Sorry if its too long btw, please keep reading.
I sip my second latte quietly, swinging my left foot backwards and forwards underneath the table. My purple tights are slightly creased underneath my old leather boots, causing small annoying blisters to rise up against my heel.
This cafe is bringing back memories.
Most of them good, but the occasional bad one has found its way through the barriers protecting my mind from such thoughts. Memories are hard, it takes a stronger brain than mine, to figure how to make them lie to you.
I remember the first time I came here with Colin, I think it must have been our first date, or maybe second? Anyway, it was definitely the day we shared out first kiss...
I’d spent about twenty minutes sorting out my statick hair in the mirror, when I heard his quiet knock on the front door. Yes, this was our first date, because I remember I’d been gearing myself up towards it for three days, since we’d first met in that record shop up the road.
I started panicking then, I remember thinking-what if he changes his mind? It’s barely my luck to have the best looking guy in town ask me out within a week of living here!
I invited him in, whilst I ran upstairs to find my old leather jacket he’d complimented on Monday evening when we first met. When I came back downstairs he was perched awkwardly on the cream sofa, looking distractedly around at the various pictures we’d first unpacked to add a bit of colour to the otherwise neutral room.
He heard me come in, and quickly stood up and half heartedly stammered out, ‘Ginny... you look great!’
He was shy, though not as shy as I happened to be feeling at that moment. Nice of him to compliment me though, I didn’t actually look that great at all to be honest. Although I had for once actually managed to tame my hair into wavy red curls, running down to my waist. My hair gets in the way a lot, but I guess I see it as my one unusual feature, so I keep it that length.
He on the other hand, he looked absolutely heart-stoppingly gorgeous that day, his soft dark brown hair flicking across his face, framing his highly defined, beautiful cheekbones. His eyes though, now they were really something. The kind of eyes that a girl would just look into once, and be lost in forever. They had so many different colours in them, ranging from the darkest browns, to the softest yet fiery cinnamon oak, when he laughed, his eyes would sparkle reflecting a thousand different colours, like one of those crystals I hang in my window to catch the sunlight and throw pretty spectrums of light around my room.
My pulse quickened just looking at him, and I felt again what had hit me so hard on Monday. Now I’m not going to go all cliche, and say it was ‘love at first sight’, because that expression is so overused by overdramatic ‘in love’ thirteen year olds that it’s lost most of its meaning. But what I will say, is that from the first day I set eyes on that boy, he’s never vanished from my mind. Never.
‘Colin, so do you...’ I snapped out of my reverie, ‘Shall we go then? I’ll just give Mum a shout and well her I’m going...’ I wanted to be out of the house as quickly as I could.
Ten minutes later, we were sitting in here, on this very sofa actually. I was sipping my usual, a skinny latte, flashing him the occasional glance from underneath my eyelashes, he was staring intently into the dark Americano which he held in both hands. He appeared nervous, but his eyes gave him away, he had a game plan.
‘So uhm, how come I haven’t seen you round here before? I’m not likely to have missed a girl like you in the street.’ He glanced slyly but flirtily at me from the corner of his eye.
‘No you haven’t. I just moved here from Chester, in Wales. Family lived down here, my Dad lost his job up there. Seemed to make sense us moving.’ To my parents at least. I had raised hell when I found out how far we would be moving away from all my friends. Of course, I hadn’t thought I’d find a guy this amazing, this quickly.
He glanced up at me then, chuckling quietly under his breath.
‘Did I say something funny?’ I was confused.
‘No you didn’t, I was just thinking you reminded me of someone I know... But never mind. So tell me, leave any special guy behind? Any six foot rugby player, who’ll thrash my lights out if I so much as look at his girlfriend, that I should know about?’ He must be kidding me. The last guy I dated, last year, was such a bastard he’d put me off dating for ages. Not the kind of guy that would look out for his girlfriend.
‘Ha, no one special, you’re safe in that respect.’
‘Good to know, you know, just in case... like you know... never mind’ He never was that confident with girls. ‘But you moved down half way through the year, won’t your GCSE’s get messed up?’
In the next hour, we learnt so much about each other, from our favourite subject, to childhood pets, to what music we liked, ambitions, past relationships. I told him a bit about my writing, in return he shared his interest in playing guitar and motorbikes with me.
Whilst we were talking, we slowly moved closer and closer together on the sofa, and before I really noticed, he had his hand rested a few inches above my knee, and I was stroking it absentmindedly.
‘Come on we better go, they want to shut!’ He grabbed my hand and pulled me up and with his arm round my waist guided me out of what was to become our favourite cafe.
We walked round the pretty city Bath was for another half an hour, then when I realised I had been due home twenty minutes before.
Fifteen minutes later, we were standing in front of my door. I was just finding my key, but I didn’t want to go, he had his arms round my waist. He didn’t want me to go either. My heart melted into deep pools of liquid love and satisfaction.
‘ I’d invite you in, but....’
‘Don’t worry hon, wouldn’t want to piss off your mum on our first date!’ he laughed beautifully again, ‘After all, I can see you again tomorrow right?’ Then he suddenly looked desperate, his eyes bright yet almost scared...
I happily agreed to that, and we arranged to meet halfway between our schools at four o clock the next day.
As we said our goodbyes, he pulled me into an embrace, and I could feel both our hearts beating in time. I lifted my head to look into his eyes, where I could see how much this meant to both of us. He caressed my face with his soft hands, and suddenly, I realised exactly how much I wanted to feel those hands on me, to hold him, for him to kiss me, for him to love me...
As his soft, trembling lips found his way to my half open mouth that night, I knew he was going to be special.
Thanks for reading if you got down this far!
