I find myself wishing this from time to time. Whenever life feels too easy or boring, I wish I lived in a time that had more struggle in it. Where instead of your biggest concern being whether you got a good grade on a test or whether your favorite show is going to be canceled, you had to worry about getting enough food for the winter or fighting to survive. Now, I know there are parts of the world that are still like that, but most of the developed world has rendered the necessities of life fairly easy to obtain.
Of course, I usually realize that for as boring as this life can be, at least you don't have to constantly worry about death. But then I start thinking about other things, other reasons for wanting to be in a more primal world.
I want a world where the map hasn't finished being drawn and there could still be new worlds out there to discover. I want a world where the unknown mysteries of life and the universe haven't been diluted by philosophers and scientific discovery. I want a world where everything hasn't already been thought of.
Sometimes it becomes even more selfish. I wish I could be in a world that still had powerful monarchies and vast empires, and I was one of those royals who had been given the so-called divine right to rule. I wish I was in a world where the great mythologies of old dictated how people thought, and selfish, worldly pleasures were considered moral and even heroic things to strive for. I wish I was in a world where I didn't have to constantly worry about a government or moral majority dictating what was right or wrong for me. Just me.
It's all fantasy of course, and many would probably just tell me to shut up and realize that the era and place I'm living is the best in human history. But I'm not always so sure.
How does everyone else feel about our modern world?
