I wrote this for NaNoWriMo and decided to post it here. Please tell me anything you find wrong with it so I can edit and fix. :D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s 7:30 P.M., which means that all of the “adult” members are in the main room discussing which child would join the “adults” next. I hated these meetings so much, not because I was with them, but because I might be the next “child” to join them. Living in a cult with you parents, is not a pleasant thing. My whole life has been spent inside this house. I’ve never seen outside these walls, never been to school, and my friends are all into joining the cult and becoming the newest “adults”. Hate is all I could feel for this cult and its devoted members. Yes, that means I hate my parents and trust me its not fun living in a place where you hate everyone and everything.
Stress fills my very being as the voices rise in the main room. They were all arguing over the next “child”. God, please hear me and do not let me be the next child. I don’t want to be one of them; I want to be me. A loud slam rang throughout the house causing me to fall off my bed in shock. I landed on the floor next to my mother’s bed. In the cult, all families share a room. My father’s bed was the largest, since he was the man in the family. My mother and I had small beds, barely big enough for us. In this cult, men ruled and women were merely there as trophies. Each man wanted the most beautiful girl in the cult to marry him.
The door to my families “house” is burst opened and my father comes in with a furious look on his face, my mother slowly follows behind not saying a word.
“How dare they say that Evelyn is not devoted enough!” Father screamed. I guess I didn’t get in. “Evelyn you love this as much as your mother and I do, correct?”
No father I hate it! I want a life!
“Evelyn answer me!” At this point I knew I had to do what I always did when he asked me if I loved the cult.
“Yes, Father I love it!” I said with the fakest of smiles.
How on Earth did my parents not see through the facade I put on everyday for them? A blind man could tell I hated this and wanted freedom. A life where I chose what I did, when I did it, not have a schedule for every single second of my life. My comment made my father smile.
“Evelyn I promise you will become an adult in this family soon.” With that he fell on his bed with happy content look about his face.
I relaxed onto my bed and pondered how I was going to get out of this cult. Then it came to me, slowly throughout the night. I did not sleep, not one wink; I stayed up plotting and planning my escape. Not my permanent escape, I had nothing right now, that would be foolish to even attempt a full escape now. I would leave every night, and work at a place, any place, so long the pay was good. Then once I had enough money, I would leave, for good and never look back! It was prefect even though there were many flaws. One is how would I sneak out every night, when I share a room with my parents? That would be one of my hardest tasks to overcome.
Living in a cult with your parents, is not a pleasant thing.
Yes, that means I hate my parents, and trust me its not fun living in a place where you hate everyone and everything.
Stress fills my very being as the voices rise in the main room. They were all arguing over the next “child”. God, please hear me and do not let me be the next child. I don’t want to be one of them; I want to be me.
Two separate paragraphs!
A loud slam rang throughout the house, causing me to fall off my bed in shock. I landed on the floor next to my mother’s bed. In the cult, all families share a room. My father’s bed was the largest, since he was the man in the family. My mother and I had small beds, barely big enough for us. In this cult, men ruled and women were merely there as trophies. Each man wanted the most beautiful girl in the cult to marry him.
The door to my families “house” is burst opened, and my father comes in with a furious look on his face; my mother slowly followed behind, not saying a word.
No father, I hate it! I want a life!
“Evelyn, answer me!” At this point I knew I had to do what I always did when he asked me if I loved the cult.
“Yes, Father I love it!” I said with the fakest of smiles. Put that comma after "Father" rather than "Yes."
Fakest isn't a word.
“Evelyn, I promise you will become an adult in this family soon,” With that he fell on his bed with a happy content look about his face. Omit one of those adjectives.
Not my permanent escape, I had nothing right now, andthat would be foolish to even attempt a full escape now. I would leave every night, and work at a place, any place, so long the pay was good. Then once I had enough money, I would leave, for good and never look back!
It was prefect even though there were many flaws.
Don't contradict yourself in first person. It sounds strange.
One is how would I sneak out every night, when I share a room with my parents? That would be one of my hardest tasks to overcome.
This line just sounds stupid. I would recommend rewriting the last sentence for a better dramatic effect. This doesn't leave me wanting more.
