkness;
Gamblers ever tip prophecy or snake;
But the sculptor came closest
When he marbled your last embrace.
You, perfection vivified, mediumed
the human in god's face.
Twofold as your son, and twice create -
Once from rib and once from stone.
Madonna of rocks, Sunrise will justify
The pity you bore alone.
