I was dead. I was in heaven. Death doesn’t always have to be negative, does it? A sweet fragrance filled the air around me, exuding any bad toxins from my body and cleansing me from the inside out. My mind was completely clear, no thought was completely coherent or completely incoherent. It was bliss, or perhaps a form of insanity. I didn’t know whether or not I was a human being, an insect, or even just a floating soul.
It was a different feeling than waking up from a nap or even a very peaceful sleep. I felt as though I had died and was finally at peace with anything and everything. Hopefully all humans will get to experience such a blissful feeling at one point of their lives…
But then, I was not dead. I’d not noticed it immediately, but the pitter pattering of rain was invading my ears. So then, where was I?
I slowly moved my mouth. My lips felt a little damp. After regaining myself for god knows how long I finally worked up the courage to open my eyes. My vision was blurred, but focus returned after a few seconds. I had a very unspectacular view of a clear ceiling contaminated by what seemed like a billion raindrops. Vaguely, I could see past the raindrops into the darkened black sky. It was grey and ominous, made me want to close my eyes and pretend I had never woken up…
Nothing made sense. How did I get in this room? What was I doing here? Just…who in the hell was I? Oh god…please let this be a dream….
I tried to force my body to sit up, but as soon as I did I felt a myriad of aches, and bruises, and restlessness. Everything from the bottom of my feet to the back of my neck stung something awful when I tried to move them. Not something I expected. The pain was sharp but not unbearable. I thought if I just laid down here for a few more minutes I could hoist myself up.
Now that I was completely awake from the coma-like sleep I had been in, I turned my head to the side to see just what kind of room I was in. To the left of where I had slept there was nothing out of the ordinary. I could see that all the walls of this place were completely clear. There was a door barely two feet away from me. It was like I had stumbled through the door and immediately passed out. Maybe that is what happened…
There was something else peculiar I noticed. The floor…there was none. For however long I had been asleep, it had all been on soil. I could imagine that my hair and my clothes were completely dirty. Come to think of it, there was a sort of dusty taste inside my mouth when I woke up too.
After getting bored of looking at the door I decided to turn my head to the right of where I was laying down.
My senses were completely enveloped…by an overwhelming sense of beauty.
To the side of me…around me completely while I’d been sleeping was…an ocean of flowers. They fleeted down rows and rows and rows with different shapes and sizes, all excellently organized and blooming with life. There were roses, and dandelions and yellow flowers, purple flowers, and blue flowers and flowers I never thought even existed. Some were big and some were small, but all of them blended into each other so that they created the illusion of unity. I turned my head around as far as it could go, and the flowers around me never seemed to escape my view. It was gorgeous. Big foot could have appeared in front of me and I would have been too breathless to say anything.
What a strange place. I was in a building and yet…I could just as easily have been outside had I not known.
I didn’t know how long my consciousness was completely focused on the different flower beds. It could have been just about 30 seconds or it could have been as long as ten minutes. I’ll never know. That one moment seemed….eternal for lack of a better word.
When I finally regained my senses I tried lifting myself up again. I was weak and every joint I tried to move hurt more than the last. Eventually after struggling so much I had to use my hands in order to bring my feet standing up on the ground. I was very wobbly on my feet, and had to use a few minutes of my precious time just to balance correctly. I’d become a toddler who felt like they were walking for the first time. It was exciting, but at the same time quite scary that I would fall any second. I smiled dryly at the crappy analogy I’d thought of.
I was still a bit unstable on my feet, but as long as I didn’t make any hasty movements I thought I’d be fine. I was never one to be extremely tall, but in this higher position standing there was a much better view of the lovely flowers located all around me. I took another few moments to take in all the loveliness.
So far…everything seemed very dreamlike. First I woke up in a weirdly felt dazed sleep, a fact I know that no matter how long I live I will never experience again. Second, there was this heavenly flowerbed around me, and the rain outside looked blackened and unnatural. Finally, I had no idea where the bugger I was or how I could possibly have gotten in such a strange position.
I took my first step toward a destination. What that destination was I did not know now, so perhaps exploring the place around me would be the best option. There were walkways located in the center of where I was. Judging by the ceiling and where the walls concaved in, I could tell this was an extremely small building, smaller than a lot of lower class homes. Most likely the place I awoke in was the best focal viewpoint of the whole garden.
As I took my first step toward one of the only pathways available to me, I felt my feet get a bit cautious. I’d not noticed it while looking around, but in front of me where I’d taken my first step was…a giant hole, easily big enough to fit a person. Maybe two.
I gulped. Everything here was odd, but this was certainly….a bit eerie to say the least. It was definitely less than a meter from where my body was laying and in addition it was dug pretty deep down too. My first thought was that someone wanted to plant more flowers or a tree, but it seemed very unethical given the location. Minus that all of the other flowers sprouted at ground level, while if someone were to plant the flowers down there they would only grow in the hole. Something was definitely amiss in the whole picture.
Directly next to where the hole was dug up, there was a large mound of dirt and a shovel next to it. I could tell the soil up was still wet which lead me to believe…that the hole was dug up very recently. This made me gulp again like an actor in some cheesy B horror movie from the 70’s.
Who could have unearthed all the soil and for what purpose? I could not think straight. My mind was blank and incoherent, my stomach empty and growling, my body staggering and disoriented. For now, it was the most I could do to turn away from the hole and begin down the path.
