Them

I worte this very quickly, but i think it is something that needs to be said.

There’s a million of “Them” in the world, but only one you.

“They” are those who choose to think in groups. They chose to follow pop culture down to the last scrap of clothing. Their souls are empty, nothing else but an empty shell. They dye their hair, and wear way too much make up. They don’t even know what they look like.

They are powerless when exposed to peer pressure. Alcohol, drugs, cigarettes are something that anyone in their right minds would avoid. In order to fit in though, they try them, they get addicted to them, and then they lose all the dignity they had left. Their need to fit in has driven them to debt and shortened life span.

Are you one of them? Or do you still know what you stand for? We all only have one life and the need to be popular can make or break you.

Just stand up and let your opinion be heard. Stand out because not one person on this damned earth is actually normal. Yet we all strive to be normal. We might as well chase unicorns and ride rainbows because no one is normal.

No one is perfect.

Why ruin yourself trying to be one of “Them”, when you can be yourself?

I couldn't agree more with you in some things you said here... I don't know is it a review needed here.... ???

They think as a group? haha..nice said... I have many friends that are "cool" and I make fun of them for that even if they are "in the group" at the moment...
Oh, and the alcohol, cigarettes and drugs...I use them also (drugs rarely, almost never) but that doesn't makes me one of them. I use it cause I want and yes, I am addicted and yes, it's slowly hurting me...so what? You said that we have just one life...:)

You have very small number of grammar mistakes (punctuation)...

This was refreshing from all those poems I've read today. It's like a mini essay... Was this your homework or something???

You brought up a really good point. It just makes me wonder, is this a cry to a friend? If so, I think it was a well-written cry of concern and desperation.

I'm in a class similar to the subject of your blurb, and it's quite refreshing to relieve yourself of all the worries such as the ones you listed above. After that class, and your piece, I definitely know where I stand. It was a good refresher. So thank you. :D

This is really vibrant, awakening piece, maybe not the most original but by far, very well pulled off. I'm not much for spotting grammar errors though one did grab me.

Stand out because not one person one this...

I think you meant "one person on"

However, I would be a hypocrite and a liar if I said I've never used alcohol (actually, just this weekend things got a little crazy) and I've been smoking sense I was 12. But those were never peer pressure things, they were always more of "I need a way to fight my father and my family" things.

And as I start to get emotional and rambly, I'm just gonna end it by saying it was good and congrats.
Never forget who you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.

You really make a good point. We all have one life and we have to choose what we do to ourselves and with ourselves on this journey. I think there are some people I know who need to read this piece, it might yank them back to reality for a bit, but in the end, most of them will again succumb to the popular culture and its impacts on things.
Like girls thinking they have to have a boyfriend will succumb to his bad-idea pleads at having...well, you know what, and they will end up being pregnant at fifteen or something.
I know how it is to be one of those people who are sitting in no group, and lately, I've realized how I don't fit in anywhere. I'm what you could call a very unusual person.
I have severe Tourette's, which is really making my life one crazy roller coaster ride.
One minute I am feeling pretty normal, able to be quiet, to be still, the next I'm punching myself in the head and screaming obscenities. I've had a big load-of-bricks kind of awakening--I shout profanity in public now for the reason that I literally cannot help it, and lately I've quit caring what people think of me. If they turn away because of their first impression, they're gonna miss out on meeting me, because on the inside, I am still me. I'm still the same girl who cares about science and ethics and the girl on the inside does not want to be yelling swear words, but for some reason scientists don't understand, my brain screws up and makes me yell swear words. I think if more people had that kind of self-image crisis, the world would be better off. I've accepted that I can't help it, if somebody gets mad at me, that's their problem, not mine, I don't need them if they can't slow down long enough to figure out I'm not retarded or something. I've taken it upon myself to speak for Tourette's. Because it's so little understood by anyone but those that have it and their relatives/friends. So I'm not really a part of any group. I'm me, I like myself and think people do stupid stuff because they think it is the only way to go because others are pressuring them.

Very powerful story. I've been fighting about this topic with myself forever. I'm always the one that stands out. Always the one that has maybe a few friends, them being 'weird' also. I've always tried to be normal until one day I finally asked myself 'What is normal? Is normal being like bland and boring or is it about being like everyone else?' In today's world I feel its, to some, a crime to be different.

I later realized, through messageboards, that we are normal to ourselves. If we're a bunch of eccentric oddballs then so be it. You're only abnormal if you convince yourself that you're abnormal. I have many oddities. Deep voice, deeper than most females my age, stuttering problem, love of odd things (think Tim Burton-style things to give yourself a better vision of me), and I don't think before I speak a lot of the time. All of those I can't control....too good. With my deep voice I try to speak louder (not so much in a mumbling form that I usually speak in) but it hurts my voice. Sorry for my lecture. That's another of my bad habits.

Also (I'll stop after this) I've realized that laughing at myself seems to boast my self-esteem.
One person's craziness is another person's reality
-Tim Burton

They need to fit in has driven them to debt and shortened life span.

Did you mean "Their need?"

I agree with the people above me, that was a great story. I know a lot of "them" myself and reading this is like a reminder not to get carried away, and that you don't always have to be part of the "in" crowd.

Thank you for this, I wouldn't change it, I think it's perfect the way it is :) (Minus the grammar mistakes :P)

First, let me say that all the commments I made tonight were grumpy and contrary to opinion.
I don't agree with what you wrote. I don't believe we there are such things as souless creatures. Example? My ex-friend called me one day, to make up about a fight nearly a year ago, and even though she was a popular make-up wearing, hair-dying person very much in tune with mainstream ideas, i found out that she liked dorky belts and different colored shoes, and absoloutely adored harry potter. How's that for "them."
Saying that everyone is different is true; it is someting we should be proud of. Scorning others because they LOOK and SPEAK like they are part of a mold is unfair. They have a soul; they have a favorite ice cream flavor. Just make sure that while you are standing up and shouting, you aren't shouting over the voices of people calling out to us, whether that person is a popular person or someone you never gave a thought to.
Now, i need some sleep.
Just write the damn thing!
