My last day of school in the ninth grade was stressful, chaotic and mean. I can only blame myself for involving myself with him. Here is how it went:
I was hanging out with Jane at lunch and we were walking past the ninth grade boys lockers to get outside for some air. Jack and two of his 'friends' were hanging around their lockers.
"Oh look it's Callie, hey didn't I see you at the park with her yesterday?" Eric said to Jack.
He didn't answer.
"Wait a minute, are you like. . . friends with her? I mean don't get me wrong dude she's hot but what were you thinking?," Eric said. This time, Jack looked up and laughed.
"No way. I was just bored and you know whenever I want something from her I just have to say the word and get a little action," He said. What a jerk! I thought to myself.
He had no idea we were both standing behind him when he was talking, or should I say, dissing us.
"They're both just a couple of nerds with more books than friends," he said, with Fred and Eric (His football mates) cheering him on and laughing wildly around him. It didn't seem that funny to me.
I refused to let him get to me. I was stronger than that. I was stronger than him. I didn't give into peer pressure, ever.
As I was walking past him, obviously from behind him, he was shocked.
"Well um, maybe you could get a little action somewhere else," I said with satisfaction.
His face was priceless. He just stood there with his mouth hanging open. The whole thing would have been comical if I hadn't been a little upset.
Jane and I just walked out with that. We sat outside on the sky blue bench in the glittering sun. Jane looked at me her icy eyes concerned.
"I thought you guys were friends," she said to me. Warm wind blew her soft, brown hair back, making her look like she was posing for a modeling magazine.
"I thought so too. . ." I sighed. I looked up at the clear blue sky. I was starting to feel it now. I felt a pang of hurt run through my body. The sweet summer air suddenly felt bitter and deceiving.
"You shouldn't talk to him for a while, just to teach him a lesson," she said. She was right, and that was exactly what I was going to do.
"Oh I'll teach him a lesson alright," I said to her in a determined voice. I looked down, playing with my hands as I felt blood rush to my pale cheeks.
"What do you have in mind?" She asked looking curious. Frown lines appeared on her forehead, as if disapproving something she thought I was thinking.
"Guilt trip," I laughed. She laughed too.
"We better get back inside. Aw crap don't you have English with him now?" She asked me with a sympathetic face. Her eyes were soft, despite it wasn't that big a deal.
"Yeah. I know what to do. I'll catch you later sometime OK?" I left after that and went straight to English class.
I took my seat like other students did. The difference was, they were all taking seats beside their script rehearsal partners. I refused to sit beside Jack, or even look at him.
"Callie, Jack please take your correct seats please," our teacher told us. But I wouldn't.
"Uh Ms. I actually feel sick. . ." I said. I was surprised at how good I was at lying. This was desperate measures though, if I had to lie to a teacher to avoid Jack then I would.
"Oh, alright then. here take a sickbay pass and tell them I sent you," she said kindly. Unusual for her to be this nice, or believe me. Maybe she was suspicious but understood where I was coming from? Or not.
I walked out of the class and as I was leaving Jack looked at me, his brown eyes regretful. I didn't care. I gave him a dirty look and left.
I sat there in sick bay until the bell went to go home. When it did, I went straight to my locker and collected what books I needed for homework so I wouldn't chance bumping into Jack. It didn't work.
Just as I was about to leave he came up outside my locker.
"Get out of my way," I said in a harsh tone. I looked down in case I might blush. Even if I was mad at him, he seemed to have that effect on me.
"Callie I know you're mad, but can you please let me explain before you march off stubbornly?," He said. His voice was sorrowful, I would almost believe it if I didn't have experience with his kind.
"There is no explaining to do. "I thought you were a nice guy you know? I actually believed it for a second. Thanks for making me realise I was wrong," I said. I wouldn't back down to him today.
I was walking fast to get out, but he was keeping pace. It was frustrating.
"I know I acted like a jerk. I'm sorry alright?. I don't know why I did it. I felt like they were taunting me," he said with a flustered look on his perfect features. Convincing but no.
