I believe that every creature, every living thing, in fact, knows instinctively what it is supposed to be, what it is supposed to do. A lion who has never known the savanna will long to run in the fields, and eagle that has never known the sky will long to feel the wind, way up high. Even people, know with some restless feeling that this is not what we were meant to be. They long to feel the earth under their feet, as they run, and the wind in their hair, they long to taste the cold mountain air, the fresh water, untouched by society. Most people ignore these feelings, though once in a while you will find someone who has taken to moving, looking for their home, their true place. Everything, has a place, a plant in the wrong environment will wither away and die. just as people, in the wrong environment will never be truly happy.
Most people have forgotten how to listen to the world. They never hear the warnings the earth gives, and they go on their merry way, destroying the world, and themselves. There is another way, actually a hundred thousand more ways, and the door to them, is but to look, to listen. look at the world, the different parts of nature, and try to forget that it is "just a tree" or "just a rock" "just a blade of grass" anything, really, try to forget what you have been told, and see what these things really are. each one has its own place in the chain of cosmic events, and each one is drastically important.
Along these lines, for my entire life, I have felt an insatiable urge to travel, across an ocean, to set foot on the shore of Scotland. I have felt this desire, at different times it has different strengths, different intensities, and even a different mood to it, but it is always there. Sometimes, is is a general urge to just move, away from the towns, the cities, out to the places untouched by civilization, but the ultimate destination remains constant sometimes it is subtle, and I can go about my day as normal, but sometimes it is overpowering, and it is all I can do not to just get up and go. I have theories about what this is, to me, what it means. Perhaps it is only the echoes of my ancestors, calling me back to the land they had come from.
If one listens, one can hear the voices of the centuries gone by, whispering on into eternity. If you would but listen to the voices, you could here them tell the history of the world. The natural things on this earth, once you learn to hear them, will tell you things that have been forgotten by civilization for thousands of years. They will tell you what is wrong, and what has been changed. If you would but listen to them, they will impart on you the secrets of the world, those secrets that you will never find in a science book or holy text. The true secrets of life.
