Chapter 3

I wandered into science in a haze and sat in the first seat I saw, completely oblivious to the fact that Kale was waving at me from across the room. I was sneaking another look at the note when he put his hand on my shoulder, making me jump like a kangaroo.
“Whoa. Where did you come from?” I gasped, my heartbeat still resembling the clunking of a racehorse’s hooves.
“Over there,” he said, pointing across the room to two desks that were scooted up next to each other. Looking around the room, I realized that all of the desks were in pairs. “I waved at you, but apparently, you’re a little out of it.”
“Yeah, sorry. Tough math class,” I lied unconvincingly. “So, I guess I was right about the partners thing.”
“Uh huh. I suppose I have to hold up my end of the deal now. Unless of course…” He trailed off hopefully.
“Ooooh, no you don’t. If I had to do all those problems in English, you have to hold up your end of our deal.”
He sighed dramatically. “Alright. I guess when you put it that way…”
I laughed, completely forgetting the note in my bag. “You’d better get started. And maybe I’ll help.”
“I knew you weren’t completely evil!” He moved my stuff to the desk next to his and sat down. “So, uh, what’s an atom?”
“You’ve got to be kidding.”
“No,” he said innocently. “I honestly have absolutely no idea.”
I rolled my eyes. “Really? Then I guess we’re just going to have to fail, because I don’t know either.”
“Darn,” he said, feigning disappointment.
I nodded. “Darn.”
“Oh wait,” he exclaimed, “I do remember! I’m not dumb! Praise the Lord, halleluiah! It’s B!”
I laughed at this mental breakthrough. “So now you’re going to get us an A?”
“Well, duh!”
We spent the rest of the class period arguing about neutrons and making fun of each other, and when Ms. Jenkinz announced that we needed a partner for a project that was due in two weeks, he immediately started begging me.
“Please, please, please! If you don’t say yes, I’ll fail!”
I pretended to think about it for a moment and agreed. “I guess.”
“Yes! So do you want to work on it tonight so we get a head start?”
“Sure. But I’ll have to come to your house, because my dad is having his friends over for a football game tonight.”
“Done,” he replied. “Here’s my address.” He wrote it on my hand along with his phone number.
I blushed. “Why do I need that?”
He chuckled. “Don’t get so excited. It’s just incase you get lost.”
I giggled nervously. “Who says I was excited?”
“Um, nobody.”
“Good. Because I wasn’t.”
“Sure. Of course you weren’t,” he said sarcastically.
“Exactly.”
He rolled his eyes. “Okay, whatever. I’ll see you at lunch.”
The bell had just rang, so I grabbed my bag and walked out the door and was surprised to find Max sanding there.
“What are you doing here?” I asked him.
“I wanted to walk you to class. If that’s okay.”
My eyes grew wide. “Y-yeah, sure,” I stuttered.
He took my bag and asked, “Where to?”
“Um, Mr. Gorgodi,”
“Gorgodi, huh? He’s like, completely deaf, right?”
“Yeah, we get away with everything in his class. It’s pretty awesome.”
I jumped as the late bell rang and I realized that we were only half way to class. “Crap.”
“What’s wrong?”
“I’m late.”
His mouth stretched into a grin as wide as the Mississippi River. “No problem. I can forage pretty much any signature.” He pulled out a piece of notebook paper and scribbled something down. “There. Now you were in the nurse’s office because you slipped and stubbed your toe.”
I glanced at it nervously and found that it looked extremely real. “T-thanks.”
“No problem,” he said. “I’ll see you around.”
We were right outside Mr. Gorgodi’s classroom now. He handed me my bag back, and just as I thought he was going to leave, he leaned in and gave me a hug that made my entire body feel like I had just shoved my finger in an electrical socket.
Then he was gone, and I stood numbly in the hallway for a moment before coming to my senses and walking in.
Kenzie stared as I walked into social studies and handed Mr. Gorgodi my late note. I grinned at her and slipped into the empty seat beside her.
“Where were you?” She mouthed.
“Max,” I mouthed back.
She looked confused, so I tore a piece of paper out of my spiral and passed her a note when Mr. Gorgodi wasn’t looking.
He walked me to class!
I didn’t want to share the part about the hug quite yet. It might not even mean anything.
Kenzie scribbled her response quickly and passed it back to me.
You’re kidding! I want details!
So I told her. About the hug, him waiting for me, everything. She was my best friend, and she deserved to know. I was in the middle of explaining about the hug when my pencil broke. I reached into my bag, looking for a new one, and stumbled on another note. I opened it, thinking it was from Kenzie and I had just forgotten to read it or something, and discovered it was another one in the same handwriting as the one from this morning in math.
You’re eyes are the most mysteriously deep color I’ve ever seen.
It had to have been Max. Right?

Alright, alright, there was some stuff I liked about this chapter. You kept your voice very constant and unfailing throughout the whole piece, you kept your writing as nice and descriptive as ever, and gave me good imagery and I could see the whole thing.

