I've decided to post another chapter, although I'm still nervous about this. :) I actually want to get it published haha, and so I don't know if this is wise, but I want to show my characters aren't cliche since they kind of came off like that in the first chapter. Please review!

Revelations

What do you think of when you hear about fairy tales? Do you think of Cinderella, Snow White, or Beauty and the Beast? Do you think of those happy Disney tales of love and perfectly happily ever after? Most do, but do you ever think of anything dark? Anything…deadly?

~*~

“And who was that exactly?” My dad asked as soon as I slammed the door. I rolled my eyes and slipped off my sandals.

“It was someone I literally ran in to. He felt he owed me a ride home,” I replied. He gave me an unsure look.

“You look…damp,” he said awkwardly. I nodded.

“Yeah, that’s what happens when you get stuck out in the rain,” I said, a little too surly, even for my liking.

“Well… don’t catch a cold,” he said, and with that he returned to his laptop. My dad was, well, he was just my dad. I never really understood him. He seemed to get beaten down so badly, but in public, his head was held so high that you would’ve thought he had won the Nobel. I just…could never really get a read on him. For anyone else, I could. Usually I read a person like I did a book. But sometimes, that didn’t work. My dad was the perfect example, and really, Luke was in the category of unreadable too.

I trudged up the spiral staircase to my bedroom. I could hear the unsteady noise of dad’s laptop just below, and I had to shut my door. My room was perfect for me; it was a beautiful mix of light blues and greens and white. It was very large, so it held roughly all of my life. I switched on the TV as I took off my damp clothing.

I sat there on my bed, a warm blanket wrapped around me, my papers spread about my feet, with Luke’s card hiding somewhere in the mess. My wet hair chilled me, so I pulled it up and back into a tight bun, but I knew it wouldn’t last long; my hair just didn’t like to cooperate.

There really wasn’t anything good on so I flipped the channel to E News for some background noise. The top ten stories of the day were on, but I didn’t really pay any attention. Instead, I grabbed my blue sketchbook and a graphite pencil and pondered what to sketch. Maybe, I thought, if I sketch his face, I’ll remember him.

Like you’ll forget him, my own conscious replied. At the time I was with him, I just felt annoyed, but looking back, he was so nice, so sweet, so…perfect.

I started sketching his eyes, Indian looking with wisdom radiating out of their depths. Next came his nose, strong and straight, and then came his mouth, set in a big grin. I drew his chin, so as to give the face some proportion and then sketched the outlines of his ears. Then his skull was complete, so I moved on to the baseball cap, complete with all those dark black hairs. To finish it off, I drew a well built neck and added his thick eyelashes, which I had forgotten in my fervor.

I looked back at the replication, and decided it was my best piece, which was really saying something considering I’d had some of my artwork published. I decided to leave it as a sketch, and not color it in. It seemed so life-like that I just sat there, staring at him, Luke Austin. Why was that name so familiar? I knew it from somewhere. In fact, I think I’d heard dad say the name Austin quite a few times. Well, Austin can be a first name too, I thought. Still, I swore that I’d heard him say it as a last name.

I grabbed my laptop, a pair of shorts, and a hoodie. After I changed, I booted up the computer, and decided to type “Austin” in on Google search. The Texan city came up first, but after I scrolled down I started getting names. Austin Starr was the first name to actually appear, then Austin Richards, and finally Austin Malloy. I went to IMDB and typed in all three but only Austin Malloy came up as someone who’d been in a movie. A single movie. There’s no way dad would be talking about this guy, I thought, laughing at the picture of a roughly forty-year old man with a slight unibrow and a rather large overbite that filled my screen.

So, Austin had to be a last name. I could type in Luke Austin, I thought, but what if it’s his father or mother or sister or brother that’s famous? Then I realized that had to be it; that could be how he had seemed so familiar. I couldn’t believe I was so stupid. That’s when I remembered a rather handsome older man, around mid-forties, starring in a ton of movies. He had light blonde hair, turning slightly grey and blue eyes, and I swore his last name was Austin. I decided I was just being stupid and should type in Luke’s name, just in case.

I turned on the TV’s sound and listened about another star being getting a DUI, basically nothing surprising. I typed in Luke’s name in IMDB and waited for it to load. His picture was there. Could he really be famous, I wondered. I clicked on his picture just as the television was changing to the next story.

“And today’s top story is about the youngest Austin! It turns out, this rising new star and his father, one of the greatest actors of all time, are starring in a movie together! Yes, that’s right; Luke Austin and his father Brian Austin are starring in Nobody’s Tomorrow! Here’s an interview we snatched from the Red Carpet,” the news anchor said. My mouth dropped in disbelief. There was Luke on screen and on the computer, and I held up my picture to compare. They were perfect matches, each smiling exactly the same. I dropped the picture suddenly and it fell softly into the piles of blankets.

“I’m so excited to work with my father. He gave me a new life when I was younger and now I hope that I can show him all of my appreciation. I thank all of my fans who’ve continued on with me since my early teens, and now I hope they’ll enjoy the best movie this year!” Luke’s face then disappeared and his father, the man that I had pictured, started talking for a moment, but my mind wasn’t focused on that at all.

