Rose
It was neither strong, nor beautiful, it withered in the wind.
If anyone should wander there, they would but pass it by.
Never was it noticed. Never was it seen.
But doomed to sit there always, gazing at the sky.
Forever dreaming of a world, outside its forest cage.
A rose, created to be beautiful, if not, what is it worth?
Longing for a chance, longing for some change.
No matter how it strives, it cannot uproot the earth.
While the forest into slumber crept, the Rose was wide awake.
Stars up in the sky above, bright as the sun at noon.
Staring deep into the depths of space, when something caught her eye,
And it was on this mid-summer’s night that she met the Moon.
So subtle was its gentle light, she almost did not see
Then as she gazed upon its face its brightness slowly grew.
“Why weren’t you in my life?” she cried; He answered with a smile,
“You might not have known but here I’ve been watching over you.”
From that night on the Rose would wait for fire to burn out.
For stars to come and bring with them, a friendly loving face.
But her vast amounts of happiness always had a shade of grey,
As dawn approached he must retreat back into outer space.
Weeks quickly passed and in that time their friendship grew to love.
Every night they would converse and every morning part.
Confidence he helped her gain, against all of the odds.
Until one night he failed to meet her, and quite neatly broke her heart.
Twice more the stars came out to shine and left the moon behind.
Twice more the Rose stared at the sky and tried hard not to cry.
As the sun sank down behind the ground Rose whispered to the stars,
“Please bring my love with you tonight and save me an unlit sky!”
The heavens heard her whisper, they took pity on her pain
The moon they thrust out of hiding, to face what he had made.
He said not a word as he slowly stuck his head around the bend,
To hear her cry, “Oh love, thank god, how I was so afraid!”
“Stay with me, for if you leave I swear that I shall die!”
He said, “Rose what do you know of death, what do you know of pain?”
The anger filling his eyes turned quickly to despair,
“Please tell me Rose what do you know of true love’s sweet refrain?”
Clearly hurt she was by his uttered words, so he hastened to explain.
“Rose how dearly do I love you, yet I know it cannot be.”
“You are rooted to the ground as I’m bound to the night sky”
“However much we want it there shall never be a you and me.”
He said his piece but did not turn, could not pull himself away.
This revelation hit them like a bullet in the heart.
When every moment may be your last, it’s best to leave behind.
They knew it to be true but neither one could bear to part.
They would have stayed forever, but fate would not let it be.
It sent its cold and heartless messenger to handle them quietly
Rose could feel it coming, the Earth freezing in her roots.
But she held on for one more day, fighting desperately.
As the first snow fell she gave up; gave in.
Cold quickly crept along her frame, sucking life up as it went.
Her petals floated to the ground as she looked towards the sky.
“Promise me you’ll smile love and save the world from your lament.”
“They need you now, as I once did, so do not disappoint.
and do not worry love, for I will join you in the sky.”
Soft rays of moonlight hit her in a final parting kiss
“Until we meet again; goodbye love, goodbye.”