Now, problem points ( I’m sorry! :smt091 ):

 I found this part to be kind of unbelievable. At the end of chap. 2, I already thought the whole “Text Me” thing was sort of childish and phony, but I just thought this chapter was a bit stiff and fake-sounding, at least the ‘texting’ idea, not in the way you wrote. Like, it seems sort of lame after the whole ‘we-have-this-huge-connection’ deal from Lauren and Kale before, then he’s like “Don’t tell me, I no dis one” it’s like, what? It makes both Lauren and Kale seem sort of shallow. I know you’re planning on rewriting this, so don’t take this too hard, but I would try obliterating all of the texting thing, and coming up with something deeper and with more of a genuine connection.

 Why would Lauren both writing out all three letters of ‘kay’ when ‘k’ is acceptable and she’s using such total text-speak? :D This one is subjective, just something I was wondering about.

 This isn’t a bad thing: Just wanted to say that I think it’s cute how Lauren is painting her fingernails to look good for Kale at school. Maybe play that little fact up to make Lauren seem less confident in herself? Have her freak out about which color he’ll like, and perhaps her clothing and hair too? Have her stress out a little more, instead of just like, ‘oh we’re in love, and I’m gonna look so hot in this nail polish’. Girls stress out, right? Well, Lauren is a girl trying to impress a boy, so she probably should too.

 Okay, I don’t see the point of this chapter at all. It didn’t move the story anywhere. Like, they text each other about her fingernails and say good night. It didn’t take us a step further into their romance, it didn’t open a new mystery or solve an old one, it didn’t add a twist to the plot, it didn’t open up any can of worms. It was just filler, a little spot where your characters made contact, but not strongly. The dialog was a bit uncomfortable anyway, and I don’t get the point of this section. There would need to be something to make it more interesting or add a twist or something. Some suggestions from the bottomless International Suggestion Bank of Roo? :smt003 Hmm. What if you make a twist? Like keep the texting thing going on, but then Kale says something unexpected like “G2G, my girlfriend just got here” or “g2g pack :(“ and Lauren will say “for where?” and Kale might say “we’re moving this Friday” or something. Or what if Max starts texting Lauren right in the middle of when she’s texting Kale and gives her mixed feelings? Or just cut this whole chapter. That’s what I might end up doing in the end. :\

 Another positive one: I just wanted to say that I thought your last sentence ( “As far as I was concerned, school couldn’t come fast enough.”) was totally and entirely adorable! Total YA romance-novel gold, hon! :D

So, what I’m saying about this chapter is: I liked it and I didn’t like it. You see that I have some mixed emotions about it. I didn’t not like this chapter; I just didn’t feel like it moved the story anywhere. There are a lot of possibilities to make it a great chapter, you’ve just got to think of them, but they might alter the future of your story’s plot, which you might not want at this point, in which case I would just cut this chapter. PM me when you post more if you want me to review again, I’d love to!! Or just PM if you want a friend or need anything!

Keep going, you’re doing great! You’ll make it, I promise! :D

Okay, so, I was just wondering... not even one thought about Max? What's up with that? Not even a tiny thought about giving up on him now that she likes somebody else?
Now, umm, I need to know why she isn't totally excited, jumping up and down and staring at her phone with more enthusiasm than any cheerleader alive could produce? Seriously. Maybe it's her character, but she's in the 7th grade, the boy she now likes text messages her, and all she can think about is... nail polish? Maybe it points to the future, of how she doesn't get that excited about him, but I don't know... I think that every average girl [and don't pretend she's not average] would be bursting with happiness, calling her bestfriend at once to ask what to say and share the good news, jumping up and down with a huge grin, you know, that kind of stuff. It seems much, much more likely, unless, again, you're trying to show a motive that keeps repeating itself- he gets flustered while she doesn't care. So, PM me for the next chapter!!!!
I love it!

Hey! :) Cynara here! Let's get started. The first thing I'm going to say is that it was too short. :x I'm not saying I like testaments or anything, but you should make your chapters longer. So we the readers can enjoy your work a little longer. Plus I agree with ofir, not one thought about Max? You need to make us doubt who is she going to stay at the end, make us salivate for more. Be evil make us suffer and have us guessing the hole way. Make her like both of them, but not be able to decide who she likes more (Just a thought here :) ). Also take it easy and slowly, think about your chapters more and were you want to take your story.

Thats all I got :).

Good luck!

PM me for next chapter.

Hey there youreit!!!! :D Yay(claps hands very childishly) :elephant: You did great. I loved this chapter (with capital letters)you can actually see how really cute Kale is and how cool Max plays it. Hmmm... who will she decide for? You're doing exactly what I wanted you to do (learn how to make people suffer and beg  ), you're leaving us in a, kinda, suspense (which I like a lot). Because now I'm actually thinking of who send her that note (I think it might be Max, but then again you're the writer and maybe your trying to confuse me. which is good.). I did see a few little errors, but those you can easily fix.

pm me (please I'm begging! ) for the next chapter.