"Ah peer pressure. Now why don't I understand it? Oh yes because I'm not enough of a jerk to give into it for the purpose of looking cool. Guess what Jack? That's what makes people lose friends," I snapped.
"Callie please. I'm sorry! I don't want to lose you over it, please," he pleaded huskily. He put his hand on my shoulder, I shrugged it off.
"Get off of me! I have dealt with people like you and I'm not going there again. I don't need your apologies, I don't need your chaos and I don't need you!" I said.
"Maybe not, what can I say I'm weak. But I need you. . ." He said. His face was red. As if that were true.
"Oh please! I think you are quite content with all those pigs criticizing you as long as it makes you popular right? All those girls who would line up for hours just to talk to you. You don't need me Jack, and I don't need you," I said. My voice was serious.
"Callie you know that's not true, and maybe if you would open up to somebody just once you would realise that you need me too," he said.
He didn't get it. It didn't matter if I did or didn't, it wasn't the point. I never wanted to like someone, I never wanted to get hurt. I wasn't like a lot of people. It wasn't me to open up to people either, now he was turning it on me?
I began walking away. Hot and bothered by his choice of words.
"Callie. . ." He said huskily.
"Just leave me alone," I told him as I walked to my car. I couldn't be bothered with people like that. they are all the same. That ninety percent of people. The populars.
The next two days when I seen him around in town and everything, things went no better. Neither of us would talk, it was me more than anything. Every time I walked past him there would be a sort of cold tensity. I didn't like it. But, it was his fault for being a jerk.
When I got home, I went to go straight up stairs, but my dad stopped me.
"Are you OK Callie?" He said. I was in no mood for him. He never paid attention to me before, why was now so different?
"I'm fine," I snapped. I know my problems weren't his fault, but I was feeling crap.
"You don't look fine," he said.
"Gees thanks Dad, you don't ever pay attention to me so why are you bothering pretending now?" I said and then I marched up the stairs and slammed the door of my bedroom. I could hear him calling me down stairs but I ignored.
After a couple of hours of lingering around in my room, I decided to go to sleep early. I just kept thinking about what Jack said to me, and I wondered if he was right....you need me too... he had said.
I heard tapping at my window, so I went over and opened it, still wearing my pink night dress.
Who was standing out on my lawn in the dark with a stereo in his arms only Jack. Of course. How typical. This was exactly the kind of thing you would see in a movie and exactly the kind of thing I would usually avoid. However, I wasn't complaining, despite how mad I was.
He turned it on and sang.
"I want you to want me, I need you to need me, I'd love you to love me, Oh I need you to need me..." Etc. He went on. I couldn't help smiling. My anger didn't begin to fade though. Any boy who is willing to go out on some body's lawn singing has got to have guts, but must be a fool to think I was in-capable of standing my ground.
"I'm sorry, " he said simply. As if I would forget just like that? I liked him, he made me think he liked me too. Was I really that much of an idiot to forgive him after just three days?
"Jack just go," I said sighing. I could smell his scent. Sweet, like pine trees. I would know that scent anywhere. "I can't be around you, I mean it Jack. Don't you ever realise you can't just click your fingers and get what you want all the time? You know, as much as I really thought you were different, I think I was wrong. You can't take responsibility for once. I just have to say something to you that I think everybody has been avoiding. You're too selfish to put one person's feelings above your own, no matter how many friends you lose. It's been like three days Jack, do you really think I am that much of a sap that I would just fall into the palm of your hands when you say so?" I said.
I was a bit tired from saying it because those things didn't just spring to my mind, they came from the heart, which I rarely open.
"Alright then. I guess you are right. But I'm not giving up. No matter what, I may be selfish and conceded, a jerk. . . but I am not a quitter Callie. I intend on proving that to you," he said seriously.
"Well then, don't hold your breath," I said coldly. I was now wishing I hadn't opened the window.
He left and after a while of pondering in my useless thoughts, I surrendered and allowed myself to drift to sleep. I was going to Mike's party in a week with Jane, I knew I would see him there, but it just made me more determined not to let him get to me. Unless he could prove to me, god knows how, that he was who he said he was, there was no way I was taking him back. . . at all.