Since this was really short, I'm just going to give you my impression of each thing in sort of a sloppy... thing. First off, explain what these "adults" and "children" do. Don't leave us in the dark, because in the dark people become disinterested. Secondly, you have to be more realistic when you talk about these cults. Evelyn's plan, if this were real life, wouldn't work at all. Unless she carved some sort of trap door under her bed, dug a tunnel to the outside street and managed to be incredibly quiet, it wouldn't really work. And if she uses a window she's bound to be caught.
The dialogue is not realistic at all. Firstly, you don't say, "You'll become an adult in this family soon" and fall onto a bed with a content look on your face. Nobody falls onto their bed with that face unless they've just eaten a meal or scored with a chick. And this is first person, therefore you should be able to add more of Evelyns thoughts into the story so we know what she thinks of everything going on around her, including people's actions and what they say. A lot of people don't understand the advantage they have when they write in first person limited: you're aloud to tell us everything that person is thinking, what they've thought, and incredibly detailed observations. Take advantage!
Explain things! Explain, explain, explain. With this you don't have to be in any specific person - just tell us what the hell you mean when you say "adult," "child," "cult" and so on. What is her definition of a cult? And what has her past life been like if she hasn't traveled outside the walls of her house? Us readers have never experienced such a thing, so how do you expect us to know?
I hope you take my suggestions into consideration. Toodles!
"Living in a cult with you parents, is not a pleasant thing. "
It should be your instead of you but I'm thinking that was accidental. And there shouldn't be any commas.
"Stress fills my very being as the voices rise in the main room. "
Being sounds a bit wrong here, maybe you could try using soul instead.
"My father’s bed was the largest, since he was the man in the family."
Man of the family not in.
"The door to my families “house” is burst opened and my father comes in with a furious look on his face, my mother slowly follows behind not saying a word. "
I assume that the families you're refering to is your family meaning your mother, father and yourself. That means it should be family's . The door "burst open" not opened because you already used past tense behind open so open should be as its root word. One more error, you used past tense for the whole story so that should be followed instead of follows.
"I said with the fakest of smiles."
Try, I faked a smile as I muttered. I dont think fakest is a word.
"I did not sleep, not one wink; I stayed up plotting and planning my escape."
Use either plotting or planning. They both mean the same thing.
"Not my permanent escape, I had nothing right now, that would be foolish to even attempt a full escape now. "
Remove the second comma and add "and" in its place.
"I would leave every night, and work at a place, any place, so long the pay was good. "
It should be "so long as".
"One is how would I sneak out every night, when I share a room with my parents? That would be one of my hardest tasks to overcome."
You should change the whole of that part. Like Sara said, rewrite it.
So I think this is a change from what I usually read. You need to write more about what the cult is about, why they use "adult" and children" and stuff like that because you can't leave it all up to our imagination. We have never been in a situation like that so we won't know. So yes, add in more details to your story. There's alot more that can be changed but Sara's said it all. You need to elaborate more. We don't know what's going on in your head so you have to bear that in mind.
It's an interesting storyline, and it can be even better. You just need to add in more details. I hope you found me helpful!
Hello dear! To start off with, welcome to YWS! You can call me Stella, or any variation thereof that you feel comfortable with, and I will be your reviewer today...
So did you finish your NaNoWriMo? I didn't have the energy to even begin! But good for you if you did.
I. NITPICKS
its not fun living in a place where you hate everyone and everything.
it's, not its
The door to my families “house” is burst opened
family's "house" bursts open
It was prefect even though there were many flaws.
perfect, not prefect.
Okay...
II. TENSE
Be careful. You slip with your tenses from present to past and back again. Choose one or the other and go through your piece to make sure you have consistency.
III. VOICE
Now, seems to me that considering the subject matter you're dealing with, the blunt voice works well. Again, consistency is the main issue here. Make sure that Evelyn's voice doesn't change too much and that she remains to appear the same, or else changes gradually. Perhaps it'd be cool at the beginning of your story if you kept her dealing in cold, hard facts, then let her emotions break through as time goes on.
IV. BE REASONABLE, SYBIL!
I realise your name isn't Sybil. But oh well.
Consider this for a moment: she's lived this way all her life. How does she know that other people live differently? How does she know she wants their life?
Cause and effect, my dear. Cause and effect. You have effect here, but only half the cause. Perhaps she finds things from outside, or meets somebody?
V. OVERALL
Not bad, not bad at all. You've certainly got an interesting idea.
Hope I helped, and that you stick around on YWS. PM me if you have any questions!
