Chapter 2
The sun shown through his broken window; it’s rays caught the dew hanging from the tips of shattered glass. He curled deep into his tattered blankets and wished that an education wasn’t necessary to his future. After debating if he should bother showing up or not he hoisted himself off his mattress and went to his closet to get dressed, lifted a pair of black jeans and a 1UP t-shirt and slipped them on. He had managed to take a shower the night before while his mother was passed out on the couch so he washed his face and brushed his teeth. He fought his way through the tangled brown locks that fell to his shoulders; brushing his hair had always been a task of great patience. Looks had never been his top priority, no one looked at him anyway, so he never did much else to improve on his appearance. The pickup was no longer in the driveway across the street as it had been the day before; there was still a small trailer in the front full of miscellaneous belongings of the new family. In a way he felt sorry for the family; they had no clue what they were getting themselves into, if they were used to a fluffy life where the neighbors check in, they would be shocked as to what was in their future. Drive bys, domestic violence, rape, murder, the list of misfortunes went on and on; this was a neighborhood for the poor, the lost, and the broken families; all problems could be found here and they weren’t hard to look for.
As he walked slowly down the street the vision of the girl he had seen the Friday before kept intruding his thought; he was attached to her for a reason announced to him. He couldn’t help but recall a strange dream he had ventured into the night before. The feeling that things might be changing weighed on his heart, but what held his thought, even more, was the fact that things would be changing because of him. Somewhere close to him there was something that he had to do, someone that he had to save, of course, he had no idea who could possibly look to him for safety.
He was walking down a hallway in some undefined place completely unfamiliar to him; the walls were painted black and the tiles on the floor looked as if blood had been strewn across it‘s surface. One foot fell after the other; he didn’t walk slumped over as he usual did, instead he held his head high and stood tall as if given a new persona all together. The hall was long, seemingly never ending, only two large doors stood in the distance. Adam wondered on towards them intently; as he grew closer he discovered that the doors were far more complex then those of the average ones of the houses on his block. They were constructed of glass mirrors set in a frame of gold vines, large roses composed of ruby set neatly in it’s intertwining. He stopped only a moment to look at himself; he peered into his own lucid eyes, in this place they were brilliant and engaging. He reached out one cautious hand to the golden handle; when he touched it his heart started to beat faster and his hands began to tremble. The space behind these doors contained some type of unknown beauty; a life changing event lingered on the other side though he was unsure of what. However, he knew it was wonderful; the fear of uncertainty and mystery held him there for only a moment gawking at himself. He took in a deep breath telling himself he was the only one that held the key to the mysteries on the other side. He grasped the handle glancing at the mirror one last time, but the vision in the mirror was not his own, instead of his reflection he saw that of a girl his own age. She lay in the center of the room behind the doors, a pool of blood encircled her once white dress. She was silent and alone; her occasional cries rang out, propelling themselves of the tall pillars that held up the sky above her. Adam yanked on the handle once again but the door was locked. His heart stopped only for a second; he turned and searched desperately for something that he could break the glass with. This was no longer curiosity, he was too involved now, he had no choice but to save her. After searching for a few slow moments he discovered there was nothing for him to use other then his own hands. With all of his might he thrust his large fist into the glass. It shattered out around him, into an explosion of a million pieces, before they had the chance to collide with the floor he stormed into the room. A rush of cold air was there to greet him.
There she was; he approached her slowly, every step he took rang out around him. This beautiful creature was small, with the face of a porcline doll, he didn’t want to supply her more pain as she seemed to only be holding on to life by a fragile thread. A knife lay at her side, it’s handle was gold and the blade long; the tip of the steal was masked with crimson. He knelt down in front of her and looked into her pale face; all color had retreated from her high Native American cheek bones. Her eyes were closed, but she was breathing. Her chest was barely moving under her dress; the fabric hugged her tightly held by crimson ribbon that laced down her chest to her stomach, the skirt fell loosely over her lifeless legs. Even though she was pale and looked almost dead she was still beautiful in a ghostly way. He reached out his hand to her cheek and brushed a strand of long jet black hair back from her eyes. She was so cold. His white pant legs were now stained at the hem with the same crimson that marked the floor and the tile of the hall that lead him here.
He scooped her up into his resilient arms; she was light as if she truly was the porcline doll her face portrayed, he held her with great care for fear she might break if he dropped her. Just as he lifted her fragile body from the floor she opened her eyes. Few words came from her full lips, but these words held more meaning then any Adam had heard in all of his life
“Thank you Adam. Thank you for loving me.” Her voice was soft but strong; as the eight simple words rolled from her blue lips she closed her sapphire eyes again and he carried her down the hallway into the light.
Adam had never had a dream such as this before and it haunted him now. Everything about it had been so real; as if he had saved her from something so much bigger, so much more evil then he had ever experienced. In truth, he loved her and he had only meet her the night before in her weakest state; after all, she was only a dream. She was only a wish and a fantasy that would never come true for him; things like that didn’t happen for boys like him.
Adam went through the day like any other, occasionally replaying the dream in his mind, trying to define what it could possibly mean. Perhaps in some imaginary world he might find this girl; he might have the chance to save her after all but this was the real world and things like that just didn’t happen. The final bell rang and he made his way towards the main doors as always thankful to see the sun that had been hidden from him by the dark of the school. Just as he passed a set of lockers a muscular boy and his jockey friends came bolting down the hall. In their haste a girl making her way down the hall became the victim of their adolescence. A loud crash rang against the walls as she slammed into the lockers; everything that she had been holding now fluttered to the floor spreading out beneath the feet of the passing students. If it had been any other day Adam would have kept walking, not wanting to get involved but there was something invoked by the dream that compelled him to help. He waited for the crowd to pass then followed the trail of papers to the girl where she knelt still against the lockers. True, this was a big step for him but he wasn’t quite brave yet so he didn’t dare look her in the face.
“Are you ok?” He held the girls math homework in his hands.
“Ya, I will be fine I think. I’ve taken worse hits then that.” She giggled a little; he had heard that voice somewhere.
“Are you sure, that looked like it hurt.”
“ I’m sure. I can take it. Thank you for all your help. A lot of the egotistical jerks that go to this run down daycare wouldn’t even look at me; much less get down on their hands and knees and help me. It means a lot.” The tone was different but edged with a sorrow that ran deep, deep enough to have once been the voice of the girl in the room.
“ No problem.” They stood at the same time throwing each other off balance; Adam reached out a hand to keep her from falling again. In doing so he couldn’t help but look her in the eyes. Now he was certain that he had seen her before; she was the girl from his dream. Her eyes were like diamonds; they were the most beautiful he had ever seen in his life. That’s why he had helped her, that’s why he had known the voice.
“Are you ok? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” He looked blankly back at her unable to find the words to answer her question. Stuttering he gave his excuse to leave.
“Um… I , I have to go.”
“Ok. Was it something I said?”
“No I just have to get home now.”
“Well ok. I will see you around then?” A confused smile spread across her face as she turned to walk away. Why had he let her go; she was right there! The girl that was literally from his dreams had been close enough to touch and he let her walk away. He knew that he had had no chance in the first place but it was nice to imagine himself, some brave young man that would take a risk and ask her to be his. He was beginning to regret losing his chance with the angel that he had encountered. Why did he have to be who he was; why did he have to be so scared to reach for what he wanted.