He must think I’m the dumbest person in the world, I thought angrily. I searched my bed for the card, finding it after a second. There was nothing odd about the design, and I ran my fingers over it, feeling the damp edges, from the rain, and the crisp center. I twisted my fingers through my hair, the short pieces falling out of the bun. If I called the number, would I get him? I wondered.

“Emma, do you need dinner or anything?” Dad said through the intercom system. The noise surprised me, like always, and I pressed the button.

“No thanks. I’m actually going to bed soon, so I’ll see you tomorrow,” I replied, sighing heavily.

“Everything alright?” He asked.

“Yes dad,” I said. He just sighed.

“Alright. Night hon.” Our conversation was over. I fell back onto my pillows, my bangs covering my eyes. I blew a strand out of my face and held my cell phone gently. No, I thought, there’s no way you’re going to call him. Then I had an idea.

Hey. It’s Emma, I texted. I waited for what seemed like forever, but it was only a minute. My screen lit up, “Luke Austin calling.” He was calling me? I didn’t know what to do.

“Hello?” I said, questioning if it was really him. In fact I was waiting for someone to say, “This is Luke’s rejection hotline, you suck at life, please, never call or text again!”

“Hey Em, you texted?” It was his voice alright. What was this? Because, if it was a joke, it definitely wasn’t funny.

“Yeah I texted, but apparently you can’t,” I said, actually laughing slightly. It was nerves, all the way.

“It’s not for me. I prefer the good old-fashioned, over-the-phone way of communication,” he replied. It sounded like he was almost making fun of himself.

“You know, phones aren’t that old,” I said, laughing slightly.

“Alright, whatever, so why’d you call? You know I didn’t think you would. You
looked like you were ready to punch me,” he said. I could see his smile, flashing in the lightning.

“Well, I felt you owed me. And maybe that’s why I’m calling you, so next time I see you I can straight up slap you,” I mischievously said.

“Oh really? That doesn’t exactly make me want to take you out to a five star restaurant,” he retorted, “And what did I do to deserve such behavior? I thought I was rather chivalrous.”

“You left me with questions. That’s just not fair,” I replied. Where was this person from? I’d always been on the shy side of life, but it was like a new person was bursting out from me, ready to fly into the world.

“I see, well we’ll have to change that, now won’t we?” I could definitely see his grin now. No one said anything for a second.

“Is your dad opposed to trips?” He asked. I thought for a second. If dad knew I was going somewhere with Luke Austin, he’d be thrilled; it could bring him publicity.

“I don’t think so,” I replied.

“Well, pack your bags. You’re going to Hollywood. I’ve got someone who needs a friend, or so her publicist says, and I think I know the perfect person,” he said softly

“You’re going to make me a fake friend for someone?” I asked, instinctively raising my eyebrow, even though he wasn’t actually there.

“I’ll explain later, just pack your bags, and tell you dad you’re leaving two days from now,” he said.

“Okay, this should be interesting,” I said. I heard him sigh.

“You don’t know how interesting it will be, mostly for me. It’ll probably be torture for you, though,” he joked, and I laughed in reply.

“And you think I’m kidding…” he continued.

“Oh whatever,” I said, “I’ll talk to you later.”

“You’re ridiculous. Good bye,” he said.

“You can’t just end a phone call like that,” I protested.

“Well too bad, Princess, I just did,” he said with a laugh, and with that I heard a dial tone.

(Don't worry about that too much, while on the road to publishing you'll edit and revise so much that it will be quite a bit different.

again I like the intro

Like you’ll forget him, my own conscious replied. At the time I was with him, I just felt annoyed, but looking back, he was so nice, so sweet, so…perfect.

Never use the word perfect. Never ever ever.

I started sketching his eyes, Indian looking with wisdom radiating out of their depths. Next came his nose, strong and straight, and then came his mouth, set in a big grin. once again I applaud your description.

“Alright, whatever, so why’d you call? You know I didn’t think you would. You

I'm a bit confused about her seeing his smile in the lightning

:D Ok this was better, and I can safely say that so far they have more personality then Edward and Bella. It's good for a romance genre, and if you truly have a good twist then I can definitely see it getting published.

I do think you're moving a little fast. Real life doesn't work like that. No one bumps into someone on the street and in that same day plan a road trip together. That makes your character seem a bit too trusting, and a bit desperate. So I suggest you extend it a little. Make it happen over a few days, not less then a hour.

I question the relation your character has with her father, I hope he actually disciplines and doesn't act like she's the adult. Is it just me or does she have very little respect for her father. She rolled her eyes and is quite abrupt and cold with her conversations with him. This can be good or bad, if done for a reason this could be good. If she just looks down on him then I'd say bad.

If there is another element to this, magical or whatever it is you should lay better hints and foreshadows. Because the hand thing in the previous chapter is too subtle. You have to continue to lay in nuggets or the people will forget about it. If this happens one of two things can happen. One the person that expected something, will get board. Or the person that gets caught up in the romance will be thrown off guard by the sudden shift. My point is have more hints. Granted this is the only second chapter, but like I said before you need to extend their time together before they go off together so do it then.

Note this is all my opinion, on top of that it's the opinion of someone that generally hates romance in fiction and in real life. So you have to take all my comments with a grain of salt.

Anyway really good, keep up the good work.
